Sacrificial Giving and Stewardship
We run a pretty tight ship here at St. Alphonsus and St. Peter.
We rely on minimal staff and volunteers for lots of help. The
Early Learning Center at St. Alphonsus School pays for the
upkeep of the building and numerous upgrades through
grants and fees. At the churches and rectories I have tried to
space out capital improvements over time so that we do not
incur debt from year to year. Despite responsible financial
stewardship, some things still cost money. Since we all look
out our bottom lines this time of year with the tax man, I
would like to give some examples of our current needs:
1. St. Alphonsus pays a fixed subsidy to All Saints Catholic
School and Assumption High School. This subsidy serves to
make Catholic School affordable for our families, reducing the
real tuition cost by about half. St. Peter’s also pays this, but
on a per student basis. Your weekly envelope helps to
support Catholic education for all our families.
2. Your parish is responsible for meeting the Annual Diocesan
Appeal Assessment. The ADA pays for seminarian education,
immigration assistance, the education office, the marriage
tribunal, bishop’s salary, and a host of other services
necessary to keep the Catholic Faith flourishing in our area.
St. Al’s has still not met our goal for the year and I hope that
each parish family will respond to the letter they recently
received from the office of stewardship at the diocese.
3. Each parish is responsible for meeting the Catholic
Messenger subscription drive. Historically this has been a
hard sell for many people, but I can assure you of its
importance. It is the bishop’s will that each parish family
receive the Catholic Messenger since this is his chief
communication tool with the diocese. This publication has
information on recent decrees, priest assignments, parish
news, and diocesan events. It is an important instrument for
preserving our Catholic identity. Each Catholic household
should maintain their subscription from year to year.
4. Money alone does not make us Christian. I expect that
each parishioner, young and old, take it upon themselves to
volunteer in some manner for their parish. There are a host of
opportunities such as serving on a council, cleaning church,
teaching RE, praying the rosary, working the fish fry, and
visiting the home-bound. If you do not have a ministry of your
own it may be time to ask, “why not?”
Living one’s faith in the world should not be easy. It should
be a challenge. Sometimes it can even hurt. The example of
Christ is a willingness to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
If the expression of your faith has become a matter of
convenience, it is time to take a new look at it. My prayer for
all of you is that you will put the gifts that God has given you
to good use in a spirit of sacrificial giving and stewardship for
our future. -Fr. Paul
