25TH Anniversary Party

F E A T U R E

The UK’s Godfather of SwingBringing his own special brand of swing and jazz to Blackheath Halls, Ray Gelato and his 7 piece band the Giants are celebrating their 25th Anniversary with a special show in March. With a long standing 14 year Christmas residency at Ronnie Scott’s jazz club, London-born saxophonist and singer Ray and his band perform all over the world in an energetic, superbly entertaining show that will have you out of your seats and shouting for more. Incorporating the music of jazz/swing legends such as Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington, Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra as well as original songs, this is an anniversary celebration not to be missed.

We asked Ray about his jazz inspirations and how he’s feeling about bringing his sound to Blackheath Halls for the first time. What was it about swing and the saxophone that really inspired you?I first fell in love with the sax when my dad took me to see Bill Haley and The Comets. After that I was hooked! My parents bought me a sax and when I looked into the evolution of Rock n Roll, I discovered Swing music with all its fabulous musicians. You're seasoned performers at Ronnie Scotts, how do you feel about bringing the jazz club vibe to Blackheath Halls?Well we always try to bring the

same vibe to wherever we are playing. All we want is for people to forget their troubles and worries when they walk through the door, for a few hours. This is the band's 25th Anniversary, what would you say is your most memorable moment of your time together?Wow, that’s a tough one because there have been so many lovely gigs during our time together, every one is special. If you could name a seat in our venue after any of your jazz heroes, who would you name it after and why?I’d name it for the saxophonist Coleman Hawkins. He bought the sax to legitimate popularity with his sound and genius improvisations.

We try to bring the same vibe to wherever we are playing so people can forget their troubles and worries when they walk through the door for a few hours.

Throughout Blackheath Halls’ long history, many important names in classical music have graced our stage. To celebrate our venue emerging from its extensive refurbishment in Autumn 2018, we are collaborating with international tenor Nicky Spence to present a series of recitals inviting musical personalities both known and emerging to perform in this important first full year of reopening.

A new Blackheath Halls recital series

Programmed by artists to showcase both established and emerging talent

Working together with Nicky we have a

strong vision to provide a platform for world-class chamber music

in South East London. As part

of Blackheath Presents, we will bring together masters in the field of artsong such as Roger Vignoles and Malcolm

Martineau alongside exciting young artists such as James Newby, Iúnó Connolly and Dylan Perez. In addition to this, we have invited pianist Jocelyn Freeman to present several concerts under the theme of From Russia with Love exploring the cultural and political links between the former Soviet Union and Europe.

There will also be a selection of lunchtime recitals on Mondays presented by The Friends of Blackheath Halls.

It’s an exciting prospect to have

a chamber music recital series reflecting the new state of the art surroundings and legacy as one of London’s most cherished recital venues. Nicky Spence

Multi award winning Scottish singer Emily Smith and New Zealand born songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jamie McClennan have been making music together for over fifteen years. Having spent much of 2016 off the road the couple took time to focus on writing new material. The fruits of their labour are two albums, the first of which Unplugged was released in April 2018. The duo’s new sound reworks traditional material from their homelands of Scotland and New Zealand as well as drawing on influences from the folk tradition, Americana and beyond.

WED 3 APR 8pmRecital RoomTICKETS: £10 including a glass of wineRunning Time: approx. 60 mins no interval

In a long and illustrious career Edward Bawden (1903-89) achieved renown as a painter, designer, illustrator and teacher, yet he remains an elusive figure. Today he is remembered for his spectacular linocuts and humorous illustrations, yet he was once feted as an innovative modern painter. As curator of last summer's Bawden exhibition at Dulwich Picture Gallery, James Russell draws on in-depth research, archive material and more to share with us the story of this artist and adventurer.
