Parking Lot “Makeover” Complete

The congregation’s decision from our Annual Meeting to repave the parking lot has come to pass as a marvelous improvement in the entire back and side of the church’s space. Midstate Contractors did the work, with the fi-nal billing coming in at $ 30,790.00—well within the range specified by the

contract. Every detail in Council’s list of improvements has been carried out. The lot now drains entirely, leaving no poolings of water (or ice!); the water drains to our storm sewer; and new curbing along the drive-way and back will guide drainage effectively. The painting is up to code for handicapped slots, the driveway has been expanded to afford two lanes of traffic entering and exiting the lot, and the front drive has been wid-ened to permit the parking of a funeral vehicle without blocking the way out. In the back the paving wraps around and between all the structural detail, including new brickwork installed by Tim Byers as part of the

plan. Nice job!

New Nursery to Be Dedicated Sunday, August 18th

An Open-House of our New Nursery will be held after Worship on Sunday, August 18th. Our Nursery is located on the third floor of the Education Building. The New Nursery is dedicated in memory of Joan Caldwell. The mural is a depiction of her favorite hymn “You Have Come Down to the Lakeshore” (ELW 817). It was painted by Caroline Sigmon and Marie Smith. Memorials given in

Joan’s honor were used to purchase new furniture, flooring, and painting supplies. The tile floor was installed by Johnny Hollar. The ceiling and lighting were redone by Woody Lucas, Rufus Moretz, and Eric Setzer. Terry Smith made new cross-stitch illustrations for the room. A new sound system was installed to wirelessly transmit the Worship Service for nursery helpers. Key helpers in the project have been Paula and William Litaker, Linda and Charlie Wiedey, Helen Briggs, & members of the Christian Education Committee.

These petitions are offered as guides to prayer for the global, social and outreach ministries of the church. Thank you for your continued prayers for the life and mission of this church. 1 Pray for the newly elected bishop of the ELCA Lower Susquehanna Synod, the Rev. James S. Dunlop, and for all the newly elected synod bishops as they enter this important role in the life of the ELCA. 2 Pray for the 2012-2013 ELCA Young Adults in Global Mission participants as they transition to new lives after their year of service abroad. 3 Pray for Peace Lutheran Church in Joplin, Mo., as it continues to recover from the May 2011 tornado. The congrega-tion has moved into a new, recently finished building. 4 Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth. Thank you for all that you have created, for the colors of the rainbow, flowers and fields, mountain and sea we give you praise for your creation. 5 Give thanks for the life and ministry of the Rev. Leon A. Phillip Jr. of Allentown, Pa., who died on June 19 at the age of 76. He was the first director of Lutheran Disaster Response and is considered its founder. He oversaw the response to more than 150 disasters. 6 Remember in your prayers ELCA missionaries the Rev. Erik and Tauna Roth and their parish ministry at the Tokyo Lutheran Church. 7 Keep in your prayers all those who are facing a long recovery after the destructive wildfires in Colorado this summer. 8 Pray for the staffs of the many Lutheran summer camps and retreat centers as they continue their summer mission of helping young people grow in their faith as children of God. 9 Remember in your prayers those among the Fulani people of West Africa who have chosen to follow Christianity, no matter what it means for their lives, even if it involves ostracism and persecution. 10 Pray for ELCA missionaries Krystle Moraska-Madrussan and her husband, Ignacio Madrussan, who have begun coordinating the work of ELCA Young Adults in Global Mission participants in Argentina and Uruguay, as well as facili-tating relationships between congregations there and in the U.S. and Canada. 11 Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost O Lord, we pray for all who are travel, especially those who are making their way to the 2013 ELCA Churchwide As-sembly in Pittsburgh. Make their ways safe and keep them in your care; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 12 Pray for ELCA missionary Edna Johnson and her work in healthcare and nursing education in Liberia. 13 Pray for the estimated 4.2 million Syrians who have fled their homes during the civil war but have remained in Syria rather than going to a refugee camp outside the country. ELCA funds are helping some of these people find new homes in their country. 14 Lift up the work of the ELCA Investment Fund and its mission of providing building and renovation loans for congre-gations and other ministries. 15 Mary, Mother of Our Lord Pray for the Lutheran congregations in Puerto Rico, ministering to and supporting mariners and fishermen in the west-ern part of the Caribbean. Pray that all will be protected while at sea. 16 Pray for ELCA World Hunger and its partners as they strive to address food shortages and the root causes of pov-erty that lead to hunger. 17 Give thanks for the service of those attending and organizing the 2013 ELCA Churchwide Assembly, which con-cludes today in Pittsburgh. 18 Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost O Lord our God, we give thanks for all those who are first responders in times of trouble. Sustain those who seek to save others, often putting their own lives at risk; through Jesus Christ, our eternal savior. 19 Keep in your prayers those affected by the devastating late spring tornadoes in Oklahoma as they go down the long road to recovery. 20 Pray for the unity of The Lutheran World Federation and its more than 70 million members — a global communion of churches in the Lutheran tradition. 21 Remember in your prayers the ministry of the Rev. Themba Mkhabela, an ELCA missionary in Ghana and the ELCA’s regional representative in West Africa. 22 Pray for the ELCA’s five companion churches in India, including the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in India and the Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church, as we walk hand in hand with them in a variety of program and projects, such as theological education, women’s ministry and healthcare.

23 Pray for those attending the ELCA Mission Interpreter Coordinator Conference, which begins today in Chicago, that they will be inspired in their work of sharing stories of the ELCA's mission and ministry within their congregations. 24 Bartholomew, Apostle Include in your prayers the ELCA’s partnership with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Papua New Guinea and its three main ministries of evangelism, education and health services. 25 Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost O loving God, we ask for your blessings on the children preparing to go to school for the first time and for all those re-turning to the classroom. Grant them the strength to learn, concentrate, and act in love toward their teachers and class-mates. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen. 26 Lift up in your prayers the ministry of the Rev. Chad and Natalie Rimmer, ELCA missionaries in Senegal. 27 Remember in your prayers ELCA missionaries the Rev. Michael Fonner and Leslie Weed-Fonner and their parish ministry serving the Nairobi International Lutheran Congregation in Kenya. 28 Lift up in your prayers the ELCA Malaria Campaign as it makes a difference in the daily life of many Africans, such as Maria, who received a loan funded by the campaign that allowed her to open a small bakery. She now has the in-come needed to treat malaria in her family and the resources to prevent future cases. 29 As summer winds down, keep in your prayers ELCA primary and secondary schools as well as colleges and semi-naries, as they prepare to open their doors for another school year. 30 Pray for the multicultural ministries of the ELCA and the invitation to an increasingly complex world that “all are wel-come.” 31 Pray for the ELCA-supported Schools for Villages program in the Central African Republic. The program is helping provide

much needed schools in a country with few resources.

Global Missions

Ice Cream Social

Sunday, August 18th - 4:00 pm

Global Missions Committee members continue our tradition of a summertime fellowship to cool

off with delicious dessert and learn together about a part of the global mission of caring

around the world. This year we’ll enjoy a visit from Dr. Jeremy Fisher . Jeremy was born

and raised in Malaysia, the son of Lutheran missionaries. He is a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne

and holds a PhD from Auburn. He is a member of Mt. Olive Lutheran, Hickory and visited Ma-

laysia several years ago. He has co-authored a book about the lives and work of missionaries

who served in Malaysia and Singapore.

Hope you can join us for ice cream and meaningful fellowship on Sunday, August 18th at 4:00pm!

Trinity Ridge Dedication

Because of the generous donations made by St. Andrew’s toward the building of the new Lutheran Home, Trinity Ridge, the dining room is being dedicated in the memory of Pastor Albert H. Keck, Jr. Barbara Keck-Pitts attend the dedication on July 21st.

From the family of Willie Shook:

Dear St. Andrews Family,

Thank you for the beautiful floral arrangement. Seeing many of her church friends con-firmed just how strong her faith truly was, and how involved she had been in many church activities. She truly loved her church family. A special thanks to Ada for the beautiful music that was played at the funer-al, Pastor and Mrs. Whitener for their visits and phone calls, and to the ladies who provided lunch. The love shown to her during her illness was comforting to us, even though she sometimes could not remember each one of you. Thanks again, and God bless all of you. Church Workdays

At the June workday, the stairs to the glen were painted, the vents on the side of the church were painted, poison Ivey was sprayed in the glen area,

and the eternal flame chancel was replaced in the sanctuary.

At the July workday, wallpaper was repaired and reattached in 4 bathrooms, cork strips were put up in the choir room, furniture was removed from Fel-

lowship Hall and Doris’ Day Room in preparation for cleaning the floors, and the outside

porch drain was cleaned.

Love Offering Honoring Barbara Kennedy Our church ‘administrative assistant’ of nearly a dozen years has announced her retirement from

the labors of the Church Office effective August 31st.

Barbara has been extraordinarily faithful to the needs of the congregation’s members, its groups

and its many friends, clients, suppliers and visitors. Such a long tenure maintained with such con-

sistent professional devotion calls for a special way to acknowledge her service in the life of the

church. We are gathering a ‘Love Offering’ to be presented to Barbara at the end of this month as a

token of our affection and esteem.

Please join in as we seek to honor and thank our faithful servant. Donations can be made to the

Church by check or envelope with a memo signifying “Love Offering”. We will need to complete our

gathering of gifts by no later than August 18th! THANKS!

Women in Religion The Women in Religion discussion group will meet Sunday, September 1st at 4 pm in Fel-lowship Hall. The group will begin a discussion of the historic The Woman's Bible, edited by Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Stanton's role in American women's history is noteworthy and her engagement of women scholars of her day in writing The Woman's Bible in 1895 is a

landmark date in women's history. The 1870 revision of the Authorized English Version of the Bible by an all male committee of the Church of England stirred Stanton's ambition to gather women scholars of her day to gather passages from the Bible involving women and to write commentary on those passages. At the September meeting, information will be given about materials to be used in the group's study of The Woman's Bible. Notices will be sent in late August to current members of the discussion group, but all women of all faith groups are invited to attend the discussion group which meets at 4 pm on the first Sunday of each month, September through June, with no meeting in December. For more information contact Mary Thuesen at 327-9551 or [email protected].

Our next meeting will be August 18th at 8:00 a.m.

All men of the church are invited to our meetings every

third Sunday of the month for breakfast, fellowship and a program.
