Did you know?

The me between Passion (Palm) Sunday through Holy Saturday.

For the past few weeks, I kept telling myself, “I can’t believe that Easter is a few weeks away.” People all around me kept saying the same thing. Lent has passed by quickly, and this weekend we celebrate Palm Sunday. It has been a year since the pandemic became public. Where did the me go? Perhaps the pandemic reminds us to make me for essen al things because me goes by too fast. And, making

me for Jesus during Holy Week is indeed an important thing.

Passion Sunday, formerly called Palm Sunday, marks the start of Holy Week by recalling Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem at the beginning of the last week of his life. A procession and other ceremonies commemora ng the event were held in Jerusalem from the fourth century and were adopted by Rome by the ninth century. At that me, the blessing of palms for the occasion was introduced. Later, in the Middle Ages, a wooden statue of Christ si ng on a donkey, the whole image on wheels, was drawn in the center of the procession. These statues, known as Palmesel or “Palm Donkey,” may s ll be seen in museums in European ci es. In past years, full liturgical observance included the blessing of palms and a procession before the Mass. The Passion- by Ma hew, Mark, or Luke, depending on the year- is read during the Mass of this Sunday. This year, because of the pandemic, we will adapt the ritual to

keep everyone safe but commemorate its importance in other ways. In most countries, genuine palms are una ainable for Passion Sunday, so various other branches are used.

Centuries ago, not only branches but flowers were blessed, and in some countries, the day is called “Flower Sunday.” In La n countries and the United States, palm leaves are o en shaped into li le crosses or other symbolic designs. The faithful reverently keep these in their homes during the year. This custom was originated by a sugges on in the ceremonial book for bishops that “li le crosses of palm be a ached to the boughs wherever genuine palms are not available in sufficient quan ty.”

Holy Thursday, or Maundy Thursday, commemorates the ins tu on of the sacraments of Eucharist and holy orders and

features a foot-washing rite that commemorates Christ’s washing of the feet of the Apostles at the Last Supper. Although this ritual cannot be done this year, we will focus on the gi of the Eucharist, the call to service, and the gi of the priesthood. The term “Maundy” is derived from the La n word mandatum and describes the great commandment of the Lord: “Love one another as I have loved you.” Following the Mass on Holy Thursday, there will be a short procession of the Blessed Sacrament by the ministers to repose the Blessed Sacrament for adora on by the faithful. A er the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, the altar will be stripped, and all decora ons except those at the repository shrine will be removed. This ac on symbolizes the body of Christ, which was stripped of its garments. From the La n for “three days,” the Triduum con nues un l Vespers (evening prayer) on Easter Sunday. The period recalls Christ’s ins tu on of the sacraments of Eucharist and holy orders, his Passion and death, and his triumphant resurrec on from the dead. Good Friday commemorates the Passion and death of Christ. The liturgy includes the reading of the Passion according to John, special

prayers for the Church, for an end to the pandemic, for civil rulers and for people of all ranks, the venera on of the cross, and a Communion service. The celebra on occurs in the a ernoon, at three o’clock, the hour that Christ is believed to have died on the cross. The Communion service, held in place of the sacrifice of the Mass, is known as the “Mass of the Presanc fied.” Good Friday has been celebrated from the earliest centuries as a day of mourning, fas ng, and prayer. A er the solemn ceremonies of Good Friday are concluded, the altar is stripped again, the tabernacle is le open, no lights are le burning in the sanctuary, and only the crucifix takes the place of honor in front of the empty tabernacle. On this day, the cross is venerated by genuflec on rather than a bow. A special version of the Sta ons of the Cross will be celebrated at 7:30 PM.

On Holy Saturday, the Sacrifice of the Mass is not celebrated, and Holy Communion may be given to those in danger of death. Tradi onally, Holy Saturday has been a me of preparing at home for the Easter celebra on. The Mass is not celebrated un l the sun sets and the great Easter Vigil begins, the most solemn Mass of the liturgical year.

Since at least the fourth century, Chris anity has marked Holy Week. A er the me of the persecu ons, Chris an emperors of both the East and West issued various decrees forbidding amusements and games. They directed that these days were spent free from worldly occupa ons and en rely devoted to religious exercises. Pardons were granted to those in prison, and many charges in court were dropped in honor of Christ’s Passion.

In the Middle Ages, all secular business was prohibited, and the me was spent in recollec on and prayer. O en, kings and rulers secluded themselves in monasteries. During some eras, no servile work was allowed during the Triduum, and the faithful were to be present at all liturgies. In 1642, Pope Urban VIII, because of the changing condi ons of social life, rescinded this obliga on.

We are working steadily towards achieving our Parish goal of $225,000. Your contribu ons are truly appreciated and valued at this me of great need due to the economic and social impact of the pandemic. We realize that your financial and family situa on are likely to be adversely affected as well which makes your giving truly an act of love. We s ll have some way to go. If you would like to contribute to the House of Charity, you can visit their webpage— h ps://www.camdendiocese.org/hoc/. It lists different methods of sending dona ons. Your help is certainly more deeply felt and will make a change to your brother or sister in need. 10% of the funds collected up to our goal will remain at St. Andrew’s, and 75% of the funds collected over the goal will remain in our parish for local use. INTRODUCTORY RITES Gree ng In the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And with your spirit Peniten al Act I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sister, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore, I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. Amen. Lord, Have Mercy Kyrie eleison Christe eleison Kyrie eleison

First Reading Isaiah 50: 4-7 A reading from the Prophet Isaiah The Lord GOD has given me a well-trained tongue, that I might know how to speak to the weary a word that will rouse them. Morning a er morning he opens my ear that I may hear; and I have not rebelled, have not turned back. I gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who plucked my beard; my face I did not shield from buffets and spi ng. My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?

All who see me scoff at me; they mock me with parted lips, they wag their heads: “He relied on the LORD; let him deliver him, let him rescue him, if he loves him.” R.

Indeed, many dogs surround me, a pack of evildoers closes in upon me; They have pierced my hands and my feet; I can count all my bones. R.

They divide my garments among them, and for my vesture they cast lots. But you, O LORD, be not far from me; O my help, hasten to aid me. R.

I will proclaim your name to my brethren; in the midst of the assembly I will praise you: “You who fear the LORD, praise him; all you descendants of Jacob, give glory to him; revere him, all you descendants of Israel!” R. Second Reading Philippians 2: 6-11 A reading from Paul’s le er to the Philippians Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emp ed himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is

O dearest St. Joseph, I consecrate myself to thy honor and give myself to thee, that thou mayest always be my father, my protector, and my guide in the way of salva on. Obtain for me a great purity of heart and a fervent love of the interior life. A er thine example, may I do all my ac ons for the greater glory of God, in union with the Divine Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary! And do thou, O Blessed St. Joseph, pray for me that I may share in the peace and joy of thy holy death. Amen.

A S C My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Mass and Worship A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS

HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly Most Holy Name Catholic Church, Garfield, NJ

“Even though I should have to die with you I will not deny you. And they all spoke similarly. Then they came to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, ‘Sit here while I pray.’ He took with him Peter, James and John, and began to be troubled and distressed. Then he said to them, ‘My soul is sorrowful even to death. Remain here and keep watch.’ He advanced a li le and fell to the ground and prayed.”

Following the last supper, we join the three disciples and Jesus in the garden. We hear His prayer as the apostles fall asleep. The hurt of the betrayal, soon to be followed by the denial filled the heart of Jesus. We are present to support and console Him. Yet all which takes place is to comfort, console and save us. We move from sorrow to gra tude for what the Lord did and does for us today. The Christ who suffered for us, suffers in His peo-ple today. May we find comfort, but also act to ease the hurts of others near and far. Jesus, save us.

WHAT OUR PALM BRANCHES REALLY MEAN

By Mary Marrocco, Catholic News Service

Now, at Palm Sunday, it’s me to be accounted for. It’s me to take up something. Our Lenten journey has been mainly hidden. We’ve been medita ng, praying, doing works of mercy in secret, fas ng in our own ways — trying, failing, trying again. Now it’s me to act, to take up palms and go out, as the people who welcomed Jesus did. They didn’t stay home and watch him on their newsfeed. They went into the streets, picked palm branches and met him singing Hosanna: “O save us!” Palm branches are reminiscent of victory parades. But more important, they point us to martyrdom, which means “witness.” We are asked to witness Christ, not only in inward hidden ways but also publicly with the way we live. For some, this witness is even unto death. The Cop c Chris ans who were beheaded in 2015 are painted holding palms in their hands, for they showed by their lives who Christ is. They met violence with love. They remind us that being Chris an is not just “all about me” and making myself a be er person — though it does allow and challenge me to become more God-like. Chris anity is also about be ering one’s world, laying down one’s life for others, and in this way following Christ. We see today the joy of le ng Christ in. He is welcomed with exultant joy and singing. How overjoyed we are to know God and to know that God loves us and will never disappear or give up on us. We can’t keep it in, so we have to go out to meet him waving green branches and singing to him. It’s so beau ful, so glorious, it bubbles to the surface and

overflows for the whole city to see. We are welcoming God! More astonishing s ll, we are welcoming humanity. The early Gospel commentators saw the donkeys as a symbol of Christ’s humanity, as with the donkey on which the good Samaritan placed the

wounded traveler. When we see Christ riding a donkey, we see God taking up humanity. Like the donkey, our humanity becomes a bearer of God. Christ enters into Jerusalem in a state of humility, because God enters the world carrying our humanity. Ul mately, then, rejec on of Jesus is not only rejec on of God, but also of humanity, for Christ is truly human as well as truly God. Why should we reject Jesus? Because it’s not easy to be with him. To enter Jerusalem on a donkey, as he did, is not glorious like entering on a fine horse or a jet airplane. Jesus’ donkey ride shows us that this is a journey of humility. It will make us a laughingstock. This journey will lead us through who we truly are as human beings. Along this path, we will find God even in those parts of us that are most frightened to let God in, most resistant to being changed, most inclined to cling to power and fight back. Today as we pick up our palms, we share our joy in Christ. At the same me, we pick up the cross. In the Byzan ne liturgy, as the people pick up the palms they sing: “Today we all take up your cross.” As the perilous journey ends and begins, let’s enter Holy Week together. Let’s risk accep ng the joy of welcoming both God and humanity. God will not disappear on us. He gives us the capacity to love, no ma er what. Let’s not be ashamed of him or of our humanness, but claim them. Let’s look for victory not in pomp and military might but by way of humility, powerlessness, love and forgiveness. Here is true joy. Here is the way to meet the early dawn of Easter Sunday. Let’s be unafraid to wave the palm. To pick up the cross. And to meet the new life that awaits.

MEMO TO: ALL PRIESTS, ALL PARISHES FROM: FATHER ROBERT HUGHES, V.G. RE: JACK CONNORS AND HEARTLAND HOSPICE

We have learned that Catholics in the care of a certain hospice agency have been connected with a minister who is a former priest of Camden Diocese, excommunicated by the Holy See for joining the Old Catholic Church. He ambiguously represents himself as a legitimate priest. While interacting with hospice chaplains of other religious is not a problem, you deserve to see a Catholic priest for the administration of the Sacraments. If you are ever unsure, ask the minister if he is a Catholic priest. Ambiguously names groups like the Old Catholic Church, the Polish Catholic Church, and others are not the same as the Catholic Church. Your parish priests are here to make sure you receive the spiritual care that you need. Call the parish office and please don’t wait until the last minute. If you become aware that Jack Connors is ministering in a parish or to parishioners, please contact the Chancery.
