President’s Message Hi Everyone, Once again, I would like to thank Jan for taking over from me while I am out of commission, and also to thank Janet for taking over as Show Chair. I have been trying to help in whatever ways I can, but I do not expect to be able to attend the Show this year. Best wishes to all!

Dave Cooper

Vice President’s Message Thank you to the hardy souls who managed to make it to our January meeting. January is turning out to be a challenging month for our meeting! Steve Gonzales’ presentation on the tiny Pleurothallids was fascinating with wonderful photos. I will always be looking at orchids in a different way, trying to identify all the parts. Kudos to those of you who manage to bloom this remarkable orchid family. Many thanks to our judges, Joyce Medcalf, André Couture, Jean Hollebone and Marie-Josée Bergeron and our constant clerk, Marcel Carrière, for making our monthly Show Table more than a feast for the eyes. Thank you to those of you who have already stepped up and signed up for Orchidophilia in April. We still need more help. Remember - it’s fun, it’s rewarding and it’s free to Show Volunteers. February brings us the Annual Auction. The proceeds from the Auction go to support our Judging Centres in Toronto and Montréal. These hard working AOS judges work both at our meetings and come from all over Canada to judge at our show. We need to support them in their work. Any additional funds will go towards other efforts and activities of our Society. Please support this event by bringing donations - and participating in the bidding - you are sure to get a bargain! I look forward to seeing you at the February meeting.

Continuing Program for 2019 - 2020

March Shawn Hillis of Garden Slippers will speak on native Cypripediums

April 39th Annual Ottawa Orchid Society Show April 25 - 26, 2020

May Jean Ikeson will speak On the Trail of White Cattleyas

June - August Summer Vacation

Cypripediums for the Garden Shawn Hillis of Garden Slippers in Calgary, Alberta, will talk about slipper orchids that can be grown out of doors. He will illustrate his talk with photos of those he has over wintered successfully in his backyard and will explain in detail, the care and nurturing required to keep them growing. If he can grow successfully in Calgary, we should be able to do so in Ottawa. He will be bringing plants for sale. Robert St-Jean will have Cypripedium reginae seedlings that were propagated from seed, for those that have already pre-ordered with him.

Jean Hollebone Program Chair

Orchids 101 - February There will be no Orchids 101 this month.

Article in the SOOS Newsletter February 2020 - Volume 55 There is a very interesting article about The ABC of Orchid Nutrition and Growing Tips for All, by Alan Koch and is transcribed by Inge Poot. Alan is the owner of Gold Country Orchids. He was their Speaker in July 2019 at Orchid Fest. This article explains that watering orchids is the most important part of growing orchids. There are also details on fertilizing and culture tips for most orchids. It is well worth reading. The link is: https://soos.ca/current-issue/

Volunteers Needed for the OOS Show Please consider volunteering for the Ottawa Orchid Society Show and Sale on April 24 - 26, 2020. The success of the show depends on your contribution of time and expertise. Functions requiring volunteers are Admissions, Clerks, Draw, Friday set-up and Sunday post-show take-down (Ottawa Society exhibit, Fragrance display, general Show), Hospitality, Membership, Orchid Care, Ottawa Society Member’s Plant Sale, Plant Hotel and Visitor Services. A brief description of each function can be found on the Society website at http://www.ottawaorchidsociety.com/volunteer.html. Don’t be intimidated, most volunteer positions require little or no orchid knowledge. All Society members, friends and family members are welcome to volunteer. Volunteer sign-up forms will be available during the February and March monthly meetings. If unable to attend or undecided at the two meetings, contact Michael at [email protected] indicating function(s) of interest and day and time period when available.

Members’ Sales Table at the OOS Annual Orchid Show

Guidelines for plants you will be selling.

1. Plants or other items for sale must be delivered with the plant list (found on the OOS website) to the sales table between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 25, 2020. If you are unable to make it during these times and would like to make alternative arrangements, please contact Roy John in advance of the show at [email protected]

2. Plants must be well rooted, healthy and free of bugs. The person in charge of the

sale table has the right to refuse any plants that do not meet reasonable plant health standards. Plants may also be inspected by other members of the Show Committee.

3. Each plant must have two (2) plastic tags: one tag must have the plant’s full

name; the second, the owner’s name, the number on the plant list and the price. Please note that 10% will be deducted from the selling price and will go to the Ottawa Orchid Society to help support its activities.

4. Members are limited to selling 20 plants or less. Members wishing to sell more than

20 plants must submit their request by email to the two OOS Show Chairpersons, Janet Johns ([email protected]) and Dave Cooper ([email protected]), at least two weeks before the show. If approval to sell more than 20 plants is granted, the member must be present to assist in selling the plants.

5. The Members’ Sale Table is in no way responsible for plants or other items meant

for sale that might go missing. 6. Proceeds from plant sales will be paid after approximately 5:15 p.m. on Sunday,

April 26. Plants not sold must be picked up at this time also. It is the seller’s sole responsibility to pick up unsold plants at this time. Members who wish to pick up their plants earlier must advise Roy John when dropping off their plants. Those members’ unsold plants will be pulled from the sale table on Sunday and prepared for pick up along with the proceeds from sold plants.

If you have any questions or require further information, please contact Roy John in advance of the show at [email protected], or at 613-748-9963. This plant registration form is available on the OOS web site under “Show Information”, at http://www.ottawaorchidsociety.com/show_info.html.

Vanda Culture Sheet Van-dah American Orchid Society

The Vanda Alliance is made up mostly of warm- and full-sun-growing orchids with colorful flowers. Originating in tropical Asia, they are easily grown in warm climates, where plants are cultivated outside in light shade, such as in a lath house. In climates where winters are cold, they are often summered outside, and grown inside during the winter in a sunny window, or year round in a greenhouse. Smaller growing ascocendas are best outside tropical conditions. Light is a crucial factor in blooming most vandaceous plants. There are three types of vandas: strap-leaved, semi-terete and terete. The first type has broader, flat leaves, while terete types have round, pencil-shaped leaves. The semi-teretes are hybrids between the two, with an intermediate leaf shape. Terete types need full sun, and are best grown in high-light climates. In a greenhouse, give the plants about 25 to 35 percent shade, less in winter if overcast. Leaves should be a medium green, not dark green. In warm, bright climates, you can grow any type of Vanda outside (if warm) with partial shade for strap-leaved types and semi-teretes (especially in midday in summer) or inside (when cold) in a bright, south window. In climates where winters are overcast, try ascocendas. Grow them outside in summer and in full sun inside during the winter. Be careful to aclimatize plants to avoid burn.

Temperatures for most vandas should be warm; a minimum night temperature of 55° F is recommended. Colder spells can be tolerated for a short time if it is not windy. Optimum temperatures are 60° to 70° F at night, and a maximum of 95° F during the day. Warmer temperatures mean faster growth, which must be balanced with higher humidity, air movement, and increased water and fertilizer. Days should be warm and humid for optimum plant growth. Water should be applied copiously when the plants are growing, but the roots must dry quickly. Because of this, and their extensive root system, they are mostly grown in slatted-wood baskets, or in pots with a coarse potting medium. If their situation is warm and sunny, they may need daily watering. Water sparingly in the winter or during cloudy weather. Humidity of 80 percent is ideal. In tropical climates this may be easy to obtain. In a greenhouse, this is easier to provide by using an evaporative cooler. In the home, place the plants on trays of gravel partially filled with water. Air movement must be strong.

Page 11: SPIKE - Ottawa Orchid Societyottawaorchidsociety.com/february_2020.pdf · The Ottawa Orchid Society meets the third Sunday of every month from September to May, except April, at 1:30

11

Fertilize with a balanced (such as 20-20-20) fertilizer applied full strength once a week during warm weather or use a one-quarter-strength solution at every watering. During cool or cloudy weather, apply fertilizer once every two to four weeks. Use a high-phosphorus fertilizer (such as 10-30-20) every third application to promote flowering. Potting should be done in the spring. Plants in baskets do not need to be repotted often. Leave them unless the potting medium breaks down. Set the plant, with the old basket intact, into a container of water to make the aerial roots more pliable, and then set plant and basket into a larger basket. For plants in pots, repot in a slightly larger pot, positioning the plant in the center. Use a coarse medium, whether fir bar, tree fern or charcoal, and work it around the roots. Keep shaded, humid, but drier at the roots until new root tips grow. Do not overpot. http://www.aos.org/orchids/culture-sheets/vanda.aspx

Editor’s Wrap

Please consider being a volunteer for our Annual Orchid Show in April. Many jobs still need to be filled. You have free admission for the day that you are volunteering. I am doing the display this year and could use some help Friday night setting up and Sunday night taking down the display. Thanks to Maria Martins for ordering new tablecloths for the display. They will look fantastic on the round tables. These can also be used for the out of town displays. Jan Johns and Helen Nitsckie are looking for your flowering orchids for the Orchid Society of the Royal Botanical Gardens Orchid Show. The information is on page 9. Robert St-Jean’s detailed article on Cypripedium reginae can be found in the Feb. 2019 issue of SPIKE on the OOS website. There is an Orchids 101 in the March 2019 issue of SPIKE also on the OOS Website. Thanks to the American Orchid Society for the culture information on Vandas. Many of us have different types of Vandas and this information will help us all. For the OOS Members going to the WOC in Taiwan, please send me some of your pictures to be posted in the April issue of SPIKE. It will be an incredible Show!! Have a fantastic time and stay safe from the coronavirus! If you have something that you wish to share or post in SPIKE, please send me an email on or before the 1st of the month. If submitted later, it will be entered into the next month’s SPIKE. As always, it takes many people to put SPIKE together each month. Many thanks for all who contributed this month. Until next month, Happy Orchid Growing!!

Happy Valentine’s Day!!
