Duterte May Hand Reins to Only Son of Philippine Dictator Ferdinand Marcos

    By Andreo Calonzo

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte could resign to make way for the son of ousted dictator Ferdi-nand Marcos if a legal challenge to the 2016 vice presidential election is upheld.

Duterte, 73, who has of-ten raised the possibility of step-ping down, thinks Ferdinand Mar-cos Jr. “is one of the better qualified leaders to succeed him,” presiden-tial spokesman Harry Roque said at a briefing Thursday.

If Marcos “becomes vice president, perhaps the President will make true his word that he will step down,” Roque said.

Marcos won 14.1 million votes in the 2016 vice presidential race, an election that is conducted separate-ly from the presidency in the Phil-ippines, narrowly losing to Liberal Party candidate Leni Robredo. Mar-cos claims the vote was tainted by massive cheating.

Duterte has said before that he might turn over the presidency to Marcos, whose sister he credits with supporting his presidential campaign. The triggers, he said,

would include a failure to deliver on his promises to crack down on narcotics, crime and corruption.

Marcos however said Duterte should stay on as president. “I urge him not to leave the presidency, as our people still need him for the betterment of our lives and our country,” the Philippine Star quot-ed the former senator as saying on

    Friday.

    Father’s Footsteps

Marcos, 60, told Bloomberg News last October that he was interested in following in his father’s foot-steps. “That’s what you want to be,” Marcos said. “Every private in the army wants to be a general. Every janitor wants to be a CEO.”

A former congressman, senator and governor of the northern province of Ilocos Norte, Marcos is one of the most divisive political figures in the Philippines, where roughly 3,000 people died and thousands more were tortured when his father sus-pended elections and declared martial law in the 1970s.

His appeal against the result is cur-rently before the Supreme Court, sitting as the electoral tribunal, which has ordered a manual re-count of the votes. A decision could still be years away. A previous chal-lenge to to the 2010 vice-presidential election took almost six years to resolve.

“There’s really no way of knowing how long the case will last,” Dante Gatmaytan, a constitutional law professor at the University of the Philippines, said in a text message.

Gatmaytan said the removal in May of Supreme Court Chief Justice Ma-ria Lourdes Sereno, an outspoken critic of Duterte’s administration, was unlikely to affect the outcome of the challenge to the vice presi-dential election result.

“I understand why there might be some apprehen-sion because the Supreme Court has never ruled against the president,” Gatmaytan said. “But the tribunal is not only made up of members of the Su-preme Court.”

Duterte has repeatedly questioned Robredo’s suit-ability for the job. Robredo -- the leader of the opposi-tion -- has said that she

doesn’t want to dignify Duterte’s attacks against her, and instead urged the president to focus on the economy.

Her camp was quick to downplay the chances of another Marcos as presi-dent. “President Duterte’s resignation will never hap-pen because Mr. Marcos will never win his electoral protest,” the vice presi-dent’s lawyer, Romulo Macalintal, said in a state-ment.

    Remember the 70’s Manila Sound?

Who can forget Stargazer at Silahis, Lost Horizon at Philippine Plaza, Altitude at Hyatt, The Jungle Bar at Manila Hotel, Coco Banana, and the mother of all Manila discos, Where Else?

It was the glorious decade when “OPM” or Original Pilipino Music enjoyed unprecendented success in the local music industry. It was when the Filipino recording artists outsold their foreign counterparts and dominated the charts. The latter part of the 70’s saw the birth of a new kind of OPM sound which was Bee Gees’ Saturday Night Fever-inspired. At the forefront of these OPM dance genres were the VST & Company, Wadab, Labuyo and Hotdog, among others.

After more than three decades and with the resurgence of revival music, some of the origi-nal band members decided to regroup and formed the 70’s Superband to bring you back the timeless OPM classics of the 70’s.

Get ready to romance the 70’s again when OPM reigned supreme!

Relive and reminisce those memories and fall in love once again!

Journey back to OPM’s golden years with The 70’s Superband!

Sing and dance to their biggest hits: Awitin Mo, Isasayaw Ko, Rock Baby Rock, Swing, Dis-co Fever, Magnifica, Step No, Step Yes, Ikaw Ang Aking Mahal, Ipagpatawad Mo, Pag Tumatagal, Lalong Tumitibay, Jeepney, Tsismis Ka, Parang Ulap, Sumayaw Sumunod, Dahil Mahal Kita, Bato Sa Buhangin, T.L. Ako Sa Iyo, Ikaw Ang Superstar Ng Buhay Ko, Annie Batungbakal and many more…

The members of The 70’s Superband are:

Nonoy Tan of WADAB * Rey Magtoto of WADAB * Monet Gaskell of VST & COMPANY * Mon Espia of LABUYO *

Tito Cayamanda (Composer & Arranger) * Tek Faustino (Gary V’s drummer)

The spiritual journey of AN-TERO “Tenny” SORIANO III (January 9, 1946 to July 22, 2018).began on Sunday, July 29, after his family and friends bade his physical body a final farewell.

Myrna, Tenny's wife, and the family express their grati-tude to all who visited and viewed Tenny’s temporal remains, offered prayers and condolences, offered

flowers, and shared precious time with them during their hour of bereavement and grief. You have eased the burden of their great loss.

THANK YOU too for cele-brating Tenny's life.

Tenny was 72. He is survived by wife Myrna, daughter Anagaile and spouse Rico delas Alas, son Aris and spouse Czarina, and son Ale-

kos; sister Shoda and spouse Jesse dela Cruz, brother Gus-tavo and spouse Nila, broth-er Ike and spouse Blanche, and sister in-law Thelma, wife of brother Ed who passed last year; and his relatives.

May the Lord grant Tenny eternal peace, and let per-petual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.

    IN HIS LIFE (TYPICALLY TENNY)

Antero “Tenny” Soriano III had all of 72 years to come full circle, from January 9, 1946 to July 22, 2018.

In his life, Tenny rubbed elbows with us and en-gaged us in firm hand-shakes and brotherly hugs. He persuasively spoke and attentively listened to us. He feasted and drank and played music and sang and danced with us.

In his life, Tenny always brought out his best side. When his sons went about Tenny’s memorabilia, they found a note Tenny wrote, on top of his working desk. It read: Pag may lumapit sa iyo at humingi ng tulong, huwag kang hihindi, Dapat pagbigyan mo sa kahit anong paraan.

In his life, Tenny had help-ing hands, shoulders to lean and cry on, and a cheerful countenance that we could count on during stormy times.

In his life, Tenny always accommodated, appreciat-ed and cherished time we spent with him, whether these moments came regu-larly, occasionally or spar-ingly. His was a sincere de-sire to be with us, even for a fleeting moment. He knew the value of good company.

In his life, Tenny was our childhood buddy, class-mate, musical band mate, co-worker, colleague in the media profession, leader, community-oriented per-son and family man.

In his life, Tenny opened himself up to be the person

we befriended, loved and etched in lasting memory.

In his life, Tenny has indeed risen to every occasion.

Undoubtedly, Tenny is still with us, hovering above and watching over us.

Definitely, Tenny’s legacy is in us – in our minds and in our hearts.

Certainly, we will all pre-serve his memory.

From us to you, Tenny: Fare thee well on your spiritual

journey. Until we meet again, Friend. (By Butch Galicia)

Pope Francis entrusts those who are suffering to the Virgin Mary

    By Hannah Brockhaus

On the Feast of the As-sumption of Mary into Heaven, Pope Francis en-trusted any person who is suffering, in mind or body, to the care of the Mother of God. Invoking “Mary, Consoler of the afflicted,” the pope entrusted to her “the an-guish and torment of those who, in so many parts of the world, suffer in body and spirit.” “Receive our heavenly Mother for all comfort, courage and serenity,” he

said Aug. 15. Speaking after the recita-tion of the Angelus for the feast day, he said he was thinking, in particular, of the victims of a bridge col-lapse in Genoa, Italy, Tues-day, and led those present in praying a ‘Hail Mary’ to-gether. As of Wednesday after-noon, at least 16 people were injured and 39 con-firmed dead, with more missing, after a bridge making up a part of one of Italy’s major highways col-lapsed in a storm Aug. 14.

According to CNN, Italy’s Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced Aug. 14 that “structural failure” is the working theory for the cause of the collapse. “While I entrust the people who have lost their lives to the mercy of God, I express my spiritual closeness to their families, the wound-ed, the displaced and all those who suffer because of this tragic event,” the pope said. Before the Angelus, Francis reflected on Mary’s life, noting that she lived even

ordinary activities in unity with her son, Jesus Christ. “The life of the Madonna took place like that of a common woman of her time: she prayed, ran the family and the house, at-tended synagogue... But every daily action was car-ried out by her always in total union with Jesus,” he said. He said her union with Je-sus reached its pinnacle on Calvary: “in love, in com-passion, and in the suffer-ing of the heart” and for this reason, “God has given her a full participation also in the resurrection of Je-sus.” “Today the Church invites us to contemplate this mys-tery: it shows us that God wants to save the whole man, soul and body,” he said. Quoting St. Irenaeus, who said, “the glory of God is the living man, and the life of man is the vision of God,”

Francis noted that, one day, at the resurrection of the dead, the bodies of those who have died will be reu-nited with their souls, as was Mary’s. “If we have lived this way, in the joyous service of God, which is expressed also in generous service to [our] brothers, our destiny, on the day of the resurrec-tion, will be similar to that of our heavenly Mother,” he said. The “resurrection of the flesh,” as it is sometimes called, which will happen at Christ’s second coming, is

“a cornerstone of our faith,” Francis explained. “The wonderful reality of the Assumption of Mary manifests and confirms the unity of the human person and reminds us that we are called to serve and glorify God with all our being, soul and body,” he said. (EWTN News/CNA)
