FROM THE PASTOR' S DESK After watching the tumultuous events of the past several weeks, I am certain that we all have become more acutely aware of the racism, oppression and discrimination that exists within our society and our institutions. It intrigues me that we as a society continue to struggle with these issues. Were we not all created in the image and likeness of God? When one particular group perceives themselves as superior, they attempt to make themselves better than God. The underlying problem with racism and prejudice is the core belief that God does not know how to create; that one's myopic perception supersedes the creative hand of God. Hmmm….I am not sure I would want to stand before the judgment seat if I promulgated that type of racial hatred during my earthly life. Our church has been preaching a fundamental truth that is grounded in our doctrine, namely…All life is sacred, from the womb to the tomb.

When my father was a young boy, he was playing on the opposite side of the tracks in Gibbstown in an area known as Dupont village. This was the section of town where most Dupont executives lived, and if you were Italian, you simply were not permitted to enter that section. One of the homeowners in Dupont village saw him playing and came out their back door yelling at this young Italian boy, calling him all the stereotypical names of the day, and told him to get his greasy (you know what) out of here. My father, about the age of seven, felt the racial hatred and did the first thing that came to his mind. He picked up a stone…. hurled it at the man…and ran home as fast as he could. He sat on the back steps and waited for my grandfather to come home to tell him about the incident, expecting to be praised. However, my grandfather was direct with him and told him this is not the way we treat others, despite the way others treat us. He made my father promise never to act like that again. My father was disappointed in my grandfather's advice….but in reality….it was good advice…for it is Gospel advice.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if when we looked at our neighbor, we would see the creative hand of God in our differences. Did you know that when Msgr. Ciaran O Mearain was Pastor he shared with me that this parish had calculated there were 86 different ethnic

communities that comprised the parish of St. Andrew the Apostle. We are a tapestry of ethnic backgrounds that form a beautiful image of a faithful community of believers. That said, it seems to me that almost every ethnic community that has come into our land has experienced prejudice. I know the many stories of hatred and discrimination against people who are black, white, brown, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, male, female, able-bodied, disabled, born, and unborn. Whether one community has experienced more hatred and violence than another reminds us that we must all stand together, as one nation under God. Do we really think that the removal of statues will bring an end to racial hatred? It might make some feel good for a moment, but it certainly will not affect cultural change. Perhaps we should put our energy into living the Gospel of Jesus Christ and recognize that all are created in the image and likeness of God, and are called to live by His principles.

What intrigues me about all of this is that the United States is formed as a land of immigrants. Alone among the great nations of the world, Americans define their identity outside the boundaries of geography or common ethnic ancestry. For us there is no fatherland; nor can most of us trace our ancestors back five and six generations or more, as the British, French, Norwegians, and Irish so proudly do. The stories of how my grandparents emigrated into the United States, at 15 or 16 years of age, simply amaze me. They yearned for a life that would bring fulfillment and blessings and were willing to sacrifice everything for a taste of what America might provide. Our ancestors were a people who have come from every corner of the globe, most in the last century, in pursuit of a most noble and remarkable vision – that in this land men and women could live in freedom and liberty with their God-given rights respected.

It is, therefore, a common creed, not common ancestral roots, which binds us together. That creed was best expressed in the Declaration of Independence that announced, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Americans are forever indebted

to those who pledged their lives and fortunes and sacred honor to make this experiment in ordered liberty possible. "Gratitude," G.K. Chesterton wrote, "is the mother of all virtues." As Americans, and as Christians, we have reason to be filled with gratitude at all times; gratitude to God who gave us the opportunity to come to this land and to live in freedom; gratitude to our Founding Fathers who set forth those principles that constitute our creed; and gratitude to following generations who have defended us, and those that still do today.

The history of the past 244 years shows what a difference loyalty to principled beliefs can make. America has never sought wars of expansion. It has sought to liberate and restore those it has defeated. It has shared its bounty and wealth with the poor. It has rescued the suffering. It has done this not because the fatherland orders it, but because of our devotion to human dignity and human liberty demands it. America is different – it is a vision, a noble idea and for that extraordinary difference, Americans should give thanks to God each day and pledge anew to do their duty out of gratitude to Him and to our Founding Fathers.

Perhaps this Independence Day, we might pray for the victims of racial hatred, stop responding with violence, and place the responsibility for equality on all our shoulders. Let's not place our emphasis on tearing statues down but building people up. All of us are who we are because of our past, and it is through faithful

living that we can create a better future. So, let me suggest that if we want an end to hatred, prejudice, racism, and violence, let us turn to Almighty God, get serious about living Gospel values, and offer this prayer for our country:

Almighty God you have given us this great land as our heritage. We humbly pray that we may always remember your generosity and faithfully do your will. Bless our land with honest industry, truthful education, and an honorable way of life. Defend our liberties and strengthen the resolve of all those who have come from various places in the world to make America their home. Lead us to choose the harder right instead of the easier wrong. Help us to appreciate the opportunities that are ours as we struggle to bring harmony to an unsettled world. May we balance our concern for justice with a willingness to display mercy and may our concern for security be tempered with a willingness to take risks that will produce worthwhile change for the good of all people. Let us end senseless violence, and work toward Gospel peace. O Lord, we pray for your guidance as we work together for the best interest of our communities, our nation, our world, and the goal of peace. When times are prosperous, let our hearts be thankful, and in troubled times may our deepest trust be forever in you. Amen. With a loving and grateful heart…. Msgr. Marucci, VF, D.Min.

A word of gratitude to Msgr. Marucci, Fr. Victorino, Msgr. Frey, Deacon Craig and all of the staff and faithful of St. Andrew the Apostle Parish for your love and support and for welcoming me back during these past few months of the COVID pandemic. It was wonderful to return to St. Andrew’s and, while I am sad to be leaving the parish again, I consider it a great blessing to have prepared for my diaconate ordination and to serve at the parish during those interesting four months and for that I will always be grateful! I thank you for the love you have shown to me and I know that you will extend that same love and affection to Deacon Paul. Please keep me in your prayers as I begin my time at Holy Child Parish in Runnemede and know that all of you are in my thoughts and prayers. Until we meet again, may God bless you and Our Lady keep you! I will be keeping my St. Andrew’s email address, so feel free to reach me there as well!

Knights of Columbus Mignogna Scholarship Each year the Mignogna family offers a $1000 scholarship to a student in either a Catholic High School or College. Essays are submitted and reviewed by a team of Knights of Columbus from St. Jude council. This year’s winner was Carmela Lozano. Her essay was both moving and inspiring. St. Jude Council wishes her well as she enters college The officers and members of St. Jude council wish to thank the Mignogna family for their generosity and caring.

REPORT SEXUAL ABUSE An independent, toll-free number has been estab-lished by the Diocese of Camden to help callers report cases of sexual abuse by priests, deacons, religious, employees and/or volunteers. Calls are handled by a licensed clinical social worker. In accord with state law, cases of child sexual abuse are reported to the N.J. Division of Child Protection and Permanency and law enforcement. Christian Cupboard We continue to assist families with food weekly and are grateful for your food and monetary donations. Last week we assisted twenty-one families. Groceries needs: Syrup Jelly Pancake mix Soup Rice

Jail Ministry St. Andrew’s delivered over 800 facial masks to Camden County Jail in the past several weeks meeting an urgent request to protect the inmate population from the coronavirus. Over 20 volunteers worked rigorously to make the facial masks as quickly as possible to meet the urgent need. Sgt. Kelly emailed to thank our volunteers. “The facial masks are working great! We couldn't have done this job without your support. Thanks so much!”
