FOCUS6
The compressors (ATEX directive)
Euroklimat uses several types of compressors to meet the different needs of use: the classic
“scroll” to the innovative “semi-hermetic screw.
But the emphasis on industrial applications and production process leads Euroklimat to
take often compressors “semi-hermetic alternatives” that are still today one of the most
popular and reliable components. The request of use The natural refrigerants such as pro-
pane, also, allows the construction of this type of compressors with a specific component
maker and a dedicated study to the R290 use. The based concept is simple: a cylinder,
inside which a piston works, allows the suction of the refrigerant gas and the subsequent
compression. Two plates valves installed on respective chambers of recovery and dischar-
ge, supervise the functioning of the system ensuring the flow of refrigerant in the circuit. The
lubrication system, finally, achieved through a forced circulation of specific oil provides an
adequate guarantee of functionality over time.
The oil level is constantly monitored by the operator through a glass clearly visible outside
of the compressor. Great advantage of these compressors is the total internal accessibility
which promotes restoration on site. The heads, the electric motor and all components are
completely removed.
The practicality, together with the great knowledge that operators have of this device, ena-
ble it to intervene without having to unplug the compressor from, saving time and transfers
often costly and complex.
The control of cooling capacity, using a special “valve solenoid” on the head of the com-
pressor, reduces the potential provided by following a precise request of the load.
More specifically, and referring to the operation with R290 is necessary to emphasize that
hydrocarbons (propane category to which it belongs) have no corrosive effect on copper
components and therefore can be safely used semi-hermetic reciprocating compressors
with electric motor inside. However, there are a special construction particulars, which can
be summarized as follows: mechanical optimized for the use of hydrocarbons; special oil
charge; equipotential bonding of all electrical components; electrical box for ATEX applica-
tions; solenoid valve, oil differential pressure switch and PTC sensor ATEX certified, ATEX
compliant crankcase oil heater.

The electronic controls
One of the strengths and quality of equipment is the accuracy and deepening management
of electronic controls.
The new microprocessor-based systems achieve levels of detail is absolutely incredible and
the evolution of these systems offered the possibility to control not only the parameters of
use but, more importantly, all functions and safety equipment stores.
The electronics are basically divided into two basic parts: support for “hardware” and a
program software.
The hardware is made by the printed circuit boards where physically come all the signals
from sensors placed along the circuit and where it triggers all the commands on, off, auto,
block and counter.
These signals can be either on-off as in the case of on / off a compressor, or as variables in
proportion to the opening of a valve or a change in fan speed during a condensation control.
In the software section, which consists of a computer program physically imprinted on a
chip and placed on the Hardware tab, are written all the functions that the device must per-
form after receiving a signal, however, before sending any commands to the components
of machine.
While in the past to create a purpose it was necessary to combine the action of some elec-
trical components, today is enough to write it to run.
This fact has made it possible to chain several actions, perhaps even for the same function,
and make much more sophisticated control or, even, as occurs in some cases carrying out
functions that previously were not possible.
LANs that arise through a simple electrical connection, allowing the dialogue more micro-
processors and, therefore, more machines with the obvious advantages plant.
Moreover, given the now widespread systems “BMS” for total control of buildings, we can
interface with the microprocessor of the machines these devices even if the design langua-
ge is different and, of course, just any producer.
If you can not talk directly, you can refer to a “communication protocol” international, through
which send their information to the outside.

The most delicate problem of every modern company is to be able to provide rapid, accu-
rate and complete informations.
The evolution of communications technology has led to significantly reduce the time avai-
lable to produce the answers and to make matters worse, the specialized technical/
production which has been gaining increasing, has allowed companies to expand product
capabilities and configurations.
This has dealt a blow to that part of business that must oversee the preparation and com-
munication of technical data or commercial products. Marketing efforts, documentation,
the same sales and even the general trend of the company often depend on the capacity
and speed to respond to market demand.
Until the last century it was unthinkable to imagine multiple assessments, while rich in
information, while immediate. You could certainly make an interesting document but at the
expense of the timeframe for implementation or at the expense of accuracy.
Fortunately, technology has also allowed in this area to find good solutions and helpful to
the operators.
Euroklimat has invested heavily in electronics because he always wanted to provide a
serious service to its customers and after several years of discussions, research and im-
provements may present with pride Euroklimat Software Selection.
In the vast range of products Euroklimat, this program is able to search, select and deliver
the equipment or appliances necessary to meet the demand. The options are many, the
flexibility is extreme. Machine-type silenced the use of heat recovery from the calculation
easier with the nominal conditions for the dimensioning more complicated to use specific
values, just a shot of clicks to get immediate answers analytical and articulate. Another
great advantage of this software is the possibility to directly compare multiple devices and
be able, therefore, without laborious manual assessment, to select the optimal product for
energy performance, or for any other reason.
At the conclusion of the selection, a large section devoted to print or export of documents
in traditional formats, allows the production of processed clear and very well planned.
The investment of Euroklimat is not limited to this aspect but is also developed through the
web with innovative and useful services for all employees and users.

The webservice
With the advent of information technology, there have been several opportunities for com-
munication and transmission of information unthinkable until last century. Moreover the de-
velopments of recent years moreover brought a revolution to labor standards but also of life
to which we were accustomed.
We have, in fact, experienced the birth of a new “era”. Today getting information in real
time with continuous, accurate and complete updates is possible. The possibilities for error
are reduced to a minimum and really the quality delivered to you is awesome. Euroklimat
considered a must taking advantage of this huge potential creating a website very articulate
and detailed, providing an important support to all customers: here it is the “webservice”.
The simple and intuitive interface of the site allows you to “surf” quickly and easily reach
the pages or news of interest. A real direct link between customer and company, obtained
thanks to the interactivity of the platform, represents a major “plus” of this system, more
than ever necessary to forward the significant technological innovations or achievements.
“webservice” by Euroklimat is a versatile tool and at the same time rich and able to meet
more different needs: the simply curious internet surfer or the refrigeration technician can
find “on-line” clear answers and complete documents.
Within the various sections, it contains general information about the company, its history,
the correct contacts, pages dedicated to Euroklimat certifications, a few important installa-
tions. But the most interesting and detailed areas concern the access and the availability to
download documents. The sections named as “Download” and “Eurokey” respectively allow
you to save on your computer the catalogs and the unit selection software.
Last but not least, the area that has given his name to the whole site provides access to
detailed documentation of every single machine: dimensional drawing, schematic diagram,
spare part list, confirmation ‘order, instruction manuals… Arranged and designed for the
specific skills, “webservice” allows the customer or the service technician to access their
files and recover real time info which are then updated and available even when on the
installation site.
Another step to the Euroklimat “mission”: we help our customers succeed.

The natural refrigerant
NaturalRefrigerants
ArtificialRefrigerants
The “R 290” Global Warming Potential is one of the less value in refrigeration.
Speaking in a very general way, a refrigerant has the task of transferring optimally heat from a hot source to a colder. The transfer of this
energy can take place with an exchange of latent type (evaporation, condensation) or sensible (heating, cooling). In any case, it is very
important that the refrigerant used to maintain very high values of : density, enthalpy, heat capacity and stability.
Even within a compression refrigeration cycle the fluid used for the trasferiemnto energy is the “refrigerant” that can be of a natural type
(such as ammonia, carbon dioxide, propane, etc..) or artificial and in this case it is generically called “Freon”.
Clearly, studies and research specialists are aimed at identifying the best features of a refrigerant comparing them to the work required
in the context of use. From many years, in air conditioning / refrigeration, is also used Propane (R290) as a natural refrigerant. Propane
is a “aliphatic hydrocarbon” belonging to the series of “alkenes” and you get to fractional distillation from petroleum and natural gas.
In a historical moment in which lends itself particularly attention to everything that can have an impact on the environment that surrounds
us, evaluations and considerations that arise in the past did not exist. Rightly, we must be very careful not to create damage the natural
balance of our planet and this particular attention should be paid to the technological equipment that is constantly on the rise, are used.
Here, then and increasingly, deepening towards the use of natural products that may cause the least “uncomfortable” environment as
possible. The “Global Warming Potenzial” indicated in the table above, which expresses the contribution to the greenhouse effect (is
the Earth’s ability to retain its atmosphere in, the solar energy) given by an emission gas in the atmosphere, forcefully illustrates how the
propane is less “harmful” than all Freon. The good physical characteristics and also thermodynamic properties of this natural gas, in
addition, allow to realize interesting applications with great technical and energy results.
Euroklimat, wanted to develop a series of units that take advantage of these features and these properties.

Technical construction characteristic
HousingThe basement is made of galvanised steel painted with polyurethane powder and equipped with support feet for fixed installation. A fra-mework made in anodized aluminum, is fixed to the base. The frame profiles are specially joined together by corner joints in aluminum alloy which makes the construction firm even in difficult conditions such as the handling and transport. Upon completion of the structure are installed closing and service panels, made of galvanized steel and finely painted outside. The set, designed specifically for the application and optimized for operation and result of years of experience, facilitates maintenance operations allowing to operate in an internal parts also under running condition machine.
FansAxial fan directly coupled to the electric motor, 4 or 6 poles, external rotor type, with special labyrinth watertight, bearings free from servicing and incorporated thermal protection. Fans have blades with haul profile, dinamically and statically balanced and are equipped with accident prevention grill on air inlet. Aerodynamic housing and wing profile blades increase efficiency and decrease noise level.
CompressorRECIPROCATING semihermetic compressor, complete with forced lubricated system, oil electrical heater when unit on standby, isolation valve on gas inlet and outlet. Electrical motor is cooled by refrigerant gas in suction and is protected against working anomalies by integral electronic protection and thermistors embedded in windings. Compressors are fitted on antivibration mountings. For models from 251 to 1402 they are supplied with unloaded head, to adapt cooling capacity in case of reduction of thermal needs. The compressor is mechanically optimized for use with Hydrocarbons and built in according to Directive ATEX 94/9/CE for the safety requirements: Zone 2, Gas group IIB. Some components are ATEX certified.
Water heat exchangersThe water exchangers (evaporator; liquid sub-cooler) is brazed plate of stainless steel AISI 316 type. The large surface area of the plates, exactly the same on both the gas and the water side, providing a high thermal exchange and offers very high performance results. This type of exchanger has the great advantage of having extremely small dimensions thus allowing to reduce the space occupied by the machine and ensuring an interesting ease of maintenance. The control of the evaporator is thermostatic water side and it is managed entirely by the microprocessor system mounted on board. On the evaporator ther is also a water differential pressure switch to stop the unit in case of low water flow. The heat exchangers that work at low temperature (temperature which may cause condensation, free cooling heat exchanger and evaporator) are covered on the outside by a special closed cell insulation vapor barrier. The connections are placed directly on the heat exchanger and kept outside the unit in dedicated panel.
Air heat exchangerThe condensing heat exchanger is finned pack type and is designed with a wide front surface to obtain a high heat exchange with a low pres-sure drop both on the air side and the gas side. It’s made from copper pipes in staggered rows and mechanically expanded into aluminum fins.
Refrigerant CircuitThe refrigerant circuit is made entirely of copper tube, brazed with silver alloy, and is isolated on the suction part, to avoid the formation of condensation. It is designed to minimize the load losses so as to avoid capacity reductions and realized in a workmanlike. A special safety device ensures the opening of the circuit before reaching critical operating situations.Essentially consists of:- Filter molecular sieve, capable of retaining impurities of mechanical origin and dryer to protect and to eliminate the circuit from traces of moisture- Indicator liquid passage for the verification of the charge and of the moisture content of the gas, thanks to an indicator color change- Rotalock on the liquid line- Solenoid valve with shut-off function installed on the liquid line- Electronic expansion valve- Pressure transducers that transmit readings directly to the microprocessor by unit- High pressure switch with manual reset- Low pressure switch with automatic reset- Differential pressure switch for lubrification oil- Flexible pipings for pressure switches connection and pressure sensors- Refrigerant charge and non-freezing oil (excluding the amount relating to piping collegamente between unity and condensers)- Proportional signal 0-10V. for control of condensation- Pressure gauges with glycerine in order to avoid the oscillation of the rod reading and positioned both on the high and low pressure of the refrigerant circuit.- Some components are ATEX certified. The refrigerant circuit can be single or double, depending on the model and quantity of compressors installed (see detail in the technical data table). To ensure high-safety-level the unit is equipped with a special gas detector for flammable gases, including three alarm levels and

Possible configurations
“Integrated” VersionThe Base (B) solution, as interface to the plant, includes the water fittings of the evaporator only. However an external pumping system and a suitable buffer tank are necessary for properly circulating the fluid. One of the biggest advantages offered by this Integrated version (I), is represented by its own design characteristics of the equipment, which allows for ease of installation difficult to achieve with other solutions and interesting cost savings. Even the Base version, in fact, the machine offers a set of functions and activities very significant but all grouped in a solution, compact and packaged so as to avoid wastage of installation space and reduce operations on site only to electrical and hydraulic connections. The main sections/features of the Integrated version are:- the production of cold in a mechanical way - the tank to a large thermal storage- the circulation water systems to the user- the hydraulic tubes for the connection between all the componentsThe fact that you have everything already pre-assembled and pre-tested in the factory, operating by a single control system and be able to avoid doing work on site searching for the technical spaces, studying the paths, creating poses and adjust through testing often difficult, offers unparalleled reliability of the system than the already mentioned economical advantage.
A completion of the peculiarities of the machine, and also as already specified above, the refrigerant used is totally natural type which offers interesting advantages from the point of view of environmental impact beyond that, thanks to the specific sizing of the individual components, a safe saving energy.
DS EquipmentsIt consists of a plate heat exchanger fitted upstream the standard condenser. This exchanger, named as Desuperheater (DS), heats water and recovers free of charge, i.e. without worsening the unit operating conditions but on the contrary improving them, the heat of the hot refrigerant gas cooling it until it reaches the condensing temperature. The amount of the heat recovery depends very much on the general unit operating conditions; as an average, in normal situation, it corresponds to about 20% of the unit cooling capacity.
Available also the Version with FREE COOLING SystemThis type of equipment can also be realized with the free-cooling system that allows a large energy and cost savings when the outside air temperature turns out to be favorable. The cooling of the fluid, in fact, takes place without the use of the compressors. For the characteri-stics and for further details contact the sales Euroklimat office.
For the characteristics of the refrigerant used and for certain operational aspects related to the proper operation of the appliance, some components or parts of the circuit are ATEX certified.

Desuperheater
One of the available equipment for this series of units is a partial heat recovery identified with the initial “DS”. This is better defined as “DeSu-
perheater” since it allows to recover part of the condensation heat that normally is dissipated through the main condenser. Thanks to the “DS”
equipment it is possible to heat water for post-heating, domestic hot water or other purposes by an additional heat exchanger. This system is
very attractive since it provides the heat totally free of charge: it takes advantage of the desuperheating phase of the hot gas thus not modifying
the gas condensation phase and then keeping (even improving really) the unit operating conditions of the refrigerant circuit. Due to this feature,
the desuperheater has a capacity limit that can be roughly estimated at a maximum of about 20% of the total cooling capacity but this value is
highly variable depending on the type of equipment, the unit working conditions and the heat recovery working conditions as well. Really the
gas compressed to a very high temperature is flowing in the heat exchanger and this could allow the hot water to reach even 70-75 °C but in
this case the recovered capacity may not exceed 5% of the total condensing heat.
The construction layout is relatively simple as it appears from the figure: it consists in inserting a brazed plate heat exchanger (one for each
refrigerant circuit normally) in series and upstream of the main condenser. The water side controls and settings of the heat recovery are not
mounted on the unit but must be designed and carried out by the customer. However the refrigerant cycle is not affected when the desu-
perheater is not or only partially working because the heat not dissipated here is rejected directly and simply by the main condenser. Indeed,
using the desuperheater normally improves also the nominal operating conditions of the chiller as it is like to add more exchange surface to
the condenser.
Boiling water in case of total and prolonged lack of heat recovery is the unique issue to pay attention to. Depending on the control and settings
that the customer applies to the heat recovery water side, it may occur that, when stopping the circulation pump and / or intercepting the water
circuit towards the user system, the steady and limited in volume water reaches temperatures close to those of the hot gas which has just been
compressed and is directly in contact with the water through the desuperhater. As a consequence water might partially boil. This is definitely
to be prevented to avoid the operation of the safety devices that should be mounted on the user water circuit.

Vibration isolation mounting (kit)
Among the accessories of the water chillers of this series, the antivibration mountings are provided in order to isolate any vibrations transmitted
to the unit’s bearing frame when the appliance is operating. These dampers can be of two types: rubber or spring. The choice depends on
the isolation performances requested: greater for the spring type and lower for the rubber ones. Obviously, those with greater isolation have a
higher cost and should be used only if clearly needed.
The antivibration mountings are supplied loose, in a separate kit since mounting them in the factory could cause serious damages due to
uncontrollable oscillations that would be created during loading/unloading and transport. Then they must be fitted to the unit’s base during
the installation phase.
The assembly operation of the antivibration mountings is very simple since the fixing holes are already prepared in the basement of the chiller
and the “nut / counternut” system on the support of the dampers makes really easy their installation. It can be seen from the figures that both
the rubber and spring type use the same tightening system. Once the dampers are fixed and the chiller is placed, adjusting the height is
possible by the control nut thus making sure that the unit is perfectly level. In the documentation supplied with the chiller, a drawing indicating
the weight distribution is included. It is possible that the dampers provided are of different types according to the weight features of the chiller;
in this case strictly following the provided plan is necessary. Once installed, a compression of the supports will be noticed; this is absolutely
normal and expected when sizing them.

Interfacing with differents BMS controls
The BMS (Building Management System) is the system that manages the resources and the services available in a building. Normally they
are identified in the following sub-systems: HEVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) control, fire control, access control, closed cir-
cuit video record, traceability of the staff and objects, lifting equipment, audio-video communication systems. The BMS makes the building
management easy by harmonizing the operation of all the controlled resources. The improvement consists of monitoring continuously the
status of the different systems, of their coherent control and of the opportunity to generate reports useful to improve the maintenance servi-
ces. There are several sistems of BMS on the market and the microprocessor of the units in this series BXK has various accessories and / or
configurations that allow machines to communicate all the information operation to these external controllers and centralized.

Connecting a series of units
This allows the timed rotation of a unit in stand-by within a group of maximum 6 units. If one of the machines in operation goes into an alarm
condition, the unit in stand-by is activated. This is done using a digital input and output which, via the “master” (unit 1), sends the command
to activate and deactivate the unit in stand-by (the command is updated every 10 minutes).
The diagram shows how all the electrical panels can be the same, and only during installation does connection have to be made, as in figure,
using a three-pole cable.
During installation the following three points must be kept in mind:
