The main drivers behind IMS/TISPANare:

Open Infrastructure: IMS/TISPANenables network interoperabilitybetween operators and allowsfor “Independence” oftelecommunications networksthrough:

Access Independence: Userscan access multimedia servicesvia any wireless or wirelinenetworks

Architecture Independence:Operators can deploy differentnetwork architectures withoutimpacting service exchange

User Independence: Users arenot tied to a specific operator, aconnection type, or terminalequipment

Service Independence: Carriersare not bounded by a specificinfrastructure; services caneasily be integrated intoIMS/TISPAN framework

Multimedia: IMS/TISPAN supportsany combination of voice, data, video, fax, and picture types ofmultimedia service

Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC):Enables seamless communicationbetween fixed and mobile networksand allows mobility and roamingacross multiple access networks

The IMS/TISPAN network architecture includes four mainnetwork components:1) IMS Core/TISPAN Core (also called PES [PSTN/ISDN]Emulation Subsystem)

2) Application Servers3) Interworking4) Access Networks

IMS/TISPAN Core P-CSCF (Proxy-Call Session Control Function) for

IMS/TISPAN: a SIP proxy that is the first contact pointof IMS terminal; represents UE to other servers

I-CSCF (Interrogating-Call Session Control Function) forIMS/TISPAN: the contact point for IMS connectionsdestined to a subscriber; switches calls based onrouting information

S-CSCF (Serving-Call Session Control Function) forIMS/TISPAN: provides session control services andmaintains the session stage and registration for users

SLF (Subscription Locator Function) for IMS/TISPAN:provides the name of the HSS based on inquires fromI-CSCF, AS and 3GPP AAA

HSS (Home Subscriber Server) for IMS and UPSN(User Profile Server Node) for TISPAN: a databasecontaining user information, including userID/numbering/addressing, profile, location, and security

AGCF (Access Gateway Control Function) for TISPAN:in addition to performing similar functions of P-CSCF,AGCF also acts as a media gateway controller tocontrol the access media gateway or residential mediagateway

IMS/TISPAN Protocols

ChallengesIMS/TISPAN brings both benefits and challenges to NEMsand operators.

Different standards bodies each with uniquerequirements and specifications

 Immature IMS/TISPAN specifications and endlessextensions

 Access Independence that requires interworking

Architecture Independence with proprietaryspecifications and interoperability challenges

User independence requires advanced authentication, authorization and security

Service Independence requires open ApplicationProgramming Interface (API) with the consideration oftoday’s and future services

TestingTo rise above IMS/TISPAN challenges, NEMs need toverify and validate the products/systems underdevelopment, and the service operators need to test andmonitor deployed networks. Key testing areas include:

Feature and Functional TestingDoes each network component functionally work?

Load and Stress TestingCan the network unit or system tolerate the heavysignaling and media traffic? Can it operate undersustained traffic for long durations? Can it handleanomalies?

Conformance TestingDoes the network comply with standards or proprietaryspecifications?

Interoperability TestingCan the network elements communicate with otherswithout problems?

Quality of Service (QoS) MeasurementDoes the media quality meet the Service LevelAgreement?

MonitoringHow is it working?

Quality of Service MeasurementQoS measurements are critical for IMS/TISPAN service.Key QoS parameters, such as Network Delay, Jitter(Variation in Delay) and Packet Loss need to be measuredto ensure the quality of the audio, video, and multimediaservices. Spectra2 measures QoS for both audio andvideo media. Spectra2 supports the following PassiveQoS:

Audio: MOS (Mean Opinion Score), PESQ (PerceptionEvaluation of Speech Quality), R-Factor, and Jitter

Video: MOS-V (Mean Opinion Score – Video), VSTQ,and RT Delay

MonitoringSpectra2 supports IMS/TISPAN network monitoring, statistical report generation, and provides multi-protocolanalysis tools such as call trace, message filtering, andmessage decode.

Users can also apply filters based on source anddestination IP addresses, protocol type, or user-definedASCII or hex strings. Optional media support enables RTPstream analysis and playback. Monitored PDUs can besaved and used in test cases and generator models.

Analysis can be performed in real time or post capture. The captured data can be exported to open formats suchas CSV and text for further analysis using third-party tools.

Spectra2 Advanced Features SIP User Agent (UA) Profiles provide highly intelligent

user emulation. Spectra2 users can have maximumcontrol and customization over profile attributesassigned to end-users

The Spectra2 Application Programming Interface (API)allows users to run tests and save the results of thosetests from a remote system. The Spectra2 API furtherautomates the lab testing function and leverages thevalue of Spectra2 by providing a platform-independentmethod for remotely accessing and controlling Spectra2

DIAMETER Command Code Statistics

Conditional Branching support enables users to handleconditional scripting options such as If/Then/Elsefunctionality. Conditional Branching is included in allSpectra2 protocol Testing Packages for both functionaland load testing

Multi-gateway Support for Megaco and MGCPSpectra2 can emulate a large number of small MediaGateways. This feature allows Spectra2 to support loadtesting of Media Gateway Controllers responsible forcustomer premise equipment such as MultimediaTerminal Adapters, Integrated Access Devices orresidential gateways

STP/SG Tester: Level 2/Level 3 TCAP and ISUP trafficblaster designed to stress STP/SG’s while measuringmetrics such as cross-office delay

Historical Statistics: Collect, analyze and exportstatistics to end-user applications such as MicrosoftExcel

Passive and Active Quality of Service AnalysisPassive QoS enables media analysis within anRTP stream and provides MOS, PESQ, and R-Factorbased scores. Active QoS performs a comparisonbetween source and destination files and provides aPESQ score to describe the quality of the transmittedmedia relative to the source
