SPRING 2012 2012 EMS Banquet — The 2012 EMS banquet was held on Saturday February 18th, we saw our highest attendance of 315 people!! The night was filled with special events, Honor Guard presentation, years of service awards, survivor celebration, presentation by Robert Brunnings children and the prestigious Bob Brunning Award of Excellence. Special thanks to the new Dane County EMS Association Honor Guard for their posting of the colors to start the night off. The group has put in countless hours of practice and work and is doing a great job representing our County. Thank you to all of them. We had a total of ten agencies who celebrated 35 years of service. Thirty individuals were also honored for 20, 25, 30 and 35 years of service! This is quite a commitment in a field where the average longevity is only 5 years! Congratulations to all those who were honored. Ten of the 24 cardiac arrest survivors were able to attend the celebration. They ranged in age from 37 to 74 years old. It was wonderful for them to meet their EMS crews and dispatchers. We handled things a little differently this year and did a photo/video montage of all the survivors, their stories and their crews. This seemed to be a very smooth way of celebrating all the stories without everyone having to speak in front of 300 people! Special thanks to Moonstruck Media for their donation of the video production. Robert Brunning, tragically passed away in 1997 after many years of instrumental contribution as the EMS coordinator for Dane County. We were honored this year to have his daughter Chelsea and sons Christopher and Drew at the banquet. They were able to share history on their father and present the Annual Bob Brunning Award of Excellence. There were three nominees this year, McFarland EMS and Sandy Mortenson from Brooklyn EMS. This years recipient was Dr. Mel Pearlman! Dr. Pearlman is the Medical Director at Waunakee Area EMS. He has been extremely dedicated to the entire Dane County system since 1990. His commitment and vision for the community of emergency medicine has been instrumental. Thank you Dr. Mel!

Its time to start practicing triaging again! The more we use the tags the more likely it is we will remember to use them when we have an actual mass casualty incident.

So beginning March 1st all agencies should tag all patients on the 1st of the month. The hospitals will then collect the tags, check accuracy of tagging and return them to the County for collection.

You can review the mass casualty and START/ JumpSTART triaging information at our website.

The official Dane County Policy is complete!! Thanks to the Police Chiefs for their assistance with the policy and with keeping EMS safe in the field!! Also thanks to the hospitals for their assistance in the process.

For full details contact your EMS Director/Chief. To the right you will see a picture of the evidence boxes to be used in the rare circumstance we actually have to take the weapon to the hospital. That should always be a last resort.

Dane County Public Safety Communications Center Update— Noticing a lot of new voices on the “Comm Center” end of the radio? That’s because there are a lot of new Communicators. In the past 3+ years we have hired nearly 40 people, and many of those Communicators have, or soon will be, trained as Fire/EMS dispatchers.

Our department is interested in continuous improvement, and your feedback is vital to that goal. We’re interested in hearing from you, ‘how’s it going?’. If you have questions, comments or concerns (positive or negative) about an incident, we want to know, the sooner the better.

EMS Crew Chiefs should feel free to contact the PSC Duty Supervisor (267-3913) for immediate concerns, alternatively our website (www.dane911.com) has current contact information, as well as a form to electronically submit your feedback.

SPRING

We are pleased to introduce CampHERO an exciting new summer camp that introduces girls to the protective services. CampHERO is designed to help girls develop cour-age, confidence and character so they can make the world a better place through public service. Girls will explore their interests and skills through experiential activities in the areas of police, fire, emergency medical services and dispatch. The curriculum was designed by professionals in the protective services with guidance by Girl Scouts, the experts in leadership experiences for girls

Girls need to know that they are smart enough, strong enough and brave enough to pursue a paid or vol-unteer career as a police officer, fire fighter, EMT/paramedic or dispatcher. Nationwide, only 13% of po-lice and 3.6% of fire professionals are female, leaving girls with few role-models to inspire and guide. CampHERO is an effort to bridge that gap by helping girls discover their abilities &interests, connecting them with a network of mentors, and inspiring them to take action in making the world a better place.

CampHERO is open to any girl entering Kindergarten up to recent 12th grade graduates. Participants will train at various sites around Madison. Girls in grades 4–12 will stay overnight at beautiful Camp Bran-denburg.

CampHERO can serve up to 280 girls and in order to make that possible, we need help! You can sup-port CampHERO by getting the word out, volunteering and/or donating money or supplies. Details can be found at www.facebook.com/camphero4girls or by request at [email protected]. Spread the Word!

Any school-aged girl is welcome to attend CampHERO. We are particularly interested in reaching girls who do not have a connection to police/fire/EMS departments. Print and email materials for distribution are available at your request. Information is available on-line 24/7. Please help us spread the word!

Volunteer!

It will take over 100 volunteers to implement CampHERO. We are actively recruiting volunteers to do everything from running the show to clean up. The schedule is flexible, volunteer jobs can be shared and training is provided! Email us or visit the facebook page to get an organizational chart, position descrip-tions and volunteer application.

Make a Donation!

It’s important that CampHERO is accessible for all girls and we are relying on the generosity of individu-als and businesses to make that happen. Registration fees will cover only a portion of our total operating costs. In addition, we are offering ‘camperships’ to any families requiring financial assistance. We are estimating a need of $12,000. There are several ways you could help.

• Purchase a sponsorship package. • Make a cash donation. • Send a girl to camp by funding a campership. • Donate ‘giveaway gifts’ for the campers and volunteers. • Donate supplies or the use of equipment.

Details can be found in the Sponsor tab on the facebook page or by emailing.

Thank you for your support!
