The places where we work are also where we live.

That’s why Teck employees are focused on making the right choices for the environment, for our local communities and for future generations.

Teck’s five steelmaking coal operations in the Elk Valley employ more than 4,000 men and women. In 2012, we spent $890 million on local goods and services and invested $1.7 million to support local community groups.

Teck invested in the Elkford Community and Conference Centre and Sparwood Seniors’ Drop-in Centre and is proud to give ongoing support to local charities and community groups.

For the water lover, Elkford offers many options. Whether you’re seeking seclusion and majestic sights at the Elk Lakes, a quick hike to Josephine Falls or fishing on the edge of breathtaking rivers you will find water that is sure to bring you everything you had hoped for.

• The Elk LakesThe Elk Lakes Provincial Park is located 69 km north of Elkford. Surrounded by a breathtaking backdrop of sky high mountains, glaciers, waterfalls and cliffs sit the Elk Lakes. The Elk Lakes present

not only an abundance of summer fishing opportunities, but during the winter, ice fishing becomes a treasured hobby of locals and visitors alike. Many campsites and trails are available for those that enjoy sitting back, relaxing and enjoying the scenery. • Josephine FallsA brief hike off of the road leading to Fording is Josephine Falls. The falls are spectacular, dropping 25 m down a rugged canyon carved out by the Fording River. • The Elk River & The Fording River The Elk and Fording River both located north of Elkford are a fisherman’s haven. With as many spots known, there are more unknown. Fishers can wade or walk

down the edges of the river to get lost in a day of some of Canada’s best fishing. • Lost Lake & Lily LakeAfter the trail from Josephine Falls, you will find Lily Lake and Lost Lake. The trails to these lakes are

recommended for the more experienced hikers/riders but with their raw beauty and remote locations wetland birds, big game and untouched nature are sure to be seen.

The Best Place To Celebrate Winter

For many, winter in the Elk Valley seems to drag on. The snow drifts creep higher and higher by the day and sometimes the sun seems to be hidden away. In Elkford, this season is different. Winter is a time for fun, laughter, and celebrations. Winter in the Wild, Dog Sled Races, Wapiti Ski Hill party and events, an outdoor rink, great toboggan hills, Moonlight Madness Craft Sale and much more bring winter to life.

2The Infamous White Bear

The white bears of Elkford have been the highlight of many news stories over the past year. They grew up in Elkford as curious cubs and have since been relocated after becoming a public safety risk by lacking fear of humans and consistently dining on garbage. Since relocation last year one of the bears has wandered her way back into the community. She has now been relocated to the Calgary Zoo to prevent her euthanization and to allow others to marvel in her beauty. Despite their trouble making, Elkford’s white bears have captured the attention of all.

Expansive Trails

Elkford’s trails system spans hundreds of kilometers and offer unlimited opportunities for outdoor recreation. Whether you enjoy hiking, biking, snowmobiling or skiing these trail systems provide the chance for many to experience the back country on these beautiful trails and paths.

Strong Community Clubs

Elkford has many successful and strong community clubs. These groups, ran by many dedicated community volunteers breath life and energy into the community. Whether it be the figure skating club, snowmobiling association or quilters guild residents have many avenues to explore all types of hobbies and interests.

The Elkford Community Conference Center

One of a kind architecture and state of the art construction makes this building widely recognized and admired, but it is so much more to the community of Elkford. This building has been bringing community residents together since its completion in 2012. With a visitor center, playschool, commercial kitchen and huge banquet hall the Community Conference Center is equipped for all types of functions and events.

NATURE OUT EVERY DOOR Outside every door in Elkford spills nature. From wildlife to wildflowers expansive back country is what this community is known for. Elkford is an outdoor enthusiasts haven. Whether you like the calm, down to earth vibe of the community, or seek the adrenaline rushing thrill of back country sports Elkford has it all.

A COAL BOOM CREATES ELKFORDElkford is a young community in comparison to many, but nonetheless Elkford is rich in history and was created by the hands of hundreds of volunteers. Along with the backing of Fording mine and the boom in coal mining in the area Elkford was established to house mine employees and grew to become an established community of thousands. Many residents have lived in Elkford since the beginning and recall the early days of taking a dusty dirt road to get there. Development in Elkford was rapid and it was dubbed as "B.C.'s fastest growing community." Today Elkford is thriving and many projects and developments are always underway.

RECREATION, RECREATION, RECREATIONDespite the small population, Elkford offers recreation opportunities that surpass what most bigger communities offer. With a fantastic Aquatic Center boasting 4 lanes for swimming, diving board, slide, sauna, whirlpool and more to it's fabulous arenas, curling area and outdoor skating rink, no matter the season or person there is something for everyone to enjoy. Outside the Recreation Complex horseshoe pits, ball diamonds, tennis courts, sports fields, a running track and play grounds can also be found.

ENDLESS EVENTS Elkford plays host to a large amount of events and activities throughout the year, ensuring residents and visitors always have outlets to build community spirit, make friends and have fun. Beginning in the Winter months Elkford hosts annual Sled Dog Derby, Winter in the Wild and Wapiti Family Fun Day, in the Spring an annual Ice Skating Carnival and Art Auction attract the crowds. Summer is filled with fun during Canada Days, Wildcat Days, Grass Smash, Elkford Triathlon and more. Just when you think things would calm down for fall, the Annual Wapiti Ski Club Party mixes a bit of work getting the hill ready for winter, along with good old fashioned Elkford fun!

We’ve gotgood news.

(Celebrating 115 years of serving the Elk Valley.)From the day we printed our very rst paper — back in 1898, e Free Press has reported on events, stories and legends of the Elk Valley for over 115 years.

We are one of the oldest newspapers in Canada.

We have followed stories from the spectacular to the every day, we’ve printed it all, each week: our politicians’ plans, the public’s questions, main street businesses on their way up and local careers on their way down, the hottest days of summer and deepest snows of winter. We’ve followed crimes and punishments, performances and players, our hometown teams’ victories, overseas wars, Canadian news, and B.C. views. We’ve celebrated community underdogs who’ve won and mourned lost loved ones.

After more than a century we’re still doing our very best to be the Elk Valley’s newspaper.

Elkford's Mountain Meadows Golf Course is well known for

fabulous golf, picturesque views, and the lowest rates in the region. The course will provide new and experienced golfers the game they have been waiting for, while offering an exceptional atmosphere being in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. The nine hole course was constructed on an elk grazing meadow in 1976 and has been a popular place for residents and visitors to spend the day in the sunshine.

Mountain Meadows Golf Course is home to two of the toughest par 3's in the Kootenays - the 184 yard 5th and the 195 yard 12th hole. Both holes demand accurate tees shots

to heavily guarded greens. Water is found on six of the nine holes and the first nine play much different from the back nine, so there are a very different 18 holes to be played which ensures a challenging and entertaining round.

C&F Restaurant in the Clubhouse offers a daily smorg lunch and a Chinese and Western Menu. If it's relaxation and a cold one you are looking for stop by the Clubhouse Lounge and take in the views on the newly renovated deck.

Need some new golfing supplies? The Pro Shop offers all kinds of gear and gifts and there are always rentals available.
