Resurfacing DermaSculpt Offers Er:YAG Trifecta. Proponents of Er:YAGresurfacing now have the option of utilizing the 2940nmwavelength in three different ways. The new DermaSculptfrom HOYA ConBio (conbio.com) provides a fractionated mode(Sculpturization), light to deep ablation (Polish Peel), andtargeted treatment of discrete lesions (Chisel Touch).Clinicians can use the three available settings for comprehen-sive treatment of a single patient or selectively apply individ-ual settings to address specific concerns in a given patient.

The fractionated Sculpturization mode allows for treatmentof fine lines and photodamage, using a scanning handpiece.Penetration depths of up to 180 microns into the dermis areavailable at the 15J/cm2 setting. Non-ablative, no-downtimeor light ablative treatment are possible. Multiple patternshapes are available to customize treatment.

The Polish Peel ablative setting permits light-to-deep abla-tion, including treatment of deeper rhytides and

scars (including acne scars). Handpieces areavailable in 3, 5, and 8mm.

Finally, the Chisel Touch setting utilizes 400and 600 micron tips for treatment of smallanatomic sites, such as crevices and sides ofthe nose. It is also ideally suited for treat-ment of discrete lesions, such as seborrheickeratoses (SKs).

In a single patient, a PolishPeel could beused to improve tone, texture, and pigment, while Sculpturization could be applied forcollagen remodeling and overall skinsmoothing and tightening.

DermaSculpt can be used in darker skintypes, including types IV and V. Modalitiescan be obtained all at once or customized.

Fractional and Ablative Fusion for Pearl. Relatively new tothe market from Cutera (cutera.com) is the Pearl Fusion, the latest Fractional and Ablative Solution from the CuteraAesthetic Solutions family of devices. The Pearl Fusioncombines the benefits of Pearl ablative resurfacing with

those of Pearl Fractional into a single therapy. Pearl, PearlFractional, and Pearl Fusion feature Cutera’s exclusive YSGG2790nm wavelength. Pearl ablative resurfacing is a minimaldown-time (three to four days, no weeping and oozing)procedure performed with only topical anesthetic for thetreatment of fine lines/wrinkles, dyschromia, andimprovement of tone and texture. Pearl Fractional offersdeep fractional ablation (more than 1mm) for treatment ofsignificant dermal damage and photoaging, also with mini-mal downtime. The novel Pearl Fusion, indicated for wrin-kles, fine lines, dyschromia, pore size, skin tone and tex-ture, offers full ablation plus deep frac-tional energy deposition, while maintain-ing minimal downtime. Cutera says treat-ment can be delivered rapidly. The com-bined therapy provides the benefits ofeach individual laser in one treatmentsession.

532nm with nano-second pulse widths (PhotoAcoustic Therapyor PhotoAcoustic Technology Pulse (PTP)). PTP delivers highpeak power with short pulse durations. The nanosecond pulseconfiguration is intended to deliver a photoacoustic and subtlephotothermal effect.

Intended for skin rejuvenation, wrinkle/scar reduction, andbasic red and black tattoo removal, the MedLite C5 is offeredas an affordable entrée into the MedLite C platform. The C5system can be upgraded to the C6, which adds 585 and 650nmwavelengths via the Multi-Lite dye handpieces.

Reaction Introduces Multi-Channel RF. For radiofrequencyskin tightening and body contouring, the multi-frequencyReaction from Viora (vioramed.com) permits 144 differenttreatment settings. Three frequency channels are available forvarious depths of penetration, and a fourth multi-modeoption delivers all three frequencies. Reaction features

Channeled OptimalRF Energy or CORETechnology thatenables the multi-channel approach. Each frequency(2.4Hz, 1.8Hz,0.8Hz) provides adifferent depth ofpenetration, tar-geting of the der-mis, subcutaneouslayer, and hypoder-mis. Multi-RF tar-gets all threedepths. Treatmentcan be customizedfor skin tightening, lipolysis, or cel-lulite treatment andcircumferential

reduction. Theinclusion of vacuum

therapy facilitates deeper energy penetration and, accordingto Viora, it can “increase local blood circulation, promotelymphatic drainage and induce lipolysis.”

Treatments can be applied to the face, arms, belly, but-tocks, hips and thighs, and legs and range from about 20 to30 minutes, depending on the treatment site. There is nodowntime and no significant discomfort associated withtreatment.

Reaction joins Viora’s other product offerings, includingthe Trios IPL for long-term hair reduction, removal of vascu-lar and pigmented lesions, photodamage (age spots, finelines/wrinkles), and acne. The system provides a large spotsize (7.5cm2) with fast repetition rates to support rapidtreatments.

Thulium Laser a Market First. The1927nm Thulium laser is new tothe aesthetics market and isfeatured in the Fraxel re:storeDual system from Solta(soltamedical.com; fraxel.com).The Thulium fiber laser targetsunwanted pigmentation, whilethe 1550nm Erbium fiber laserallows non-ablative skin resur-facing. According to Solta, the1927nm Thulium laser is associ-ated with greater patient com-fort, allowing treatment of largeareas. Focal cooling is also builtinto the handpiece. A new scan-ner design is intended toincrease procedure speed by 25percent.

Early data suggest the bene-fit of the Fraxel re:store Duallaser to treat actinic keratoses(AKs) on the face or other pho-todamaged areas of the body.Initial results from an ongoing

clinical study found that treatment with the new Fraxelre:store DUAL laser resolved 86 percent of AK lesions whileimproving skin texture and pigmentation.

Thermage Introduces CPT. The new Thermage CPT system fea-turing Comfort Pulse Technology from Solta Medical offersimprovements over older Thermage systems(thermage.com). Thermage delivers pulsed radiofrequencyenergy for skin tightening and contouring. According toSolta, CPT features a new energy delivery algorithm that isdesigned to mimic Transcutaneous Electrical NerveStimulation or TENS therapy, which is commonly used tomanage chronic pain conditions by interfering with thebrain’s neural response mechanisms. The new algorithminterweaves pulsed radiofrequency delivery with coolingbursts. Additionally, a vibrating handpiece offers anotherapproach to pain control. Solta notes that controlled, split-faced clinical studies involving over 40 patients found thattreatment with vibration was preferred to treatment withoutvibration.

Additional features of the new system include aredesigned Face Tip 3.0 and seamless integration with theThermage Body Tip 16.0 for faster, more comfortable faceand body treatments.

Lux2940 Gets in the Groove. Now available from Palomar(palomarmedical.com) is the Groove Optic for the Lux2940fractional handpiece that creates a unique, grooved injurypattern on skin to increase ablative tissue coverage whilemaintaining the benefits traditionally associated with frac-tional approaches.

Other fractional ablative devices remove vertical columnsof tissue, however, the Groove Optic ablates lines of tissue.According to Palomar, this results in a uniform, high-cover-age pattern that “more effectively disrupts the structuralmemory of wrinkles.”

Hair RemovalSciton Rolls Out ClearScan. More comfortable, speedy hairremoval may be possible with the new 755nm AlexandriteClearScan ALX from Sciton (sciton.com). TheClearScan ALX uses a high-speed scannerand Large Area Pattern Generator (LAPG)technology for non-sequential energydelivery that is intended to provide pre-cise, uniform coverage. Continuouscontact cooling adds to the comfortof treatment. The scanningalexandrite technology isdesigned for rapid treatment.

The ClearScan ALX can also beused to treat vascular lesions, benign pigmented lesions andwrinkles, and the wavelength issuitable for use in all skin types.

Single spot settings are alsopossible. The system has no consumables, and treatment hasno downtime.

StriaeFirst Clearance for Striae Granted. The first device cleared byFDA for treatment of striae is the Lux1540 Fractional non-ablative laser handpiece from Palomar Medical Technologies,Inc. The StarLux laser and IPL platform permits a range of

Research and Industry NewsIridex ‘s 532nm long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser (Gemini,iridex.com) offers greater efficacy and lower risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation compared to other systemsin the management of freckles and lentigines in darker skintones. That’s according to a recent comparison of the efficacyof four lasers (595nm long pulsed dye (LPDL), 755nm LPAlexandrite , 532nm QS Nd:YAG, and 532nm LP Nd:YAG) inthe treatment of 40 (randomized 10 per laser) Chinesepatients with Fitzpatrick skin types III and IV that was pre-sented at the American Society for Laser Medicine andSurgery last month (Abstract No. 136). Subjects received oneto four sessions provided four to six weeks apart and wereassessed after three to 12 months. In the Gemini group, 70percent of subjects had optimum improvement after six to 12months, compared to 50 percent of LPDL patients after threemonths and 60 percent of QS Nd:YAG patients after three to12 months. Alexandrite laser therapy did not provide statisti-cally significant improvement. There was no risk for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in the LP Nd:YAG group, compared to 38 percent risk with Alexandrite, 33 percent riskwith QS Nd:YAG, and six percent risk with LPDL.

Solta Medical, Inc. entered into a definitive agreement toacquire privately-held Aesthera Corporation for $5.25 millionin Solta common stock and cash, with potential additionalbaseline milestones of $750,000 for a consideration of $6.0million.
