The Hard Truth

with Aaron Degler

Capable MeWe often compare our-

selves to others. Why can’t I be thinner, fitter, have a better understanding of food or have more time? These are questions I ask myself all the time.

Since I became a personal t r a i n e r I h a v e a l w a y s strived to make the best e f -fort to be physical fit. When I started my weight loss journey more than six years ago, I could not even run a quarter of a mile. My first goal was to be able to run a quarter of a mile and when I had accomplished a quarter mile I set my goal to a half mile.

Every time I reached my goal I made another goal and another goal striving to always be bet-ter. A quarter mile was

what I was capable of, then a half mile is what I was capable of and eventu-ally I was capable of a half marathon (13.1 miles).

We can’t compare our-selves to others because we all have different capa-bilities. My grandmother passed away about a year ago and she was one of the most capable people I know. She lived in a small apartment and used a walker to get around her apartment.

Her doctor told her that she needed to keep active and exercise. She couldn’t drive or walk anywhere from her apartment to exercise. My grandmother would use her walker and walk in her apartment twice a day. She would do seven or eight down and backs (about 20 feet) in the morning and again in the evening.

To most of us this might not sound hard or even worth the time to do it. My 92 year old grandmother did what she was capable of doing. The doctor told

her she need to exercise and she never came up with an excuse, only a solution. She could have said she didn’t have room, she was too old, she was scared or say she had a walker. She gave none of these reasons not to exer-cise and exercised twice a day every day because that is what she was ca-pable of doing.

The Hard Truth…Don’t compare yourself to oth-ers, do what YOU ARE CAPABLE OF DOING.

Focus on yourself

bles. Conner said the team was doing a good job of driving the ball down the field prior to the turnovers.

“They are improving every week,” added the coach. “We are getting our blocks down. We just have to protect the ball.”

Zack Ingram led the Bears with 65 yards. Con-ner also noted Ingram had no turnovers.

The Bears will play their first road game of the season Friday at Wichita Falls Christian and will get themselves focused on the upcoming game.

Bowie threatened to score on the opening drive, but stalled out inside the 30. The team hit pay dirt on its sec-ond possession as Brady scored on a 28-yard run. Hirschi answered on the next drive, but a blocked extra point gave the Rab-bits and edge.

With a halftime score of 7-6, Hirschi took the second half kick, but Bowie’s defense came out ready to work. The Rab-bits forced Hirschi back-wards until Tod Jackson grabbed an interception and sent Bowie’s offense back to work. Bowie made short work of the 21-yard field with Brock’s scoring catch.

“Our goal at halftime was to score before them and we did that,” Stark said. “Getting that score was pretty important. We did not want to get behind Hirschi.”

Hirschi was able to reach the end zone again on a big pass play. Bowie stopped the two-point conversion attempt to set what would be the final score.

“Hirschi had a couple of big plays, but I thought our defense played well against their speed,” said Stark. “We did what we had to do on offense to get the win.”

The coach added that the offensive line will be a focus this week as the new players in that posi-

tion have gotten a little experience.

Bowie has not started the season 1-0 since 2008, the last time the Jackrab-bits dropped to 2A. That season, Bowie was 7-4, reaching the playoffs for just the second time since 1982.

Up next for the Jack-rabbits will be Lake Worth in Bowie’s first home game of the season. The Frogs defeated North Side 53-7 in their season opener.

“Lake Worth is fast, it’s going to be a lot like Hirshci. They are coming off a big win so they will have a lot of confidence,” Stark said. “We are just going to focus on get-

be pretty good,” Keck added. “Most of our pass yards came off play ac-tion.”

Running back Tate Fenogl io took snaps for the Indians and the threat of the runner helped open up Nocona’s passing game. Fenoglio still led the team with 177 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

“Edward Cardoza had a big game catching the ball. I knew he could catch, but I wasn’t sure if Tate could get it to him,” Keck laughed.

Cardoza had 82 re-ceiving yards with three scores. Bryce Dingler had one catch for a 43 yards and ran for 36 yards. John Jennings added 96 yards on the ground with one touchdown.

N o c o n a ’ s d e f e n s e had its hands full with Whitewright quarter-back Tyrone Swoopes. The QB accounted for 305 of the team’s rush-ing yards and threw for another 175 yards.

“Swoopes is really good. I think the only time we stopped him was when we had to at the end of the game,” Keck said. “The defense played well at times, but got tired.”

While the Indians had a solid performance, Keck feels there is still plenty of room for im-provement.

“After watching the film, I told them I felt like we beat a very good

player,” he explained. “We made a million mis-takes and stopped using good technique when we got tired. I don’t feel like we would have beat a good team.”

It was not pretty, but Nocona earned its record-setting 12th victory Fri-

day in a 15-13 win a g a i n s t Gunter to earn the regional champi -onship.

“Horrible,” was how Nocona Head Coach Brad Keck described his team’s performance dur-ing Friday’s game. “It may not have been the worst game we’ve played, but it certainly was the sloppiest.”

The Indians were plagued with penalties and had trouble lining up incorrectly and some bad snaps. During a team meeting Saturday, Keck made sure his team knew how fortunate it was to still be alive in the play-offs.

“We got a gift from God,” he told them. “What are you going to do with it?”

Nocona had a good first quarter, scoring all 15 of its points, but was its own worst enemy as penalties began to pile up. The defense played solid and allowed just

Nocona’s Tate Fenoglio breaks through the Gunter defense to score his second touchdown of the night. The Indians went on to win the regional championship with a 15-13 win over the Tigers. The team became the first Nocona team to ever record 12 wins in a season.one Gunter first down on the Tigers’ first two pos-sessions.

Tate Fenoglio broke a 33-yard run on the Indians’ first play and capped off the drive with a 13-yard touchdown run. Edward Cardoza caught a Hayden Hill pass to give Nocona an 8-0 start.

A promising start on the team’s second posses-sion looked like it would stall out due to penal-ties. On third-and-21,

Fenoglio caught a short pass across the middle, broke a few tackles and went 37-yards for the score. Raul Anaya’s PAT put the Indians up by 15 points.

Gunter was able to answer on its next pos-session on a 31-yard pass play. The teams then went on to trade a pair of punts each. Nocona made its way to the 30-yard line with a minute left in the first half, but was

unable to move the ball and the Indians’ went to the locker room up by eight.

The second half was dominated by defense. The teams traded punts on their first possessions and interceptions on their second. Following Hill’s pick in the end zone, the Indians started on the 20-yard line.

On the first snap, the ball soared over Hill’s head and into the end

zone. Hill attempted to recover the ball, but in-stead it was recovered by the Gunter defense for a touchdown. The Tigers went for two, but Nocona’s defense was able to stop the two-point attempt just short of the goal line.

“That was definitely the defensive play of the game,” Keck said.

ans alive as the game pro-gressed. After a fumble gave Gunter the ball deep in Nocona territory, Hill came up with his second interception of the half to preserve the lead.

“Our defense played really good,” added the coach. “Even though we got misaligned a lot, Gunter always happened to run where we had the extra man. Billy Speights probably played his best defensive game of the year. Hayden had two big interceptions. Bryce had 13 tackles. A lot of people played really well.”

Hill connected with Bryce Dingler to convert a critical third down. On the next play, Hill broke a 56-yard run to put No-cona at the 10-yard line. Gunter defense held and the Indians turned the ball over on downs, but had burned valuable time off the clock.

Gunter took the ball over with 89 yards to go, a pair of timeouts and 4:15 left on the clock. The Tigers converted a fourth down and received some help in the form of Nocona penalties. Soon, Gunter was within the 30-yard line, eyeing the end zone.

Nocona caught a break when an illegal substitu-tion backed the Tigers into a third and eight with 1:12 remaining. An incompletion set up what would be the final play and Hill and Fenoglio batted down the last ditch effort to give Nocona the ball back with the lead and one minute remain-ing.

Two kneel downs se-cured the best record in Nocona football history.

“To get a win playing like we did, that may be a minor miracle,” said Keck.

Fenoglio finished the night with 96 rushing yards and 52 reception yards. Hill ran for 76 and threw for another 118. Dingler added 11 yards on the ground and 16

A Will Can Change Ev-erything

I overheard a conver-sation in the gym the other day.

You were thinking I was about to give you some great gossip didn’t you? Sorry to disappoint you, but no great gossip here. It was just a couple of people talking about food and diet.

One person said to the other “I need to start eat-ing better.” I found the choice of wording very interesting. This individ-ual used the word “need” indicating that eating better is something he or she should start doing, but may not necessarily want to do.

W e u s e t h e w o r d “need” often when we de-scribe what changes we want to make. “I need to start exercising.” “I need to start getting more rest.” “I need to not eat so much fast food.” Our list of “need” goes on and on. Unfortunately, often times our “needs” never get put into action.

What if we were to change the word “need” to “will”? How would one little word change our outlook on our situation? The word “will” indicates something you are going

NoconaContinued from 1B

through the air.Nocona will now focus

on the state semifinal at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Aledo against Corsicana Mildred.

“They are a really good football team,” Keck not-ed. “The points they are putting up is unbeliev-able.”

The Eagles have av-eraged a staggering 57 points per game this sea-son. The team’s only loss was a 70-22 defeat to Centerville. Defensively, Mildred is allowing an average of 11 points per game.

“They have a strong of-fense with a good running back. That’s the kid we have to stop,” the coach explained. “But, at the same time, they have a division I quarterback who has already commit-ted to Iowa.”

Despite the high scor-ing offense, Keck feels Mildred has not faced a defense like Nocona’s through most of the sea-son.

“Our defense is playing

at a high level,” he said.He also believes the In-

dians’ linemen match up well against the Eagles’ defense.

“A strong running game has hurt Midred in the past,” he explained. “I think we can run the ball on them. We have to keep ball control and get first downs. Then we have to finish with points. Keep-ing possession is going to be important. They can’t score if they are not on the field.”

He added he hopes to be able to take ad-vantage of play-action passes. Keck also noted the team will have to avoid turnovers and pen-alties, which it did not do

against Gunter.“We are lucky enough

to have another week of football,” he said. “If we play like we did on Friday, we won’t have another.”

Change your needs to wills

to put into action and do. One word could al-low us to stop thinking about all the things we “need” to start and we could actually see posi-tive momentum driving us forward with a “will.” “I will start exercising on Monday.” “I will stop getting fast food during lunch.” “I will start go-ing to bed at ten o’clock every evening.”

There is power in words that we use to describe our intentions. Putting our “needs” into “wills” all starts in our mind and being mentally prepared is 90 percent of the battle. Our limi-tations are often only limitations because we put them on ourselves.

I encourage each of you to me mindful when speaking of your inten-tions of what word choic-es you make.

The Hard Truth…A “will” can change our destination and a “will” can change our arrival to our destination.
