    FEAST OF FAITH

    What Is the Mass?

What is the Mass? There is no simple answer to that ques on. The Church uses many different images and terms to describe our most important prayer. The Mass is the celebra on of the Eucharist, a Greek word that means “thanksgiving.” It is the Lord’s Supper. It is the Breaking of the Bread. It is the memorial of the Lord’s passion, death, and resurrec on. It is the Holy Sacrifice, in which the sacrifice of Christ on the cross is perpetuated. It is the holy and divine liturgy, the sacred mysteries. It is the source and summit of our Chris an lives, the new covenant, the work of the Holy Spirit, the paschal mystery. The many different words and images that we use when we speak of the Mass are not signs of confusion, but of wonder at what the Catechism of the Catholic Church (1328) calls the “inexhaus ble richness” of the Eucharist. The Mass, our greatest prayer and our deepest mystery, is celebrated every day, many mes a day, the world over. The Eucharist is both “bread from heaven” and “daily bread.” The Mass is our everyday miracle.

PRAYER TO OUR LADY OF THE

IMMACULATE CONCEPTION O God, who by the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, did prepare a worthy dwelling place for your Son, we beseech You that, as by the foreseen death of this, Your Son, You did preserve her from all stain, so too you would permit us, purified through her intercession, to come unto you. Through the same Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, world without end. —AMEN

    Advent Prayer

    Lord Jesus,

Master of both the light and the darkness, send your Holy Spirit upon our preparation for Christmas.

We who have so much to do seek quiet spaces to hear

    your voice each day.

We who are anxious over many things look forward to your coming among us.

We who are blessed in so many ways long for the

    complete joy of your kingdom.

We whose hearts are heavy seek the joy of your presence.

We are your people, walking in darkness, yet seeking the light.

To you we say, “Come Lord Jesus!”

    Amen.

PRAYER TO OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE

Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mystical Rose, Make intercession for the Holy Church,

Protect the sovereign Pontiff, Help all those who invoke you in their

necessities, And since you are the ever Virgin Mary,

And Mother of the true God, Obtain for us from your most holy Son

The grace of keeping our faith, Sweet hope in the midst of the bitterness of

life, Of burning charity, and the previous gift of

    Final perseverance.

    Amen

RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS Next weekend, December 12th and 13th, parishes across the Diocese of Joliet are encouraged to support the annual Retirement Fund for Religious. In good times and bad, senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests have served our Church and world. Today, they pray for a world that is hurting. Yet hundreds of religious communities do not have enough retirement savings and struggle to provide for aging members. Your gift to today’s Retirement Fund for Religious collection helps provide medication, nursing care, and more. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

GOD’S DELAY In times of great difficulties scoffers taunt us, “Where is God? Why hasn’t your Lord come to save you now?” And we of faith respond much in the same way as Peter did in today’s second reading: the “delay” of the Lord’s second coming is not any type of punish-ment or failure to keep the divine promise, but a lov-ing sign of God’s patience. God is giving everyone the chance to seek repentance. God does not make life more difficult. Rather, God lessens our burdens as once before for the Jew-ish exiles returning home to Judea after captivity in Babylon. It was God who personally led them, making a “straight highway” for them across the desert. We join with our ancestors of faith, who hoped that they might see God’s Chosen One before them and who eventually realized that the Lord was also walking with them side by side. Copyright © J. S. Modlitwa w dzień Niepokalanego Poczęcia NMP

Przez niepokalane poczęcie Twoje, prosimy Cię Pani i Królowo nasza, abyś nas grzechem pokalanych, a dusze nasze niewiarą zbrudzone, przez łaską Twoją oczyścić raczyła; a odziawszy nas naprzód w pokutną włosiennicę, przystroiła później w szatę, niewinności , i osłoniętych płaszczem Twego miłosierdzia, przedstawiła Boskiemu Synowi Twojemu.

CHRISTMAS WAFERS (OPLATEK) The traditional Christmas Wafers (Oplatek) are available for purchase at the table near the altar after all Masses beginning this weekend. The suggested donation for each packet is $4.00. Oplatek can also be purchased at the Parish Office by calling ahead.

The tradition of breaking and sharing the wafers before Christmas Eve dinner originated in Poland and is still popular there and in many other Eastern European countries. The tradition goes something like this: Just before the Christmas Eve meal, the entire family gathers around the table with the Christmas wafer. Generally the eldest member of the family, usually the father or mother, will begin the ritual by breaking off a piece of the wafer and passing it to another family member while giving a blessing. This blessing can simply consist of what you desire for your loved ones in the upcoming year—whether it be good health, growth in God’s grace or happiness. It can also be a request for forgiveness and a desire for reconciliation. The Christmas wafer I then passed from person to person around the table until all have had a piece and all have been given blessings. Each person then consumer their piece of the Oplatek in a special display of love and solidarity between the whole family. If you have friends or family who live far away, the wafer is an excellent way to reach out to them and let them know they are loved and missed and are still an integral part of the family or group. The wafers are thin and surprisingly sturdy that they can be carefully mailed in a Christmas card without braking. However you incorporate the tradition into your circle of family and friends, it is a wonderful way to celebrate the Christmas spirit of peace, love, joy and goodwill.

    FEAST OF FAITH

Watching for Christ’s Coming In the season of Advent, we look to the coming of Christ at the end of me, and we prepare ourselves to celebrate his first coming among us at Christmas. Remembrance of the past is combined with prepara on for the future. Memory meets ac on. In a certain sense, the Mass is an Advent prayer. At the Last Supper, Jesus did not tell his disciples, “Never forget what I did for you.” Instead, he said, “Do this in remembrance of me.” He calls us to remember by doing, to combine memory with ac on. In the celebra on of the Eucharist, remembering and doing become one. Jesus is as present in our midst as he was in that upper room, breaking the bread and sharing the cup; but it is a new kind of presence, seen only with the eyes of faith. In the heavenly liturgy, there will be no need of sacraments, for there, “celebra on is wholly communion and feast” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1136). Here, things are different. We have only glimpses and flashes of the beauty that is yet to be. And yet, in the liturgy, we truly par cipate in the heavenly liturgy. The Mass is our foretaste of the joys of heaven. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

  • St. Andrew the Apostle We Care Food Pantry

The St. Andrew We Care Food Pantry is open every Wednesday from 10:00 am. until 12:30 p.m. for any eligible family in Romeoville in need of food assistance. Our pantry is open only to Romeoville residents so proof of residency and an ID must be shown upon sign-in each week. If you are a parishioner of St. Andrew and you find yourself in need of food assistance, you are more than welcome to come to the We Care Food Pantry also. Proof of residency is a utility bill with your name and address on it plus your Driver’s License or State of Illinois ID. That must be brought in each time you come for food assistance.

The Pantry is located at 219 Arlington. For further information, please contact Tom Sedlacek at (815) 953-5650. This is the new phone number to call for food pantry inquiries and assistance. Thank you and God Bless.
