We achieved our target in 1989 and the first SPO Compact Flanges were used in 1989 on Saga Petroleum’s 2/4-14 riser.
SPO CF was chosen for the Snorre TLP Production and Export riser. Delivery started in 1991 (~1100 flanges).
SPO CF designed and deliveredtitanium flanges for the Heidrun Drilling riser in 1994.
SPO CF standard completed in 1996.
SPO CF was chosen as the NORSOK compact flange standard in 2001.

Positive experience with the SPO CF
Never an operational leakage developed from more than 500,000 flange-years of operation mainly due to 100% static sealing conditions.Substantial weight and space savings: WN flange joints are typically 60 – 70% lighter than corresponding ASME flange joints
Load capacity and point of leakage will normally exceed the load capacity of the adjoining pipe.
Designed to suit commonly used valve standards in the petroleum industry.

Process piping when all was supplied by Vector:It is difficult to find any negative experience from the use of the SPO CF before new manufacturers started supply of flanges to NORSOK L-005 in 2004. All flanges and valves were supplied without leakage problems during testing on site in the Norne and the Snorre B projects.
Norne FPSO: First process piping: About 200 SPO CF Connections have operated successfully since 1998.
Snorre B semisub.: All flanges of 6” and above in class 600, 1500, 2500 and 4500 are SPO CF.Operated successfully since 2001.

Positive experience with the SPO CF
Large cost savings during modifications because:The compact flange joint has been accepted to have same reliability regarding leakage as a welded joint (DNV report 2010-03-12,”Reliability Evaluation of SPO Compact Flange system”)The cold installation of a compact flange joint can be done without shut down, and it reduces total cost substantially when compared with welding in a habitat.
Statfjord B.Comparison between 14” Class 1500 NORSOK and ASME
Sleipner R.Shut down of Norwegian gas supply to Europe reduced from 22 to 8 days when using CF in place of welding.

SPO® Compact Flange Åsgard Subsea Compression
Bolted joints subsea are now typically qualified to be 100% leaktight for the service life of the system through extensive cyclic testing to maximum and minimum design temperatures, and fully pressurized.
Bolted joints in process industry offshore and on land are defined as possible leak sources, and its use is restricted in unclassified areas, i.e. in areas where ignition sources may occur.
For how long will authorities accept this inconsist ency?

Any pressure or temperature:
Complete standards for API pressure classes 10ksi (689bar) and 15ksi (1034bar) flanges up to 24” (DN600) are now available.
An improved standard for class 150 flanges has been developed. Qualified for cryogenic service:
Tested by shock cooling From +20 oC to -180oC in 3 minutes, with pressurized N2He at 30bar.Result: No leak detected From 3 cycles!

The test was made in the shops of Westad Industri AS on 2010-07-08.
Liquid Nitrogen was introduced at the bottom of the pipe, which was pressurized to 30 barg.
In spite of a very assymmetric and quick cooldown, there was no leakage detected from 3 trials witnessed by DNV.

Cryogenic service
From qualification testing of a flexible pipe LNG l oading system at the Ebara test Facilities in Nevada 2002
Regular staff claimed that the ASME flange connections always leak during cooldown
No leakage observed from any SPO CF with IX seal ring
Leakage observed from every ASME flange connection at every start-up before retightening the bolts.

• Maintenance hatch difficult to keep leaktight during rapid cooldown.
• Maintenance hatch suitable for minor repairs and replacement of seat, only.
• Recertification with in-situ pressure and seat test may not be possible.
• Major repairs will require replacement and hot work when installing a new valve.
• Relatively long end to end dimension.

• Benefits above welded end valve with hatch:– Reduced dimensions– Reduced weight– Can sustain higher loads, e.g. Thermal shock without
risk of leakage /emission to the environment– Valve part (midsection) can be fully repaired and
recertified in a workshop, and reinstalled without hot work.
• Negative:– The IXS sealring require some flexibility in the piping
system for removal and reinstalling the valve.– Metal to metal sealing surfaces are vulnerable to
scratches from mechanical impacts and lack of cleanliness.
– Propriatory single source sealing technology.
