Businesses are recognizing the impact a school
recycling program has on fostering sustainable
recycling behavior. This is evident
with Public Service of NH who selected
THE CLUB to be one of the beneficiaries of
the Manchester Monarchs PSNH Power
Play Program for the 2003-2004 Season!
With the Power Play Program, PSNH makes a donation
to New Hampshire non-profits each time the Monarchs
enter or score on a Power Play.
In November, THE CLUB was invited to be the hon-
orary guest non-profit organization at a Monarchs home
game and was represented by 4 students and 2 teachers
from the Epping Elementary School (see School
Profile). In February, THE CLUB received notice from
PSNH that the Monarchs scored 7 goals on their homePower Play and they were processing a check for the
School Recycling Club! Thanks to PSNH for giving
THE CLUB notable public recognition and providing us
with the opportunity to improve school recycling!

Student RecyclerPeer MatchingProgram
ManchesterMonarchs “Score”for THE CLUB
Charlestown Middle School and the Whitefield School
have volunteered to help THE CLUB embark on an
exciting new school recycling program that connects
student recyclers throughout the state. The idea for a
“student to student” recycler peer matching program
transpired at the 2002 NH School Recycling Summit.
Since December, THE CLUB has been working under
an EPA grant to bring this idea to fruition.
THE Student Recycler PeerMatching Opportunities include:
A School Recycling Listserv for students – a central place
to electronically post questions, comments and ideas
regarding school recycling/waste reduction programs.
Speak Out – an additional column in THE CLUB
newsletter written by student recyclers.
If your students want to help THE CLUB develop one
of these networking programs that will broaden and
strengthen school recycling in the state, possibly
becoming a model for other parts of the country,
please contact Cindy at [email protected]. We’d
love to hear your ideas!!

Samuel Morey School
School ProfileThe fourth graders of the Samuel Morey Elementary School in Fairlee,
VT, have been busy educating themselves and their school about thebenefits of recycling. After researching the best recycling program for
their school, they embarked on a poster campaign, conveying recycling
guidelines and reminders throughout the school. They also created a
recycling skit which they performed at an all school assembly. And they
haven’t forgotten to keep THE CLUB informed about these great activi-
ties. So far they have earned 7 STARS!!! Achievement Stickers!

Epping Elementary SchoolThe Epping Elementary School in Epping, NH, has implemented the
largest classroom vermicomposting program ever experienced by THE
CLUB! Lisa Madison, 4th grade teacher and program leader, purchased
15 of worms and 15 worm bins, one for each classroom. Lisa is fondly
known as “the queen wormer” and the other teachers call themselves “the
worker wormers”. Lisa and her students oversee the program. They pro-
vide vermicomposting training, inspect the bins weekly, and provide
advice when needed. The worms even received egg shells on Valentines
Day! Plus, Mrs. Madison started the Ecology Club, the hottest club at
school. The 15 members meet weekly to plan ecology programs and are
planning to use the vermicompost in one of their school gardens.

Magnetic Mediathat can be RECYCLEDHave you received unwanted CD’s in the mail recently? What do you do with
your old VHS tapes? Many Americans toss them in the trash. An estimated 40
million pounds of video and audio tapes, diskettes, and CDs are thrown away
each year! But they can be recycled. Help your school community be a part of the
solution by recycling these magnetic media items. EcoMedia will “deconstruct” your
school’s VHS and Beta cassettes, audio cassettes, computer diskettes, CDs, CD-Rs, CD-
Roms and other magnetic media to reuse the different parts. Contact EcoMedia at 1-800-359-4601 or visit
them on-line at www.ecomedia.net to start recycling these items for FREE! Earn A STAR! by start-
ing a magnetic media recycling program at your school!

Sell Backyard Compost BinsThe money raised can help offset the cost of the
school’s recycling program or help fund a class trip!
The fourth annual backyard compost bin sale offers schools the opportunity to raise
money while providing residents with an easy to use backyard compost bin at a low
price! Schools can sell the bins for $30 (retail value $80) each, or use the sale as a
fundraiser and raise the price to $35, thus earning $5 for every bin sold!
The sale works very much like a Girl Scout cookie sale. To participate in the Backyard
Compost Bin sale, here’s what to do:
1. Contact NRRA/THE CLUB at 603-798-5777 as soon as possible for a participation packet.2. Promote the sale within your community (free promotional material and sample bin provided)
3. Accept orders from residents until May 22nd, 2004, keeping track of who orders bins.
4. Return the completed order to NRRA/THE CLUB.
5. Distribute the bins to the residents.
These durable bins (www.earthmachine.com) have proven to be a very popular means of turning organic waste into a
valuable soil ammendment plus, each low maintainence bin comes with a 31 page “How To” booklet.
Locker Clean-Out PartyAnother great activity for finding treasures
in other’s trash!
Lots and lots of paper can be found in the depths of a child’s
locker by the end of the school year. Be prepared to salvage this
‘waste’ by offering the opportunity to recycle it and save resources as
well as school dollars. Remember, an item recycled is an avoided
disposal fee! THE CLUB has the greatest vehicle for collecting recy-
clables – Borrow the The RecycleMobile to be on-site during
locker cleanout. Turn the task of cleaning out lockers into a fun
filled school recycling event. Contact THE CLUB at 798-5777 or
email at [email protected] to schedule your trailer!
The RecycleMobile was developed to help make recycling at special events low-cost,
highly visible and efficient. It is a simple to use, eye-catching recycling unit consist-
ing of a fiberglass box with six collection holes (3 per side) that is attached to a 4' by 6' trailer
and houses six - 32 gallon barrels.
