Theological Questions Answer to last week’s question: Is it a sin to be late for Mass or to leave before Mass is over? Yes. As we saw in last week’s question, it is a grave sin to miss Mass without a serious reason. The Third Command-ment says, “Remember to keep holy the Lord’s Day” (Exodus 20). See also the Catechism (#2180-2181). The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharistic celebration on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for ex-ample, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor. Those who deliberately fail in this obligation com-mit a grave sin. The Precept of the Church that requires the faithful to par-ticipate in the Mass requires that they participate in the en-tire Mass. We should avoid any deliberate compromise with this obligation. We should normally arrive before Mass begins in order to prepare ourselves properly for Mass. Likewise it is helpful to spend some time in prayer and thanksgiving after Mass. When people leave Mass before the final blessing, it takes away from the spirit of prayer that should characterize the community. People should remain in their places until the priest has left the altar. The seriousness of the sin is somewhat proportionate to” how much” of the Mass is omitted, as well as “why”. For example, arriving one or two minutes late might be less se-rious, but arriving after the Gospel would be serious. If one misses a major portion of the Mass, the obligation to “attend Mass” has not been fulfilled, and one should attend another Mass. Everyone understands how emergencies and unexpected problems can occasionally delay us, despite our good inten-tions. But the attitude of “not wanting to be there” for the act of Divine Worship would indicate a serious matter. Good habits in this matter should be cultivated devoutly. New Question: What is the significance of the “Sabbath” in the Old Testament?

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults … Each year, beginning in the fall and continuing until the Easter Vigil Mass, a series of instructional clas-ses in the Catholic Faith will be held. Both unbap-tized and baptized non-Catholics are welcome to at-tend these classes to learn more about the faith. There is no obligation or pressure to join the Church at any time. You or someone in your family, perhaps a spouse or a friend, may be interested in knowing and under-standing better what we as Catholics believe and how we strive to live out our faith on a daily basis. This is a great opportunity to join with others in spending an hour each week learning about the Cath-olic Faith and helping each other in their faith jour-ney. RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) classes will begin in September and continue up to the Easter Vigil. Please contact the Parish Office at 703-817-1770 or [email protected] for more information.

HOLY LAND WOOD CARVINGS NEXT WEEKEND…. August 26th/27th, 2017, there will be a display of beautiful olivewood handmade carvings from the Holy Land in Our Church. These Carvings are made by the Christians of Bethlehem who use them as their source of in-come. These brothers and sisters of ours are enduring hard-ships at this moment because of the volatile situation in their home country. Christians in the Holy Land used to be more than 37% of the population. There is less than 1% now because of the situation. As Christians of faith, it is our duty to support our brothers and sisters in Bethlehem. YOU can support them by purchasing some of these beautiful carvings after Mass. Thank you in advance for all your help and support!

BACKPACK PROJECT SETS RECORD! Many, many thanks to the generous St. Andrew parishioners who donated 97 backpacks to Western Fairfax Chris-tian Ministries for local students in the free and re-duced-price lunch program. Last years' total was 84, so this is definitely a record for us, and more than filled the request to provide 75 packs for Liberty Middle School. The staff at Liberty was so grateful, and so impressed, at the generosity of our members. Bags not needed for Liberty will go directly to WFCM, to fill in requests from other schools. The WFCM coordinator has also thanked St. Andrew pa-rishioners; “Please let everyone know how grateful we are for their love of those in need – they have blessed many students who otherwise would not have been able to purchase a backpack this school year.”
