“This intelligent mystery is a complete 180 from the au-thor’s leprosy-in-India tale, No Ordinary Day (2011), but is similar in how its impact sneaks up on you…The unreli-ability of Jess’ first-person account becomes increasingly obvious as we learn the depths of Jess’ jealousy and the dubiousness of her morals. The mystery here is not just a whodunit but how loyalty and betrayal can rest along such a razor’s edge.”—Booklist

“…Ellis’s masterful novel makes every word count, thus highlighting Jess as a deeply conflicted, not totally reliable, narrator who is so afraid of losing the only part of her life that she values—Casey—that she doesn’t realize how much her actions have cost her. A compelling and moving read, True Blue is about the courage to believe in oneself and fight for what’s right, even when it is the hardest thing to do. A book worthy of any school curriculum.”—School Library Journal

“Jess… grabs readers’ attention and never lets it go.” —Kirkus Reviews

“Deborah Ellis has again delved into the psychological depths of youth and produced a story that will force read-ers to look inside themselves and ask—really consider—what they would do in Jess’s situation.” —Resource Links

“The best art gives a voice to the voiceless parts of our lives, and Small Things does so with heartfelt precision.”—Shaun TanIn this wordless graphic picture book, a young boy feels alone with his worries. He isn’t fitting in well at school. His grades are slipping. He’s even lashing out at those who love him.

In talented Australian artist Mel Tregonning’s emotionally rich illustrations, the boy’s anxiety manifests as tiny beings that crowd around him constantly, overwhelming him and gnawing away at his very self. The striking imagery is all the more powerful when, overcoming his isolation at last, the

boy discovers that the tiny demons of worry surround everyone, even those who seem to have it all together

This hard-hitting wordless graphic picture book gets to the heart of childhood anxiety and opens the way for dialogue about acceptance, vulnerability, and the universal experience of worry.

Mel Tregonning Afterword by Barbara Coloroso

A stunning graphic picture book about childhood anxiety from an extraordinarily talented illustrator. On the cusp of having everything slip from his grasp, a young boy has to find a way to rebuild his sense of self.

Mel Tregonning was born in Perth, Western Australia, in 1983. A published cartoonist since primary school, at age 16 she began a long-running comic strip in a national magazine. Over the decades, Mel’s illustration style grew to encompass surrealism, cyberpunk, Art Nouveau, manga, commercial art, and photorealism. She was an in-house illustrator for RIC Publications, and her first short story, “Night”, was published by Gestalt in 2009. Sadly, Mel passed away in 2014. She is survived by her sister, brother, mother and father—and an incredible body of work.

With consultation by Shaun Tan, author-illustrator of The Arrival

Shaun Tan is the Australian artist and writer of over a dozen books for children, including The Arrival, recipient of the 2008 Boston Globe-Horn Book Award Special Citation. In 2016, Tan was asked to work as a consultant on Small Things, the unfinished work of Mel Tregonning. Tan ensured that Tregonning’s vision reached publication as she had imagined it by emulating her technique and finishing the detailed rough sketches Tregonning had created for the missing pages.

Dean GriffithsRich language, varied text features, and a dramatic camping adventure combine in this early-reader friendship story

Timo the rabbit has always been able to count on his friends for support when he’s feeling anxious. But what happens when the anxiety is caused by one of his friends? Award-winning author Victoria Allenby and award-win-ning illustrator Dean Griffiths, creators of Timo’s Garden and Timo’s Party, return to Toadstool Corners to find out in a new, beautifully illustrated early chapter book replete with rich, musical language and multiple text features, in-cluding a map.

When Suki invites her friends on a camping trip, Timo is wary. None of them has ever gone camping before. But a little research at the Toadstool Corners library makes him feel better—until the first accident happens. Bogs trips on the dock, and Suki laughs. Hedgewick capsizes a canoe, and Suki teases. Now Timo dreads being the next one to make a mistake. Can he get through the trip without mak-ing a fool of himself? And even if he does, will his friend-ship with Suki ever be the same?

Strange things happen around Petronilla Gillis. Interna-tional crises, for example.

One day when Mrs. Gillis is giving her daughter a bath, Petronilla cries, “Wash on!” “Wash off, dear,” Mrs. Gillis corrects her. But Petronilla’s words seem to have power. The blue of the washcloth has stained the girl’s cheek. And that is only the beginning. Colours start transferring be-tween every object Petronilla touches. And every person. And every person who touches an object that has been

touched. Before long, the entire world is a spreading mess of colours, and only Petronilla can stop it. But will she?

Translated from Barbouillette by Michèle Marineau, Wash On! is a gleeful adventure with an appealingly mischievous heroine. Manon Gauthier’s mixed-media illustrations are both innovative and charming, inviting young readers into a world where the words of a child have the power to change everything.

From the author-illustrator of New York Times featured book My Beautiful Birds

Juno and her boy live in a red house at the top of the world. One day Juno will be big and strong enough to help pull a sled across the tundra, but for now she is just a small puppy with a big-dog heart. Small puppies have to go to bed when their boys do, but Juno can’t sleep with the midnight sun shining out across the town. She slips outside to play. Returning to see a hungry polar bear sniff-ing around the open door, Juno has no time to be afraid. It’s time to summon the big dog inside her and save her beloved boy.

With Deborah Kerbel’s warm, expressive text, Sun Dog is a love letter to life in the Arctic Circle from the perspec-tive of a sled dog pup. Suzanne Del Rizzo’s dimensional art in polymer clay and acrylic wash offers both an intimate romp with a young puppy and a sweeping celebration of the vast and beautiful tundra.

He’s a rescue, a mutt. Maybe there’s a little golden re-triever in him, although he’s not exactly pretty. He’s had a run-in with coyotes and he’s missing an eye. But Mike is eleven-year-old Caera Donovan’s dog, and they love each other absolutely. Usually her pet follows Caera ev-erywhere, but on the day the family first smells smoke in the air, Mike becomes anxious. Pine Grove is in the path of a wildfire, and the family is ordered to evacuate. In the ensuing chaos, Mike runs off. And then the unthinkable happens; there is no time to search for Mike. They are forced to leave him behind.

Shocked and devastated, Caera watches helplessly as the family drives through a nightmare, with burning debris fall-ing from the sky and wild animals fleeing for their lives.

Once in the city far from the burn zone, the Donovans are housed with a volunteer host family. Jewel, the hosts’ daughter, is nice, but Caera can only think about what she may have lost. What will happen if nothing is left? But as she reflects on what “home” means to her, Caera knows only one thing. She is not going to lose Mike. She will do what it takes to find him, even if it means going back to Pine Grove on her own.

With her signature style combining simplicity and lyricism, the author of Root Beer Candy and Other Miracles and Macy McMillan and the Rainbow Goddess tells an uplifting story of love and loss. And she shows how one girl’s stressful journey eventually leads her to an unexpected place, and a new definition of home.

Shari lives in Campbell River, British Columbia, with her husband, kids, and the worst watchdog ever. She is the author of the middle-grade novels Root Beer Candy and Other Miracles and Macy McMillan and the Rainbow Goddess, which was a 2017 Junior Library Guild selection and has been nominated for the 2018 Forest of Read-ing Silver Birch Fiction Award and the 2017 Cybils Award.

Princess Pistachio and Maurice the MagnificentMarie-Louise Gay

“Irrepressible Princess Pistachio is back in all her en-thusiastic glory….Gay’s easy, breezy syntax is wonder-fully descriptive even as it skillfully addresses life les-sons about friendship, self-involvement, and forgiveness. Breathless, laugh-out-loud fun.”—Kirkus Starred Review

“The child appeal of this tale will keep independent readers chuckling and wanting more; a strongly recom-mended purchase.” —School Library Journal

“Gay’s charming pen, ink, and watercolour drawings are scattered throughout the text, and include especially adorable drawings of all kinds of dogs.”—Montreal Re-view of Books

“The Bronze Age setting makes for a unique backdrop, and Aissa is a sympathetic character….Hand-sell this unusual tale to fans of Shannon Hale’s historical fanta-sies.”—School Library Journal

“Orr (Nim’s Island, 2008) tells Aissa’s tale in a lyrical mix of narrative poetry and prose, using lush, vivid language to create an unparalleled fantasy world full of life and lively characters.”—Booklist

A gripping fantasy from Nim’s Island author Wendy Orr

Illustrated Junior Novel Ages 7–10ISBN: 978-1-77278-022-2List Price: $17.95 Hardcover with dust jacket

“Slug Days wisely presents autism as neither disability nor ex-ceptionalism. It’s a fact that Lauren lives with; it shapes her en-counters without necessarily limiting them. . . .This winsome, gentle introduction to differences will be a positive addition to school and home libraries.”—Foreword Reviews

“A necessary addition to elementary school libraries and a potential spark for a discussion about autism, Asperger’s, or simply embracing differences.”—School Library Journal

“Lauren’s narrative voice is honest, poignant, and spot-on in describing her often baffled perceptions…Bender’s…tender, winsome depictions of Lauren, sometimes endearingly en-gaged but other times steamy with anger, broaden the tale and make it accessible to even children transitioning to chapter books. This nondidactic effort is a fine, affecting addition to the literature for kids on the spectrum and for those who know those kids—in short, for just about everyone.”—Kirkus Reviews

“The first-person narration lets readers understand Lauren’s motivations and reasoning in a way that others in her life often do not….Leach’s empathetic novel should both open eyes and encourage greater patience and understanding.” —Publishers Weekly

“The rhyming text flows smoothly and has a jaunty rhythm that lends itself well to reading aloud. The playful watercolors start off saturated with bright colors that become muted as the child’s day comes to a sleepy end. A sweet read-aloud featuring a fearless and athletic girl to share with funny little monkeys.”—Kirkus Reviews

Best PirateKari-Lynn WintersIllustrated by Dean Griffiths

Juvenile Nonfiction Ages 5–8ISBN: 978-1-77278-019-2Printed Ends / Reinforced Trade BindingList Price: $19.95 Hardcover with dust jacket

“ Augusta is proactive, takes charge, and even has a thing or two to say about generosity when the moment is right. Griffiths’ illustrations are in fine form here, by turns beautiful in their evocative backgrounds while also dis-playing an array of impressively expressive kits and pups. Best be filling yer ditty bag with more of this sort—Tuna Lubbers and Frilly Dogs ahoy!”—Kirkus Reviews

“The illustrations are fabulous, full of color, realistic, ex-pressive—and cute….This would be a fun addition to a pirate-themed storytime.”—Youth Services Book Reviews

The Theory of HummingbirdsMichelle Kadarusman

Juvenile Fiction Ages 8–12ISBN: 978-1-77278-027-7 HC /978-1-77278-035-2 PBList Price: $17.95 Hardcover with dust jacket / $11.95 Paperback with French flaps

“Kadarusman’s writing has a light touch, and the story will resonate with a wide audience. Readers learn that a group of hummingbirds is called a ‘charm’—and are sure to be charmed by this heartfelt tale.”—School Library Journal

“[Alba’s] goals occur in small steps, easing her into the difference between her dream and the reality without di-minishing her accomplishments. Alba’s relationship with her single mother is touching…Alba’s narration is dotted with hummingbird facts, which Kadarusman—who had a club foot herself—explains in a glossary. A quick, sweet read.”—Kirkus Reviews

“In the mode of Jeanne Birdsall and Natalie Lloyd, Kadarus-man makes some narrative choices that favour poeticism and poignancy over realism....The negativity is fleeting and the trajectory of Alba’s journey is onward and upward.” —Quill & Quire

“[A] rich and thought-provoking read…. The total design of the book, including its various fonts and hummingbird images, is captivating….Highly Recommended.” —CM Magazine
