Market for Mission Sunday, December 3, Fellowship Hall, 9am-10:30am

The annual Market for Mission, sponsored by the St. Andrew Mission Committee, will be held on Sunday morning, December 3. There will be SERRV crafts, with gifts costing $25 and under, including Christmas decorations and Nativity sets. They are made by artisans from around the globe. SERRV enables them to receive fair market prices for their hard work, helping to reduce poverty in developing countries. Church groups as well as St Andrew Mission Partners will also be represented. They will be selling goods to raise money for their projects and will have information available. A continental breakfast will be served starting at 9 AM. Come shop the Market for your Christmas gift giving this year. See you there.

Treehouse Thanksgiving Donations Thank you to everyone who has donated to help our Treehouse families with their Thanksgiving meals. We will use these donations to purchase gift cards to help the families with their holiday meal. If you have not yet had the opportunity to contribute, we will continue to accept donations through Sunday, November 12. Cash or check donations will be accepted in the church office throughout the week and with the offering on Sunday. Please write “Treehouse Thanksgiving” on your check or envelope to be sure it gets to the right place.

*Apostles’ Creed (ecumenical version) I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Recognition Of New Members and Sacrament of Baptism

Words of Preparation

As children of the covenant, we grow in faithfulness nurtured by God and called to service. As our life’s journey takes us to different places, we unite with God’s people and seek to live out our calling as members of particular congregations.

Today we recognize how God calls people into communities of faith to live out their work as disciples of Christ. Some of those before us come with a history of service in other churches; others are discovering life in a faith community for the first time; all now claim this congregation as their home.

We celebrate and welcome new members into our community of faith, and commit ourselves to working together as each of us lives out our calling as a disciple of Christ.

Presentation of New MembersRuling Elder Kathi Sale: On behalf of the Session, I report that since June, 2017, the following have met with the Session and have been received into membership of this congregation: Betsy, Gail, and Brad Dunn; Lorrie Caldwell; Sara Huffstetler; Kit and David McRae; Bob Schumm; Jill and John Richmond; Mary Watkins; Teresa and Keith Johnson; Elizabeth and Roy Hinkel; Nathan Hale; Roy Wilks; and Myrtle and Tom Muehlenbeck.

You come to us as members of the one holy catholic church, into which you were baptized and by which you have been nurtured. We are one with each other, sisters and brothers in the family of God. We rejoice in the gifts you bring to us. As you join with us in the worship and service of this congregation, I invite you to reaffirm the covenant into which we all were baptized, claiming again the promises of God which are ours in baptism.

Questions for the New Members Do you trust in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?Do you intend to be Christ’s disciple, to obey his work and to show his love?Do you promise to be a faithful member of this congregation, to share in its ministry through your prayers and your gifts, your study and your service, and so fulfill your calling to be a disciple of Christ?Teresa, do you desire to be baptized?

Questions for the Congregation Who stands with our new members?Do we commit to nurture and support them in learning and being challenged by God’s Word? Do we commit to join with them in working together to be the body of Christ for our world?

Sacrament of Baptism

Prayer (unison)Holy God, we praise you for calling us to be a servant people and for gathering us into the body of Christ. We thank you for sending Betsy, Gail, Brad, Lorrie, Sara, Kit, David, Bob, Jill, John, Mary, Teresa, Keith Johnson; Elizabeth, Roy, Nathan, Roy, Myrtle, and Tom to unite with our congregation. We celebrate the gifts they bring to us and look forward to the opportunity to nurture them and challenge them, and to be nurtured and challenged by them. Together, may we live in your Spirit, and so love one another, that we may have the mind of Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom we give honor and glory forever. Amen.

WelcomeRuling Elder Kathi Sale: Let us welcome our new members as they join with us in the worship and mission of the church. With joy and thanksgiving we welcome you to share with us in the ministry of Christ, for we are all one in him.

Call to Worship (Adapted from Psalm 78) Listen, dear friends, to God’s truth, bend your ears to what I tell you. We are chewing on the morsel of a proverb; we are telling the old truths,Stories we heard from our fathers,Counsel we learned at our mother’s knee. We’re not keeping this to ourselves, we’re passing it along to the next generation.Telling all about God’s fame and fortune, the marvelous things God has done.

Opening Prayer Lisa Patterson

*Hymn 399 God Welcomes All (3x) THEMBA AMEN

Prayer of Confession

We confess, O God, our reticence to step forward in discipleship. We prefer holding back for fear of what others might think of us. We find ourselves sliding along the path of least resistance, even when it means moving away from you, O God. Forgive us our watered down faith that cannot stand up to the pressures and challenges we encounter and show us how to stand firm in our faith. In Christ’s name, we pray. Amen (Silent confession).

Declaration of Pardon Friends, believe the good news of the gospel. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

Sung Response Lamb of God Hymn 604Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us (2x).Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; grant us peace; grant us peace.

Call to Faithfulness (Adapted from John 13: 34)Jesus said, “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.”

*Hymn 724 O Jesus, I Have Promised ANGEL’S STORy

Amen.

Prayers of the People and The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Lesson 3, “In Community with the Living Word” (Heb. 1:1-3a; 4:4-13), teaches God’s true Word is alive, active and reassuring for ancient Israel and the early church. The Rev. Dr. Fred Cassell leads our study. All women are welcome. For more information, please contact Elizabeth Hagen at (940) 455-7217.
