Walkers in Woodend and Sunbury will pay tribute, raise awareness and help fight mental health stigma and suicide on September 14.
Out of the Shadows is the name of a campaign to shine a light on mental health issues and the impact of suicide.
Walks will be held in Woodend, Sunbury and around Australia as Lifeline marks World Suicide Prevention Day (September 10).
The Woodend walk is being organised by Woodend Neighbourhood House and the Macedon Ranges Suicide Prevention Action Group, which was formed in June to better support people at risk of suicide.
Acting chairwoman Noelene Ward said suicide was the leading cause of death in Australia for people aged 15-44. She said Australian Bureau of Statistics data showed suicide rates for the Macedon Ranges were trending upwards, in contrast to state and national trends.
As a united community, we remember those we have lost; we provide hope for recovery for those who are living with mental illness and we raise awareness of mental health issues as part of a prevention strategy, Ms Ward said.
By shining a light on these issues we reduce stigma, increase mental health literacy and encourage help-seeking behaviour.
The event will include readings of hope and a chance for people who have lost someone to suicide to have their loved one acknowledged.
The four-kilometre walk in Woodend starts at Woodend Childrens Park at 9am on September 14. The Sunbury walkers will leave Galaxy Land Playground at 10am the same day. To register, visit www.outoftheshadows.org.au.

A new system that will fast-track planning permit applications to Macedon Ranges council will be introduced this month.
Under the new system, from September 19 waiting times for home renovators and small businesses will be slashed from 40 days to 10, giving councils powers to fast-track permit processes for low-impact housing additions and simple land subdivisions.
VicSmart applications are not advertised to the public and can entail realigning land boundaries, minor subdivisions, building front fences, sign displays, car space changes and minor building works up to $50,000 in business and industrial areas.
Councils director of planning and environment, Sophie Segafredo, said the new system would result in faster processing of straightforward applications.
Ms Segafredo said about 20 per cent of planning applications would come under the new VicSmart planning system over 12 months, averaging about 120 applications.
She said not all permit types would be eligible for the VicSmart process, and she encouraged people to meet the councils planner to discuss applications, including those with heritage overlays.
The introduction of VicSmart was announced by the state government in June. Details: dtpli.vic.gov.au/vicsmart

If ever a house and grounds could legitimately claim to be the epitome of the peace and comfort of a rural lifestyle, it could easily be this one.
Far from the hustle and bustle of the city, this impressive five-bedroom house sprawling over about 2023 square metres has a brick facade sporting white fretwork, the immediate sense of quality enhanced by landscaped gardens and emerald lawns.
Fretwork continues in the foyer where theres a smaller living room to the left and spacious study to the right. Polished floorboards flow into the main living zone with the designer kitchen at its heart fitted with white timber cabinetry, stone benchtops and stainless-steel dishwasher,
900mm cooker and rangehood. The kitchen adjoins an expansive
family-meals area which has a slider to a large, covered outdoor entertainment area.
Double doors from the family room open to a separate theatre and games room, great for movie nights with the kids or to keep teens and their mates entertained.
Three bedrooms, each with walk-in wardrobe, are also up this end of the house. At the opposite end (to the right of entry) are two more bedrooms with walk-in wardrobes, including the main which also has a luxurious en suite to rival those in many hotels: a long bathtub (with headrest) against a mirrored dividing wall; twin basins in a marble-topped vanity unit; and toilet
discreetly tucked behind a wall. Manicured lawn on either side of the pergola and bordering gardens make for gorgeous surrounds when hosting friends and family for barbecues and cool drinks on lazy summer evenings.
Concrete stairs head up from this area to a spacious terraced backyard with plenty of scope to install a cubby house or playground for a young family.
Additional features include ducted heating and twin evaporative coolers, broadband internet, horseshoe driveway and detached remote-controlled double garage.

An auction can happen very fast so its really important you and your agent are clear and agreed on the
process for your auction day. Things like your reserve price and whether you will be making vendor bids
through your agent are critical and have legal implications. As the auctioneer begins he/she will make an
announcement detailing the information your state laws require, and they may vary from state to state,
including whether vendor bids will be used. The auctioneer will suggest an opening bid and increments.
Any amount can be bid, however it is up to the auctioneers discretion if the amount is accepted. Once
the reserve price is reached the property is on the market and will be sold to the highest bidder. If
the reserve price isnt reached the seller may agree to sell at a lower price. Once the property is on the
market, which will be announced by the auctioneer, it will be sold to the highest bidder.
A deposit usually 10% - is required after the auction. The balance is paid on settlement, normally set
by the seller at 30, 60 or 90 days. Flexibility with the length of settlement may help sell the property. The
sale is formalised when the contract has been signed by both seller and buyer and all relevant deposit
monies have been made. Completion of the sale is now in the hands of your conveyancing professional.

Our goal is to ensure that our property services provide the best possibleexperience for our customers.Real estate is not just about selling houses, butabout helping real people find homes rather than just bricks andmortar. Our intention is to deliver on the First national promise We put you first
THINKING OF DITCHINGTHE RENTAL?Being a tenant is a reality for most Australians at some point or another in their lives. However, the timeoften comes when you wonder whether home ownership is a better option. Sure, youll need to takeresponsibility for regular maintenance and repairs, plus youll need to keep on top of your mortgagerepayments. That said, the freedom that comes with owning your own home and building up equity inthis significant asset can be rewarding. Buying a home is not a decision to make lightly, so consider allyour options carefully and be sure to take a careful analysis of your finances. Here are three reasons whyit might be time to ditch the rental. Use the First Home Owner Grant - Australias First Home OwnerGrant scheme helps individuals purchase their first property. Its a financial incentive that helps mitigatethe impact of GST on home ownership, by providing a one-off grant to those who meet the eligibilitycriteria, explains the federal government. Benefit from capital growth - You might adore your currentsuburb, but theres no harm in investigating nearby suburbs if youre thinking about buying.Thats becausecapital growth projections vary from suburb to suburb, city to city and state to state. Create your idealhome -Sure, you can decorate a rental property with furniture, rugs and colourful vases. However, paintingthe walls, renovating the kitchen and sometimes even hanging artwork is a no-no if youre a tenant ratherthan a homeowner.
ADDINGVALUETO MY PROPERTY?Which renovations will give you the biggest returns? After all, unless youre planning on staying in yourcurrent home for the rest of your life, chances are you want any upgrades to pay off down the line whenyou decide to sell.Adding value - Before you take a trip to the hardware store, think about whether yourrenovations are truly adding value to your property.Things like swimming pools and high-end upgradesmay seem like they make your home more valuable, but the truth is they can actually work against you. Forinstance, a pool will narrow the number of buyers interested in your home. Some people view them as atime-suck, too expensive to maintain or just plain dangerous. Meanwhile, upgrades like marble floors andstainless steel appliances are certainly alluring, unless they fit the overall scheme of your home, they couldbe pointless. Stick to the small stuff when trying to improve the value of your home, its typically a betterstrategy to stick with the tried and true upgrades that everyone will appreciate. A new, neutral paint job, updated fixtures and a lush lawn will all add value to your property at a relatively low price. And if you doplan on selling in the future, its these little things that may help put you over the edge.
RIDDELLS CREEKTOY LIBRARY CALLS FOR NEWMEMBERSThings are looking up for the Riddells CreekToy Library since several people came forward to volunteerfor positions on the committee. The toy library put out a call for more volunteers last month as it facedclosing after 25 years of operation.
However, the toy library still needs more members - and why wouldnt anyone want to join? For just $50a year (or $25 for duty members) you can access hundreds of great quality toys and take new toys homeevery fortnight. Being part of a toy library also means no need to store big bulky toys, and less impact onthe environment.
Anyone in Riddells Creek who is interested in joining as a member or volunteering for the committee canfind out more by emailing [email protected] or calling Kylie on 0488 226 681. Or youcan just turn up to the toy librarys Annual General Meeting, being held on September 13, 9.30am, at theRiddells Creek Neighbourhood House. 5 Peterhouse Court, Sunbury

Romsey is one win away from a perfect season after booking a spot in the Riddell District Football League grand final with a strong victory over Riddell on Saturday.
The undefeated Redbacks came out with all guns blazing, booting 13 goals to two and putting the second semi-final at Macedons Tony Clarke Reserve out of reach by half-time.
The Bombers put in an improved showing in the second half, but it was too little too late as the Redbacks won 21.11 (137) to 10.8 (68).
Romsey coach Dean Helmers said his side had planned to hit the scoreboard early.
We always expect Riddell to come out early with lots of pace.
We put it to them early with a physical assault to try and slow them down. If we do that, it gives us extra time to tackle and put pressure on them.
Helmers said the Bombers did too much scoring for his liking in the second half.
We ran out of legs, he said. We lost Shaun Austin in the first minute of the game with an injury [hamstring], so we over-rotated the boys to make sure we could play out the game.
When Stephen Burlak was yellow-carded [after a bump], it meant we were playing with 17 men. We lost our structure and let them get a few goals.
Helmers was full of praise for Phil Lobb, who was best on ground with five goals. He was terrific and marked everything.
Burlak will face the tribunal on Tuesday night. Helmers is confident that Austin will be fit for the grand final in two weeks.

Redbacks strike earlyCricketGisbornes Patrick McKenna has been selected to captain the Australian under-19 cricket team on a tour of Sri Lanka next month. McKenna, who also plays for Gisborne in the Bendigo Football League, is a top-order batsman for Carlton in Victorian Premier Cricket. Fellow Gisborne cricketer Bianca Mackay has been selected in the under-15 Vic Country squad, which will take on a Vic Metro side in October.
Bendigo netballGisborne was too strong for Kyneton in Bendigo Netball Leagues qualifying final. After beating the Tigers, 53-33, the Bulldogs will face off with Kangaroo Flat for a spot in the grand final. Kyneton will play Golden Square for a preliminary final spot.
SoccerSunbury Uniteds season hangs in the balance, with the club one point outside the relegation zone in State League 1 north west. United blew a chance to secure its spot for next season by losing 3-0 to Altona Magic on Saturday. In State League 5 west, Kyneton District lost to Keilor Wolves 4-1. Nik Plant scored for Kyneton. District is fifth on the ladder with two rounds to go.
CorrectionLast weeks Star Weekly said Chris Meacham had been reappointed to coach the Sunbury Lions next season. This was incorrect. Meacham has been reappointed coach of the RDFLs Sunbury Kangaroos.
