The Mississippi Chapter of the Construction Specifications Institute

Having gained so much professionally and personally through CSI, I am incredibly honored to have the opportunity to serve as the first female President for the Mississippi Chapter of CSI. Thank you, Nicholas Gibson for your leadership as President this past year. I

hope you will continue to be a strong presence in this chapter.

Mississippi CSI is one of the strongest professional organizations in the Gulf States Region. The reach of this chapter exceeds the borders of Mississippi. We have former members who have used the knowledge gained through this chapter to propel themselves to great positions with companies in other states and countries. Our own John Murray will be serving as Gulf States Region Vice President. John is a past chapter President and our current Technical Chair. Our upcoming 50th Anniversary serves as proof of this organization’s legacy.

My focus, with the help of our active Board during my 2016-2017 term, is to increase membership of Emerging Professionals and expand the knowledge base of our members through continued certification. To help with this, I will include Construction Documents Technology (CDT) based questions with my message each month, with the answers in the following month’s newsletter. Questions and

Test your knowledge

Being able to understand and interpret written construction documents is key to a successful project. By understanding the roles and relationships of all participants, CDTs help to improve communication among all members of the construction team. 1. The four methods of specifying are:

a. Performance, descriptive, proprietary, and alternate.

b. Descriptive, performance, proprietary, and reference standard.

c. Open, closed, performance, and descriptive.

d. Tentative, standard, descriptive, and performance.

2. The difference between open and closed proprietary specifications concerns:

a. Allowances. b. Submittals. c. Substitutions. d. Alternates.

Betina Latiker, CSI, CDT President

answers will be taken from Steve Tubre’s weekly e-mails. Steve, thanks for your continued dedication to education.

As FY 2016 comes to a close and we look forward to 2017, I would like to encourage you to pick three ways you can make a difference through Mississippi CSI.

For example:

• Increase your visibility in the construction

community.

• Increase your chapter involvement.

(Participate in Programs, Product Shows, Committees, etc.)

• Become a mentor.

Our monthly meeting will be July 6, 2016, at the Farm Bureau Café at Trustmark Park from 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Yes, we are moving back. I hope to see you there.

Our Transfer of Power meeting will be held July 9, 2016, at John and Charlene Dunaway’s home, 5571 Marblehead Drive, Jackson. The meeting will take place from 1:00pm-5:00pm, with a social to follow. I would like to thank the Dunaways again for opening their home, so we may continue to further the CSI cause. This will be the first opportunity for all members and chairs to discuss issues and set goals for the upcoming year. I strongly encourage all current board members and committee chairs to attend. Past Chapter Presidents and leaders, feel free to come and share your wisdom and knowledge. Members, this is a great opportunity for you to see

Monthly Meetings are Moving! We will be moving back to Trustmark Park for our first meeting of the fiscal year on July 6, 2016. Join us for quality food in a comfortable setting. See you back at Trustmark Park!

At the Awards Banquet there was much fun and frivolity. Lacie Gibson, Awards Chair, did another fine job of providing us a dignified yet fun awards banquet. And the meal at Scrooge’s was just perfect. Members had a great time recounting the year and enjoying some CSI camaraderie.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Outstanding Member Award. This year’s recipient was Paul Tauchar.

This award is the Mississippi Chapter’s highest honor and does not have to be given each year. Only when a special candidate is presented to the Board are they considered. Paul’s Chapter service exemplifies the principles behind this award for service to the chapter well beyond expectations. Paul has moved our chapter forward by his willingness to serve and his push to innovate. Paul Tauchar’s service and dedication to the Chapter has been shown time and time again and he is well deserving of this honor.
