Hyperboles

Page 12: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

What Is a Hyperbole

?

Page 13: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

The use of exaggeration or overstatement to

make an emphatic point.

Page 14: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

People make them to sound impressive or to emphasize something’s

characteristics

Page 15: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

People often use expressions

such as: "I nearly died laughing,"

Page 16: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

• I was hopping mad!

She isn’t hopping.

Page 17: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

I tried a thousand times!

Page 18: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

My sister uses so much

makeup that..

when she takes it off we don’t recognize her!

Page 19: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

Now

--You try some on your own!

Page 20: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

My teacher is so old...

Page 21: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

My dog is so

ugly...

Page 22: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

The town where I grew up

is so isolated...

Page 23: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

My aunt is

so skinny.

..

Page 24: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

The mosquitoes here are so big...

Page 25: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

The difference is that a hyperbole is an

exaggeration, not a comparison.

Often, hyperboles are confused with similes

and metaphors…

Page 26: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

For example: His feet were as big as a barge.

It looks like a simile…

BUT

Page 27: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

It is comparing foot size to the size of a

barge. Everyone knows that a barge is

approximately 700 feet long. Imagine getting a pair of shoes that big! Accordingly, it’s not an accurate comparison.

Page 28: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

•So, a hyperbole is like a simile on steroids.

Page 29: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

• Now, for the part I’m not going to teach you…

• Yo’ Momma jokes, You’re so poor jokes, You’re so stupid jokes, Dumb Blonde Jokes… yeah, they’re all hyperbole.

Page 30: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

• Yo mama so hairy Bigfoot is taking her picture!

• Yo mama so stupid when your dad said it was chilly outside, she ran outside with a spoon

• She stood staring at the frozen orange juice because it said "Concentrate".

• Q: How do blonde braincells die?A: alone.

Page 31: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

Hyperbole is supposed to

evoke a ridiculous picture in your

mind…..

Page 32: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

...and in the process, make the point effectively.

Page 33: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

Personification

Page 34: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

Personification is giving human qualities, feelings, action, or

characteristics to something not human.

Page 35: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

Example:

The window winked at me.

Page 36: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

What do you need?

To have personification you usually need… A non-person noun An action a person would do

Page 37: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

On your own paper, write the object being

personified and the meaning of the personification.

Page 38: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

1. The wind sang her mournful song through the falling

leaves.

Page 39: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

2. The microwave timer told me it was time to turn my TV

dinner.

Page 40: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

3. The video camera observed the whole

scene.

Page 41: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

4. The strawberries seemed to sing, "Eat me first!"

Page 42: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

5. The rain kissed my cheeks as it fell.

Page 43: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

6. The daffodils nodded their yellow

heads at the walkers.

Page 44: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

7. The water beckoned invitingly

to the hot swimmers.

Page 45: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

8. The snow whispered as it fell

to the ground during the early morning hours.

Page 46: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

9. The china danced on the shelves

during the earthquake.

Page 47: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

10. The car engine coughed and

sputtered when it started during the

blizzard.

Page 48: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language

Draw an example of personification… you

may use one of the examples from earlier or

make up your own

Page 49: Spi 0701 8-10 figurative language
