Contents especially in areas where the choiceof implementing optical fibres couldbe too expensive and time consuming

and infrastructure space is at a

premium.Integrated in a wide range of

    Siemens Mobile products, SRA 4

    is designed to provide capacities

    from single to multiple 155Mb/s

data channels, up to a total transport

    capability of 622 Mb/s interfacing

    SONET (OC-3/ OC-12), SDH (STM-1 /

    2xSTM-1/STM-4) and add/drop up to

    42xE1 tributary interfaces performing

    multiplexing, line protection and

    cross connection.

    The continued growth of cellular

    subscribers worldwide is driving

    the cellular backhaul market for

    microwave radios and is pushing

SDH further out towards the regional

    transport layer of large networks,

    down to the access layer.

    Furthermore the increase in voice

    traffic, combined with the newly

    emerging cellular data market,

    increases customer requirements

    for spectrum efficiency and

equipment flexibility as well SRA 4,

the new Siemens SDH split radio

    system meets these needs,

    addressing new capacity demands

of telecommunication network overshort to medium distances,

    Mobile networks

    The UMTS transport network requires

the use of packet-based data transport

technologies such as IP and ATM as

well as the traditional SONET/SDH for

connecting the RNC core and UTRAN

    network.

SRA 4, having full compatibility with all

    these technologies and high system

    scalability, represents the ideal choice,

    ensuring cost-effective ultrahigh

    capacity applications for all typical

mobile networks such as rings, mesh

    or star topologies.

The full RF frequency coverage (6-38

GHz) and the multiple modulation typeover the same hardware platform make

SRA 4 a single solution for each mobile

    operator who needs high performances

and high spectrum efficiency, with at

the same time just one platform for

    deploying the entire IP/ATM/SDH

    wireless network.

Unlike the fibre alternative, SRA 4

    point-to-point solution is cost effective,

flexible and quick to deploy up to STM-

4 capacity, minimising the risk of

    interoperability issues because it fits

    with all worldwide microwave

    standards.

    Fixed / Access networks

SRA 4 is otherwise the ideal choice for

building fixed or access networks with

a total wireless approach or also,

    thanks to its different baseband

    interfaces, with an easy combination

    with any existing cable systems.

With its simple split-mount solutionbringing up to STM-4 capacity, it

    represents a cheap, easy-to-deploy

and highly reliable point to point

    transmission system.

    The particular system concept

    privileges two fundamental issues for

    any operator: flexibility and scalability.

SRA 4 can be set up for a gradual

    deployment since, as the penetration

rate raises up, the transported capacity

    can be increased remotely and

    completely via software.

SRA 4 provides dedicated high capacity

    wireless connections for every access

    operator type: from large enterprises

    and multi-dwelling businesses to

    residential property, supporting also

    high-speed Internet access and

integrated data, as well as video and

    voice services.

    Wired and wireless networks.

Due to the hastening demand for more

    flexible and more advanced services

    from business and residential customer

groups alike and to the growing

volume in data traffic packets in

    Applications

addition to traditional ones, PDH and

ATM signals have to be transported

    over the SDH network.Plesiochronous

and lower bit rate syncronous signal

can be extracted from or inserted into

high speed SDH bit streams by means

of ADM embedded into the SRA4 radio.

By deploying SRA4 ADM Built in and

moving intelligence to the edge of the

    backhaul network,service providers can

reduce or eliminate costly leased T1/E1

lines, consolidate traffic onto a fewer

    number of mobile switch interfaces.

    and free up stranded bandwidth.

The SRA 4 design allows an easy and

accurate change of capacity. Based onplug and play concept, SRA4

equipment can be used either as a SDH

(from STM1/STM2 up to STM4) radio in

access network or into wired and

    wireless networks, aggregating lower

rate traffic for a more efficient

    provisioning.

SRA 4 is a product combining high

    capacity and high bandwidth efficiency

into a single radio platform. Capacity

can be doubled as well as bandwidth

can be optimised with simple SW

operations and above all without any

    HW change.

The Indoor Unit system, 88 mm high, is

    composed of a few slide-units:

Controller Unit, Alarm Unit, Fan Unit andtwo BB-Modems. This modularity

    ensures customers a basic characteristic

wireless systems: a high level of

    scalability. The other fundamental

    operator requirement, flexibility, is

ensured by the possibility to double the

capacity from STM-1 to 2xSTM-1 (single-

    carrier) without any HW intervention,

    neither indoor nor, especially, outdoor.

    The equipment supports rapid network

capacity growth and new revenuesproducing services by simply adding

    additional interface modules.

    Frequency efficiency

With the benefit of a modulation format

    completely software selectable from 32

TCM to 128 TCM, in fact, the equipment

can offer a high spectrum efficiency by

optaining the same capacity within half

    band (STM-1 in 27.5/28 MHz/2x STM-1

in 55/56 MHz) with a considerable

saving of spectrum in a given

geographical area as well as cost saving

in licence fees. Moreover the frequency

    efficiency allocation can be doubled

    using dual polarization co-channel

transmission achieved with a fully digital

    cross polarization interference canceller

    (XPIC).

    Capacity upgrading

Increasing capacity of the existing links

    requires additional transmission

    bandwidth available and adequate

system gain to maintain the overall

network quality. SRA4 is able to

    guarantee all these features.

Its capacity is easily software upgradeable.

Using a single hardware, in fact,

SRA 4 can immediately ensure up to

4xSTM-1 active bearers giving the samespectral efficiency of a single STM-1/OC-3.

The right system for any ring network

The same HW can be configured in a

ring as 2x(1+0) giving the possibility to

make the Est-West direction in a ring,

using a single IDU and two ODU (one

    per each side).

    With no additional hardware

    components, capacity can successively

be doubled (from 1 to 2xSTM-1 (single-

carrier) as shown in the figure below)

through the variation of the modulation

level (from 32 to 128 TCM) completely

    selectable via software.

    N+1 configuration

    Equipment configuration is designed

to be scalable from to1+1 up to N+1.

The system can be expanded to a multi-channel N+1 (N

    The outdoor unit, besides RF

    reception and transmission, carries

out signal conversion for sending it

to the indoor unit through a coaxial

cable. The outdoor unit houses one

RF transceiver per case. The outdoor

unit case, once in field, does not need

to be open requiring only very simple

    and easy operations either during

    installation or maintenance and test

    phases.

    Broadest frequency

    coverage

    The wide RF frequency coverage

(from 6 up to 38 GHz) gives theoperator the possibility to find the

    right solution for every local

    application inside the network.

    High order modulation

    and advanced error

    correction

    128 TCM modulation scheme with

    Reed Solomon error correction,

    supporting STM-1/ 2xSTM-1 payload

transmission in 28/56 MHz, optimizesbandwidth occupancy. The major

benefit of this modulation format is

    a strongly enhanced error correction

    capability and bit error rate

    performance, if compared with

    conventional QAM systems.

    Automatic Transmitter Power

    Control (ATPC) and Remote

    Transmit Power Control (RTPC)

    Continuous ATPC or RTPC (SW

selectable) up to 15 dB range (1 dB

    stepped).

    Frequency Agility

    Frequency channel can be adjusted

    completely via SW (LinkViewer LCT/

NetViewer NMS) as a wide tuning

    range gives the radio maximum

    flexibility.

    Cross Polar Operation

    (Option)

    Dual polarization co-channel

    transmission can be achieved with

    a fully digital cross polarization

    interference canceller (XPIC).

    The Cross-Polarization Interference

    Canceller (XPIC) guarantees proper

    reduction of cross-polarization

    interferences also during non-nominal

    propagation conditions and allows

    frequency use on both polarizations,

    doubling transmission capacity.

    SNCP traffic protection

Moreover the SRA4 ADM can offer

to the service provider a versatile

protection scheme including SNCPfor both ring and linear Network

    topology.
