PHOTOSHOP CS6 Spot the Difference Here we will use the Selection Tools to create a before and after picture puzzle. Then we will see if your classmates can spot the differences in your puzzle.

Here we will use the Selection Tools to create a

before and after picture puzzle. Then we will see

if your classmates can spot the differences in your

Instructions 1. Open the student answer file (sa_spotDifferences.psd) from your

folder.

2. Highlight the Background Layer in the Layers Palette by single clicking on it (if it is not already highlighted)

3. Ctrl + J to duplicate the background layer.

Figure 1: Background Layer has been duplicated.

4. Rename this layer “My Changes” by double clicking on the words

“Background copy” and typing over.

5. Select the Move Tool (V) from the Tools palette.

6. Drag the copy of the picture over to the right side of the canvas. (Tip: If you hold Shift on the keyboard while you drag, the picture will move horizontally in a straight path.)

Difference #1 – Adding another cloud 7. Select the Zoom Tool (Z).

8. Zoom in a little on the picture on the RIGHT side so we have a good view of the clouds and sky.

9. Select the Polygon Lasso Tool

10. Single click anywhere on the outside edge of a cloud.

11. Move to a new place on the outside edge of the cloud and click again.

12. Continue to click on the perimeter of the cloud until you are back to the place where you made your first click. You should now see that the cloud is selected with the dashed line, aka “marching ants”.

14. While holding the Alt key on your keyboard, drag out a copy of the cloud.

15. Ctrl + T to bring up the Free Transform Tool (it is not on the Tools Palette)

16. Resize the cloud by dragging one of the corner handles.

(To make the cloud smaller, drag towards the center of the cloud. To make the cloud bigger, do the opposite.) Tip: Hold SHIFT + drag to resize proportionally

17. Press ENTER to finalize the resizing. (This makes the Free Transform box go away)

18. Ctrl + D on the keyboard to deselect the cloud. (The “marching ants” will go away)

Difference #2 – Adding the balloon 19. File >> Place

20. Choose the balloon image, and click the Place button on the Place Window.

21. Resize the balloon image by holding SHIFT and dragging a corner handle towards the middle of the balloon.

22. Press ENTER to finalize the Place.

23. Select the Move Tool and drag the balloon to the location you want it to be in.

24. Right click the balloon layer and choose Rasterize Layer. (We do this so we can edit the balloon image)

25. Zoom (Z) in to the balloon to get a better view.

26. Select the Magic Wand Tool (W)

27. Change the Tolerance setting to 50.

28. Click on an area of the balloon. (Note: The entire balloon will not get selected. We will get more of the

balloon in later steps)

29. SHIFT + Click on another part of the balloon. Now more of the balloon will be selected.

30. Continue SHIFT + Clicking until you have selected what you want.

Note: If you go too far, you can ALT + Click to take away from the selection.

31. Select > Inverse from the menu. (This will select all the pixels EXCEPT the balloon on the balloon layer only)

32. Press DELETE on the keyboard to remove the pixels surrounding the balloon. Note: Don’t worry if things look pixelated at this point. Remember we are zoomed in. At 100% the balloon will look better.

33. Ctrl + D to Deselect the balloon. This will make the “marching ants” go away.

Difference #3 – Copying a sun kissed mountain peak to another location

34. Select the “My Changes” layer by clicking on it.

35. Zoom in closer on one of the mountain peaks that the sun is shining on.

36. Select the Polygon Lasso Tool

37. Single click anywhere on the outside edge of the mountain peak you want to copy.

38. Move to a new place on the outside edge of the peak and click again.

39. Continue to click on the perimeter of the peak until you are back to the place where you made your first click. You should now see that the peak is selected with the dashed line, aka “marching ants”.

40. Select the Move Tool (V)

41. While holding the Alt key on your keyboard, drag out a copy of the peak and release where you want the peak to end up.

42. Ctrl + T to resize the peak if needed. (This will make it look a little more random. Remember to press ENTER to

finalize your resizing)

Difference #4 – Copying the house 44. Zoom in to the area surrounding the house on the hill.

45. Select the Quick Selection Tool (W)

46. Change the brush size to a small size (I chose 2)

47. Drag across your house until it is selected.

Difference #5 and 6, the van and the trees. You know enough to do these yourself!

• The van is completed much the same way as the balloon (See instructions 19-33).

• The trees can be completed using the polygon lasso tool or Quick

Selection Tool.

Revealing the Changes

1. Balloon added – Here I brought the balloon image from the folder into the image.

2. Mountain peak added - I selected a mountain peak and copied it into the new place.

3. Clouded added - I selected a cloud and copied it into a new place. 4. House added - I selected a house and copied it into a new place. 5. Group of trees added 6. Van added to road – The van was brought in from the folder into

the image.
