This Week’s Meeting…at The Ori
Bronwyn Berriman – Rotary New
Generations and Youth Programs
Introduction: Cheryl Kitto
Thanks: Fred Thompson
enlightening us on the details of the Youth
programmes that Rotary has to offer. For the
newer members, and those who have
not much knowledge of these programmes,
usually referred to by their acronyms, a much
better insight you will have at the conclusion.
I have commenced the introduction of the
recommended & approved changes to our
meeting procedures and would invite any of
you who may wish to discuss any of the
aspects with me to do so rather than be
unhappy and complain in groups. I believe we
have a very cohesive, & by far the friendliest,
Club and with team work, we can only grow
and serve our community even more.
To our ailing members, yes there are still a
few, we wish you a speedy recovery and offer
our assistance should you require it.
Regards,
Norm Kitto
President 2017/18
President’s Report I trust everyone had an enjoyable long
weekend and that you were able to catch
up with family & friends.
That is of course those who were able to
man our “bonus” Bunnings on Monday. A
pleasant and successful day was had.
Warwick will fill you in on the results.
Thanks to our Garden Gnomes that were
able to turn up to the working bee at
Lynda’s on Thursday. We feel we
produced a good result that Lynda was
happy to find on her return. This type of
activity is surely what “Rotary Family” is
all about.
Tonight we look forward to Bronwyn

Club News – Meeting this week – Ori Café!
Apologies are to be phoned to Bill Clague preferably by text message (SMS) on 0400 802 448, or email -
[email protected] or on 4751 1089 by 5PM on Sunday. Leave your name with any message, particularly the SMS
messages on your phone. Members will be billed if deadline not complied with – as the club has to pay for any extra meals!
Really Important! If you have ordered a ticket(s) to the Every Brothers & Buddy Holly Concert, you need to pay the
Club ASAP. The tickets were $60 each, and this promises to be a real hoot of a night. If you still need to pay for your
T Shirt ($15) and the bus trip, Cheryl will eagerly relieve you of the cash.
Pride of Workmanship coming up on 6th November – make sure nominations are in – Carol Brandt is managing this
fantastic event! So far, we have 4 nominees. There are lots of people out there whose efforts we should reward.
Annual General Meeting – This will be held on Monday, 20th November. The deadline for resolutions for the agenda
is now 31st October, and for Board nominations is 15th November.
Don’t forget the End Plio Now walk on Sunday 22nd
October. If you havn’t purchased your shirt yet ($15), see Geoff
Glassock ASAP.
The Photos Page reflects a couple of events that happened this week. The first was a presentation to Dawn Harris. The
second was a call from Valda for help with Lynda’a Nursery. Lynda has been battling lately with the health of Peter,
the health of her father, her own health issues, and the business on top of it. Valda Bray sent out the “call to arms”
which was responded to by David Rayner, Norm Kitto, Bob and Jan Templeman, Robin Ingram, Sheril Daly, Alan
Cameron, Fred Thompson, Colin Kenney and Valda, and all worked until the job was done (see photos), and all
muscles were sore and aching. Lynda Sparkes was over the moon when she saw it the first time on Friday.

Polio Update Whilst the news of a further WPV case
during the week is disappointing, it must
be remembered we are now in peak
season for the virus in the endemic
countries (Nigeria, Pakistan and
Afghanistan). The total of 11 WPV (6 in
Afghanistan, 5 in Pakistan) cases for the
year to date reflects the controlled and improving situation
when we note a total of 25 for the same period last
year. Nigeria has been clear for 12 months now.
RI President Ian Riseley has maintained very simple fund
raising goals this year and is appreciated of your support –
DDF money is to be spent, not saved, and a
donation of 20% of unused funds is recommended.
Every Rotary Club to be encouraged to make a
special ‘one off’ donation of US$1,500 to END
POLIO NOW to gain maximum advantage from
Gates Foundation support.
Every District to continue the search for TRF
Major Donors of US$10,000.
All clubs be requested to plan a special promotion
to mark World Polio Day on October 24.
Again, thank you for all you are doing and best wishes for
another outstanding year of Rotary service.

Two trips to Cambodia…
Walk to End Polio, Sunday 22nd
October, 2017
On World Polio Day this year (Oct 24) we are looking to create some major publicity for Rotary by
having a massive walk along Tench Reserve on Sunday 22 October to highlight the message of End
Polio Now. The installation of a plaque to commemorate the event is also planned.
Here is the proposal put to RIP Ian Riseley --
Our plan is to involve members of our club, along with Rotarians from clubs on both sides of the
River, in a World Polio Day walk along the River – all wearing the bright red END POLIO NOW
t-shirts. The plan is for the walk to finish in the park area adjacent to where the Nepean Belle Paddle
steamer is moored – which you will recall from that pleasant Sunday night cruise after the Penrith
Institute. Rotary will provide a community barbecue and we would like to unveil a commemorative
END POLIO NOW plaque carrying your name as RI President.
Suggested words on the plaque …
THIS PLAQUE IS DEDICATED TO ROTARY INTERNATIONAL’S POLIO
ERADICATION PROGRAM and the thousands of Rotary volunteers who
have supported the cause since 1985
WORLD POLIO DAY – October 24, 2017.

Penrith Valley and Springwood, NSW.
Dawn Harris, wife of the late PP Joe Harris, has moved
closer to her family after living near Lynda’s Nursery for
a great number of years. On the passing of Joe, our Club
presented Dawn with a rose called “Just Joey”. As this
was planted, Dawn was presented with another “Just
Joey” Rose to take with her, once again demonstrating
“the family of Rotary” approach taken by our Club.
Many thanks to Lynda Sparkes,
Valda Bray and Colin Kenney for
organising this presentation.
