POWER STRUGGLE Power struggles occur on every level of society, from the world stage to relationships at work, to our own homes. We struggle for position in the hierarchy of power: Who has power over whom? How do they wield it? What is the source of that power? What is the healthy response? In this Sunday's Gospel reading the Pharisees engage Jesus in a power struggle over whether Jews should show tribute to Caesar by paying taxes. Jesus' response puts this and every struggle for power into perspective. In harmony with the words of Isaiah and Paul, Jesus teaches us that God is the ultimate source of all power--the power of earthly rulers, the Pharisees, Jesus, the Church, and the power within ourselves. To Receive Holy Communion (For those who are sick, hospitalized, or home bound). Please call Gloria Bowen, Eucharistic Minister to the sick at 310-670-5971. The Family Visitation Ministry offers spiritual support to those in need. Please call Sr. Teresita @ 310-216-2001, or the Church Office @ 310-670-2243.

FOCUS: Let us strive to be people of faith, hope and love.

In the second reading, Saint Paul gives thanks to God for the assembly of Christians at Thessalonica, who were proving to be faithful disciples. The Gospel Paul preached to them, and the Gospel we hear today, is filled with the power of the Holy Spirit; let our lives bear witness to its truth and power.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

The prophet Isaiah writes of God who knows us, loves and calls us by name. We are reminded that there is no other God besides Him. Saint Paul, beginning his Letter to the Thessalonians, affirms their work of faith and love, saying he knows they were chosen by God. In Matthew’s Gospel, the Pharisees hope to trick Jesus

with their question about paying taxes. Jesus tells them to pay to Caesar what is his, and to give God what belongs to Him.

FACT OF LIFE Hope on the Horizon

Hope is on the Horizon! The Department of Health and Human Services says LIFE begins at CONCEP-TION. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released a draft of its new strategic plan that defines life as beginning at conception. "HHS accom-plishes its mission through programs and initiatives that cover a wide spectrum of activities, serving and pro-tecting Americans at every stage of life, beginning at conception," the plan reads. Conception as the start of life is mentioned again in the third goal of the blue-print. "A core component of the HHS mission is our dedication to serve all Americans from conception to natural death," the document states. - Newsweek

Kids Living Faith: Sunday, October 22nd, 2017 29th Sunday In Ordinary Time

We give thanks to God always for all of you, remembering you in our prayers... Thess 1:2

The New Testament epistles are letters the apostles wrote to guide people as the faith spread. St. Paul begins this letter by telling the people in Thessalonica that they are in his prayers. Praying for one another is powerful. It is one of the best things you can do. Thank God for the people in your life. Ask Him to bless them in a special way.

Dear God, I am so thankful to have ____________ in my life!

Product recall notices: Children use a lot of gear – from toys and sports equipment to technology. For parents,

this means keeping an eye on product recalls. Recalls alert consumers to an unsafe feature or defect that could cause harm, and offer the opportunity to have that defect corrected, or a new product shipped out. Parents can use product recall search engines and online checklists to keep an eye on their children’s toys and take action if any recalls are issued. For a copy of the VIRTUS© article “Stay Up-to-Date on Product Recalls,” visit: http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx or call (213) 637-7508.

Whether you are approaching the season with fond memories and high hopes or you are dreading the stresses the season may bring, we invite you to journey with us to explore the myths of Christmas, the social and personal consequences of the holiday season, and the reality of Advent.
