    essage from the ectorBack-to-School Sentiments

The Revd Canon Dr. Kevin George

It's hard for us to imagine that Aug is already gone and we're well intothe middle of Sept. As good as it is to enjoy summer vacations, timewith family, and some rest and relaxation, it is always exciting whenSept comes upon us and we all prepare for the busy Fall that liesahead. For us, atSt. Aidans Church, this time of year brings much

excitement as we ramp up for the last few months of the year.

Last week, I had the opportunity to spend a few moments downstairsin the atrium with the children of our parish. You could sense theirexcitement as they all planned for return to school, and the return tothe routines of family life that go along with it.

I suspect for many of us this time of year in the church is very similarto back-to-school for the kids. I hope that most of us express and feel

that same sense of anticipation that our children do this time of year. Sure, there are always one ortwo who hang their heads and say, "Oh no, I don't want to go back to school/church But truth be

told we all know that most of us have a sense of anticipation and excitement about the newness of thistime of year.

Our Collect Last Week Read:Stir up, O Lord,

the wills of your faithful peoplethat, richly bearing the fruit of good works,

they may by you be richly rewarded;through Jesus Christ our Lord

who is alive with you and the Holy Spirit, one God now and for ever.

I am praying that we may all be stirred to move, act, love, forgive, heal, embrace, and make new thecommunity of Christ. My prayer is that as a community we will discern the many places that we canbe stirred or jarred from our complacency and work with the tremendous strengths we have to makestronger the Body of Christ.

I am excited about the stirrings of the Spirit atSt. Aidans ~ I want to highlight a few:

TheRevd Anne Jaikaran will be helping us discern how we might hold up new models ofministry to seniors as we build up the Silver Saints Ministry. Already there is an excitedgroup of volunteers who want to be the pioneers behind it.Stir up the will of Your people ohLord, that we would richly bear good fruit.

We were saddened to recently receive word ofTrish ONeils resignation asDirector of

Children Youth & Family Ministries. We give thanks for the many stirrings of the Spirit in herwork with us atSt. Aidans. At the same time we are fortunate to have a dedicated group ofChurch School Teachers who help our youngest ministers get stirred up every week.

We recently hiredAlexandra Strong as Interim Director of Childrens ChristianEducation. She began in July and has already helped our Church School Teachers be stirredand excited about the important ministry in which they are engaged.

Music is such an integral part of any liturgy. We have great music atSt. Aidans and greatleadership inDavid Weaver. Our Choir begins practicing again on Sept 19th at 7:15 pm.Music is capable of jarring us out of complacent places as well. Perhaps you have been thinking

of joining the choir? If you have, now may be the very time for you to come out.

Once a month our church takes a Sat evening at the Out of the Cold programatSt. John theEvangelist. These afternoon/evenings allow us to feed the hungry literally. Perhaps you havebeen thinking of ways that you might be able to become involved in a hands-on ministry thataddresses the needs of our common humanity this may be it!

Each organization needs good leaders. Our Parish Council is blessed with many. One of theexciting ways the Spirit is stirring our leadership group has been through the hard work ofTheFinance Committee underAndra ONeills direction. We are also very grateful for our Wardensand the work that they do:Doug Wilson-Hodge, Wendy Kilgour, Sandi Cole & Kara-Lee

Simpson have all been very busy with the many transitions taking place.

We are saddened to announce that one of our Wardens will be moving in a little over a month.Kara-Lee, along with her family, is following the Spirits call to move. We thankKara-Lee forher hard work and dedication these past couple of years. She will be greatly missed. We wishher all the best moving forward.

There will be opportunities forAdult Christian Educationthis Fall. In Oct, on Wedevenings at 7:30 pm, we will be discussing a great book byBrian McLaren : Finding Our WayAgain: The Return of the Ancient Practices. Please see the poster at the end of this newsletterfor more details. There will be an additional book group that will take us through Advent ~ stay

tuned to the Sun Bulletin for more information soon.

Beyond the aforementioned happenings and stirrings atSt. Aidans, Id like to take a moment withyou to reflect on the importance of taking the time to pray about how each of us can be moved fromour own places of comfort to become more aware of the world around us and needs of those in ourlives, communities and on a global scale.

This past week, I readDiana Butler Bass bookChristianity After Religion. It is a book that gives ourchurch much to consider. Id like to share an adaptation of a prayerbyRobert Raines from it:

O God, make me discontented with things the way they are in the world

and in my own life. Make me notice the stains when people get spilled on.Make me care about the slum child downtown, the misfit at work, people

crammed into the mental hospital, the men, women and youth behind barsJar my complacence, expose my excuses, get me involved in the life of my

city and world. Give me integrity once more, O God, as we seek to bechanged and transformed, with a new understanding and awareness of

    our common humanity.

This prayer stopped me in my tracks. The language itself is raw, honest andreal. It was one of those moments when I stopped reading, took a breath andread the words again.

This is a plea to God to have our eyes opened, hearts changed, excusesremoved and integrity restored. We are not used to such plain and honest language in prayer. Ourprayers are sometimes so gentrified that its hard to discern what plea we are making.

In its origins, prayer literally meant to plead, beg or ask earnestly. What is it that we plead and begfor of our Creator? I believe that much of what we pass off as prayer is really alaundry list of what wewould like God to do for us. What is more, we often dont spend much time listening for an answerwhen we are done with that list.

If prayer is conversation with the Divine, for much of my life, I confess it has been one-way. God has

listened while I blabbed on and on (No comments necessary here ~ some of us are aware that we talka lot!) The good news is that, at least, a couple of times I have listened and those times have led togreat movements of the Spirit.

I need to learn to listen for the voice of the Divine more often. I believe we all do. I think that if wedid, we might allow God to bring about a new awareness in us; the sort of awareness that this prayeralludes to.

I believe God wants us to become aware of how others get spilled on. God cares for us so much thatGod wishes for us to be discontented with those things that are unjust and sinful in our lives and inthe world around us. God cares for us to see the plight of the ill, the imprisoned, and those who do nofit in. But, we know that just seeing anothers need or anothers suffering is simply not enough. Godwants us to act.

ArchbishopDesmond Tutu put it this way,If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephan

has its foot on the tail of a mouse, and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciateyour neutrality.

May we all seek to search out those areas of injustice and bring the love of Christ to bear on them. Wecan all be difference makers. My prayer will be that we can become aware of where we can make adifference ~ and that we find the strength and courage to act. I look forward to the rest of 2013 as we

Thanks for the Warm Welcome & Volunteers NeededAlexandra Strong

For me, Sept means back to school, back to work and back to church.

Id first like to sayI appreciate the warm welcome Ive received sincestarting this position. Ive had the pleasure of meeting many of youand your children. For those whom Ive not yet met, Ive discoveredthe power of nametags and will make your acquaintance very soon.

We continue to use the Light curriculum in Church School whichconsists of three age groups: Bubbles (under age 5), Splash (5-8) &Xtreme (9-12). Our dedicated teachers enjoy this curriculum for itsuser-friendly style and the minimal amount of prep-time it takes toteach engaging, informative lessons.

Speaking of teaching...the Church School is always in need of

teachers. If you can sign up for one Sun a month, great! If you can signup for more, thats great too!

Just remember: Jesus Needs YOU to volunteer at Church School!

In Sept, we are learning about Joseph ~ his beautiful but troublesome coat ~ and how God is alwayspresent. Coming up in Oct,we will be learning about Johns Gospel and how Jesus cares about us.

Stay tuned for news about the Church Schools Fall Outreach Project!

We also have some exciting events to look forward to this Fall: Apple Picking (Oct 5th ), a Waiting

TreeActivity (Nov 30th) and of course, the Christmas Pageant (Dec 22nd).

These events provide excellent opportunities for us to gather, both as a church family and asindividual families. Please mark your calendars so you can join us!

I am really looking forward to working with and getting to knowSt. Aidans children and families inthe coming months. Thank you again for the warm welcome!

While this event provides a needed service of very affordable goods to the community of

London, it also gives ourSt. Aidans family a chance to work together and get to know eachother in a different setting. All forms of help would be appreciated. Please consider getting

involved. The proceeds of this sale go into general funds forSt. Aidans; along the way we alsosupport theMens Mission, Womens Shelter, and other non-profit organizations hostingclothing or book sales and the local thrift stores. This event gives back in so many ways.

Wouldnt you like to be a part of that?!

A Note from Your WardensDoug Wilson-Hodge, Wendy Kilgour, Sandi Cole & Kara-Lee Simpson

Sept is a time of transitions: the summer of fun and different routines yields to the familiar pattern ofthe regular calendar year. Children go back to school, programs start, and community events begintheir Fall programming. The church is no different. As your Wardens reflect on endings andbeginnings we thought it would be a great opportunity to reflect on the last few months and let youknow what is emerging this Fall.

Many of you will know that Trish O'Neilresigned her position asDirector of Children, Youth andFamily Ministry at the end of Aug. Trish's talented leadership and gifts will be greatly missed in thatministry and we thank God for her time and leadership with us.

Before Trish's retirement, the Wardens and Parish Council made the decision to hire an InterimDirector of Children's Christian Education. This was done to assist the Sun School teachers and co-ordinate all the functions of our Children's Ministry. Alexandra Strong was hired in mid-July for thispurpose.

Alex is a teacher, tutor and purveyor of energetic ideas related to Children's Ministry. We're thankfulshe has joined the Sun School leadership team and ask that you connect with her to find out more

about this enlightening ministry! Despite Trish's retirement, Alex's role will remain unchanged in thenear term until your Wardens and Clergy discern with Parish Council what the stipendiary ministryfor Children and Youth atSt Aidan's might look like.

Regarding other endings and beginnings,Kara-Lee andJohn Simpson have announced that theSimpson family will be moving to Niagara-on-the-Lake at the end of Oct. This will have a noticeableimpact on the Wardens, ACW, Sun School and so on! Kara-Lee and John have loved visiting andspending time in Niagara-on-the-Lake so it was a logical move for them and one they are very excitedabout! The Wardens wish to thank Kara-Lee for all she's done, especially in the last several months insupport of the many ongoing projects atSt. Aidans!

On Sept 5th, your Clergy and Wardens, along with many of you, attended theService of

Deconsecrationat the Church of the Hosannas.Bishop Terry Dance presided and preached to afull house, with many other clergy present, including, of course,Anne and Canon Kevin.

The service felt like an emotional farewell to an old and cherished family member and was made thatmuch more difficult by the discovery, that several days prior, there was a theft of the liturgical vesselsand accoutrement fromHosannas' sacristy. The especially frustrating aspect of this is that yourWardens had ensured the locks were changed months ago to prevent this very thing from happening..Needless to say, we have changed the locks again and further securedHosannas Church (now...building).

Many of you will recall the motions passed at the Special Vestry Meeting in the spring regarding

the usage of funds from the Church of the Hosannas for 1) a new sign 2) kitchen renovations and 3) tofund theSilver Saints ministry: a pastoral outreach ministry for seniors. We're pleased to report thatall three items are progressing in various stages of planning or implementation:

The Sign: we have engagedDavies Signs, selected through a competitive quote process, to designand build us our lawn sign. We are in the permit application stage. Once permits are secured, amemorial maple tree will have to be cut down to permit the best placement of the sign. As it turnsout... there is a cherry tree close to the church that has died, so we will be re-planting the memorialtree at that location. TheParish Councilhas selected the colour and soon-to-be-completed newchurch logo which will be ready to send to the sign company for incorporation onto the illuminatedand LED sign (yes... Tasteful LED messaging only!) shortly.

The integration of parish families into our newly combined parish ofSt Aidan's has been veryrewarding to see over the last six months. As we continue to transition, leadership in various rolescontinues to change and evolve. In order to ensure our community's spiritual and broad communityneeds are met, your Wardens have been mindful of the parish's health in other areas, such as financiastewardship, parish community and family life.

To address the financial points, we have set up a Finance Committee, chaired byAndra O'Neill, toprovide solid oversight and sound fiscal leadership as we merge parish finances and work through thiintegration activity. Our treasurerBrenda Fazekas has been working withKaitlin Psotka to set up thenew integratedPowerChurch program that will combine budget and actual expenses ofHosannasandSt Aidan's ~ no small task, let us assure you! The result of all this will be a solid financial systemfrom which we'll be able to generate periodic updates to the parish to assure you of our financialhealth and progress throughout the year.

Regarding our parish community and family life... There are so many good things to report! TheRevAnne Jaikaran has begun the Silver Saintsinitiative, looking to commence pastoral training forthose lay people interested.

We also have a number of other events that will cause us to come together, share time and build ourcommunity relationships: The Fall Rummage Sale, scheduled for Sat Oct 19th; aPotluck Chili Lunchset for Sun Sept 22nd following our 10:30 am service and aParish Dinner tentatively dated for Nov.

With Oct and Thanksgiving around the corner, we give thanks to God for the rich gifts we have

received, looking to the guidance of the Holy Spirit as we determine what course to chart in themonths ahead. See you in church!

    ACW ReportHeather Mills

For many years prior to Christmas, the parish ofSt. Aidans gathered toys for children in theLimberlost community as an outreach project for families in need in our own neighbourhood. Therehas been a hiatus of this activity recently, but this yearAnne Kershaw and Charlotte Southern haveagreed to resume organizing this opportunity for our parish to extend generosity to local children atChristmas.

This is accomplished through a "sign-up" sheet which lists the age and sex of each child and specifiesa gift that he/she hopes to receive. The gift donor shops for the gift and brings it to church by aspecified date; Anne and Charlotte will then deliver them to the Limberlost Association fordistribution. TheLimberlostandSouthdale Chaplaincies are now amalgamated into the unifiedLondon Community Chaplaincy. You will be hearing more about this in early Nov!

We will not be gift wrapping toiletries this year for the Cathedral at Christmas. They have a newprogram planned instead. However, please feel free to donate any new toiletries, at any time, byplacing them in theDaily Breaddonation area.Sue andPercy will take the donations to theDailyBreadon a weekly basis. This is not a Christmas activity only.

We would like to thank all of you who have helped out in any way with a funeral reception this year.Your kindness has been appreciated. If you are not on a list to help out and are willing to assist, do letme know.

Finally we are sad to say goodbye toKara-Lee and family. They have been a wonderful asset to ourchurch family. Kara -Lee has worked hard as our ACW Treasurer for many years. Thank you Kara-Lee for all the time that you have given us.

On that note, I would love to hear from anyone in the church who would like to volunteer sometime being our Treasurer starting Jan 2014. There are other positions available as well so please think

about helping out the ACW Executive. Please giveKatherine or myself a call. Katherine's number is(519) 641-2502; I can be reached at (519) 471-4422.

    Revd Anne Jaikaran

I am excited to have been invited in my role asAssistant Curate toco-ordinate a new ministry for senior citizens called The Silver Saints. This ministry will be based atSt Aidans but it is hoped that it willeventually expand to all of Northwest London, with the possibility ofworking with other denominations in the area.

Priority initiatives are in two areas. The first initiative involves thoseparishioners no longer able to get out to attend church services and

activities. To ensure that these people still feel theyre an integral part of our community, I plan to

train teams oflay Eucharistic ministersto take communion to their homes on a monthly basis, while others keep in regular contact with them through either visits or phone calls. An offer will alsobe made for them to become an Alongsider.

The Alongsiders Programme is offered by theAnglican Fellowship of Prayer specifically forshut-ins. The shut-in is given prayer resources from the AFP and is then asked to pray forSt Aidans ~the people and its various ministries ~ so whatever is taking place in the parish there will be peoplepraying alongside.

The second initiative is focused more on seniors who are more mobile; putting in place times for themto come together in a social setting and providing transportation to those who do not drive and find itdifficult to reachSt Aidans on their own.

One initiative that is already up and running is our ministry to nursing and retirement homes.Carrying over from the ministry started byChurch of the Hosannas, on the third Wed of every montha service of Eucharist is held at People Care, a long-term care facility on Oakcrossing Rd and now, since July, we also hold a service atAmica Retirement Homeon Fanshawe Park Rd on the fourthWed of each month. These services are well attended and we encourage parishioners to attend theseservices as the residents love to meet them.

By the time this article appears, a first meeting will have already been held on Sept 15th with thosewhove expressed an interest in becoming involved. But if you were not able to attend that meetingand would like to learn more aboutSilver Saints, I can be contacted at either [email protected]

On Thurs Sept 5th, over 70 people came together for aService ofDeconsecration at the Church of the Hosannas led byBishopTerry Dance. At the reception afterward, someone was heard toremark that it was like a wake after a funeral and that was truein many ways.

The life of the church building came to an end that night and itwas sad to say good bye. But, at the same time, as also at afuneral, it was a time to celebrate resurrection. Much as we do

grieve the loss of that community of faith located in Hyde Park,we also give thanks for the new life which has come from thetwo congregations ofHosannas andSt Aidans reorganizingand becoming a fresh new entity.

Many thanks to all who contributed to the service and reception in any way.

"Will you strive to safeguard the integrity of God's creation, and respect, sustain and renew the life

of the Earth?I will, with God's help."

With the passing of resolution C001 at this year'sGeneral Synod, these words were added to the

baptismal covenant in the Book of Alternative Services(BAS) as the ninth question of the

    "covenant inquiry."

Though it quotes directly from the fifth Mark of Mission (part of a framework used to describe and

encourage ministry throughout the worldwide Anglican Communion), the addition to the baptismal

covenant comes from a grassroots movement in the church.

"Sometimes the national church catches up with what's going on at the grassroots level, and in some

ways that's what's happened with this," says the Very Rev. Louise Peters, dean ofKamloops

Cathedralin the Anglican Parishes of the Central Interior, and mover of the resolution.

This came from families and young people and adults who were coming to receive baptism, wanted

and needed something more, and were asking about our role as stewards of creation. It reflects what

the church has been exploring for the last 30 to 40 years ~ the understanding that to be faithful as

Christians and as God's created beings is to be co-stewards with God.

"There is an enthusiasm out there [for the addition]. In casual conversations I've had with people,

it's been Well, absolutely ~ that makes sense.' We've been having those conversations for quite some

    time."

The official process of incorporating this language into the baptismal covenant began with a motion

by Peters at 2010's General Synod, asking that Synod direct Faith, Worship, and Ministry (FWM) to

consider the best way to include language recognizing the imperative to care for creation, and to make

a recommendation to General Synodin 2013.

In the interim, FWM formed a working group that considered baptismal liturgies from other

churches, from other provinces in the Anglican Communion, and read them aloud to each other.

"This is language that needs to be heard and spoken as well as read," says the Very Rev. Peter Wall,

seconder of the 2013 resolution and dean of Niagara.

In the course of this reading, the working group found that there was significant emphasis on creation

care in provincial rites from around the world. This year, FWM brought a resolution to General Synod

recommending an addition to the baptismal covenant based on the fifth Mark of Mission.

"We had a number of different options in terms of how to look at the language," says Peters. "We feltthat the Mark of Mission, adapted, was the most appropriate. It says it the most succinctly, and also

connects us with the Anglican Communion.

In 40 years the language will be clunky, because language changes. But for now, it's elegant, it's

articulate, it names what needs to be named in terms of living out our responsibility as Christians in

    relationship to all of life.

Naming ~ and taking up ~ that responsibility is already a way of life in theDiocese of Niagara.

"We're doing some really aggressive work in this diocese in matters environmental," says

Wall. "This [addition] actually says it out loud, and requires the people who are participating in thebaptismwhich is the assembled people of God in the congregation ~ to actually think about that.To even just make people think about it is a really important thing for us to do."
