Video students from the Waynesville Career Center had an opportunity to put their college and career-readiness skills to the test today when they filmed during Fireball Run’s America’s Frontier trivia race. Five WCC students operated video cameras at multiple Pulaski County locations as the Fireball Run teams competed in the eight-day, 2,000-mile trivia game that is aired online to more than 2 million viewers. WCC video students film Fireball Runrequires schools to prepare students for their next step in the “real world” and the event provided a test of their skills. Despite the pressure of filming live, WCC Video Instructor Tim Wallace believed the students were up for the challenge. “This is an excellent opportunity for us to showcase our students’ talent,” Wallace says. “Our students broadcast sporting events live, school board meetings live and city council meetings live, so they know what it takes to produce good video footage on the fly.” If the student’s video is used on the show that is scheduled to air in 2015,

the student will receive professional credit for their work on IMDb.com. “To have that credit to their name at this early in their career will open many doors for them,” Wallace says. Forty driving teams, many with stars like WWE alumnus Raven, astronaut Jon McBride, and Daytona 500 Winner Geoff Bodine, are competing. Team 10 – Pulaski Pride – is made up of Rep. Steve Lynch and Cecilia Murray, Waynesville-St. Robert Chamber of Commerce executive director.

WCC video students shot footage for Fireball Run on Thursday and Friday. Rick Morris, Dr. Brian Henry and Jim Phillips check out the Rolls-Royce – one of the many luxury and unique vehicles – that rolled into Waynesville for Fireball Run.

The Waynesville boys soccer team won the championship game in the brown division of the Kickapoo tournament, against a familiar opponent – Carthage. “We found the net twice and controlled most of the half,” says Coach Mike Armstrong. “In the second half, we dealt with injuries and fatigue from the 5th game of the week. With 20 minutes left in the game, we switched into defensive mode, ensuring numbers stayed behind the ball. “Carthage controlled possession and threatened several times, but couldn’t break through as the defense did enough to preserve the shutout,” Armstrong says. This is only the second time the Tigers have won their division and the first time to have gone undefeated. The Waynesville Volleyball team won the Rolla Invitational on Sept. 27. In the championship, Kallie Bildner led with 11 kills, Ariel Okorie added 8. Kaylee Brewer had 23 assists. On Thursday, Waynesville volleyball defeated Parkview 25-7, 25-10. Kallie Bildner (left) led with 11 kills. Savannah York (right) had 4 kills and 4 aces.

To promote the love of reading, Thayer Elementary held a Wild West Night for kindergarten and first grade boys on Sept.18. The boys read stories about cowboys, learned about the lariat and life on the trail, played games and decorated hats. The evening culminated with campfire songs and trail mix.

Students will be dismissed early on Friday, Oct. 10, and will be off all day on Monday, Oct. 13, which is a teacher in-service day.

Freedom ELL students from Mrs. Taylor’s class enjoyed Muffins with Moms on Sept. 26. ELL students invited their mothers to join them for muffins and juice, while they read their mothers a quick-read AR book. When students finished reading, they took an AR test to show their mothers how the program works. It was a great start to a Friday morning. Taylor plans on having Donuts with Dads next month.
