Year Five Teacher – Miss Clilverd Teaching Assistant – Mrs Riordan Important dates: 21 st February – Tropical World trip. 22 nd February – Mass at 9.15am 20 th -22 nd March- Robinwood. March – Show and share (please ensure you have handed in your slip to join us for this) Important Days PE Every Thursday – indoor PE kit. Every Thursday – outdoor PE kit including trainers, jogging bottoms and a hoodie are essential. Mathematics In maths this half term, we will begin by using fractions for addition and subtraction. This will involve using fractions that have different denominators that are multiples of the same number (e.g. ¼ + 3/12). We will then move onto comparing fractions too. After fractions, we will move onto area and perimeter of shapes and then composite shapes. Finally, we will work on estimating and measuring angles as well as drawing angles accurately using a protractor. Using a protractor is not easy work so if you do have one at home, please work on this with the children. Our KIRF focus this half term is fraction, decimal and percentage equivalents. Last half term, year 5 worked really hard on fraction and decimal equivalences. We used the concept of money to gain a better understanding of tenth and hundredth. Please continue to work on this at home as it is important for children to have quick recall of these facts. If you need any help with games you could play please let me know and I will give you some ideas. Science In science, we will be starting our topic of forces. The children will learn about pushes and pulls, friction and then water and air resistance. This topic is strongly linked to an exciting project we are taking part in which is run by Jaguar. The children will be designing their cars, testing them and adjusting their design thinking about their understanding of forces to make their design better. If there is one thing I can guarantee this half term is that Year 5 will be thrilled with this topic! RE Year 5 will learn about the concept of sin and that when we sin we hurt ourselves and others and damage our relationship with God. They will begin to understand that God loves and forgives us if we are truly sorry and learn that God heals our friendship with Him and others through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. They learn how we can prepare ourselves to receive this Sacrament and learn what happens during the Sacrament of Reconciliation. English During this half term there will be a strong focus on punctuation. We will continue to work on the apostrophes (possessive and plural), speech mark use, commas and capital letters. Please encourage your child to work on this at home- if they bring work in I will give them lots of house points for their efforts! If your child is unsure of what punctuation they should work on, please ask and I will be able to guide you. For reading this half term, we will be begin a book called ‘There’s a boy in the girls’ bathroom’ by Louis Sachar. We will be using this as a stimulus for writing and we will be writing in role for both letters and diaries from the main character Bradley. We will be learning about modal verbs and begin to use these to write in role when learning about speech punctuation. Further to this, we will be developing our understanding of relative pronouns in order to extend sentences. Topic We will be learning all about the rainforest this half term. We will begin by using an atlas to locate the rainforests across the globe and use our developing geographical vocabulary in order to describe their location. We will also be looking at what the rainforest is and how to define a rainforest e.g. precipitation. After this, we will be comparing areas of the Amazon rainforest to the UK and then look at how the Amazon is changing over time and the effects of this. For art, we will focusing on perspective. Spring Term 2 2017 Ways to Help Support at home is always invaluable! Please continue to support your child with their learning at home. Please also continue to let me know if you would like any additional activities to work on at home.
