St. Andrew School November Newsletter 2015 Message from Administration It has been another busy and eventful month at St. Andrew School. We would like to thank everyone for any and all contributions you make in helping create a wonderful place to teach and learn. Whether you donate your time through volunteering in the school, attend our monthly school council meetings, or help out in any other way, it is greatly appreciated. Without your support the amazing enhancements taking place such as our family pumpkin carving night, our upcoming Family Dance (November 20 th ), and activities such as swimming and in-line skating would not be possible. November promises to be another exciting month of teaching and learning. We are having a Remembrance Day guest speaker on Tuesday, November 9 th at 10:30 followed by our Remembrance liturgy on November 10 th at 10:30 a.m. There is no school on Wednesday, November 11 th . If you are looking for a meaningful way to remember our veterans on this day here are a few ideas: Calgary Remembrance Day activities. Progress Reports go home on November 20 and Parent/Teacher Conferences are the evening of November 26 (4:30 7:30) and November 27 (9:00 11:30, 1:00 3:00). St. Andrew’s 2015 Christmas Fundraiser Trees & Wreaths

Back by popular demand, we’re once again selling Nova Scotia Balsam Fir trees and handmade wreaths directly from a family-owned tree farm in Erinville, Nova Scotia. These are beautiful, aromatic trees with soft needles.

The products …

The trees come baled, as shown in the top photo on the right. After cutting the twine, they open up, as pictured in the bottom photo. The trees are pruned over the years to produce perfectly-shaped Christmas trees.

To ensure freshness, all trees and wreaths are cut mid-November, then shipped via refrigerated trucks – not exposed to sun, heat or wind.

The trees can be stored outside, in an area sheltered from the sun and wind. Before placing your Christmas tree in a stand, cut about ½” to 1” off the bottom of the tree to allow for better water absorption.

The wreaths come undecorated, so you can add your own personal touch.

The details …

Several tree and wreath sizes are available, as listed on the order form (see flipside).

Order forms and payment are due back to the school by Tuesday, November 3rd. (Unfortunately, we will not be able to accept any late orders.)

Pay by cash or cheque payable to St. Andrew’s Educational Society.

Faith Day – Monday, November 2

All schools and administrative offices will be closed on Monday, November 2 as Calgary Catholic celebrates our annual Faith Day. Faith Day is an opportunity for all district staff to come together as a community to reflect on our beliefs and values and to deepen our understanding of our shared mission in Catholic education. This year, Father Greg Boyle, founder of Homeboy Industries, will be the keynote speaker. Father Greg will be speaking on his ministry to the marginalized and how we are all called to work on the ‘peripheries’ as Pope Francis directs and models for us.

Remembrance Day – Wednesday, November 11

All schools and administrative offices will be closed on Wednesday, November 11 to observe Remem-brance Day. Our schools hold special ceremonies prior to Remembrance Day to commemorate those who sacrificed their lives in world conflicts. Remembrance Day is a time to pray for peace, and to con-sider what we are doing as individuals and as a community to bring God’s peace and love to the world.

National Child Day – Friday, November 20

On November 20, Canada and countries around the world celebrate National Child Day as a remind-er of our shared commitment to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). The CRC is the most comprehensive treaty in support of children. Calgary Catholic is a partner in National Child Day Alberta. Wear blue on November 20 to show your support of National Child Day and visit the website to learn more about events happening in Calgary.
