Father Doyle

“By calling God ‘Father’…the language of faith thus draws on the human experience of parents, who are in a way the first representatives of God…” (CCC, 239) Parents today face many challenges. In addition to providing the basics for their families—food, clothing, shelter, etc.—most parents do what they can so that their children might have a full life with many opportunities. These are not always easy tasks. Add to that the often-unrealistic expectations that society puts on them regarding their children and home life, and parents find themselves in an understandably unenviable position. Not to add more to that parental burden, but the Catechism notes another role that parents have: they are the “first representatives of God” to their families. In other words, children first experience the presence and love of God through the presence and love of their parents. Subliminally, kids develop their picture of God based on how their parents treat them, treat each other, and treat their neighbors. This role is particularly weighty in light of those other pressures. But being God’s “representative” need not be entirely burdensome. After all, God will not give us a cross that He will not help us carry. As the CCC notes, God Himself is a “parent,” and so moms and dads can find in Him a model of parenthood—both fatherhood and motherhood (cf. CCC, 239). Therefore, parents can look to Him as an inspiration and source of encouragement for fulfilling their tasks — not just their task as His representative but also in all of their challenges. This can be “good news” for many parents, for not everyone possesses happy memories of parents to which they can look for inspiration. As the CCC puts it, “Human parents are fallible and can disfigure the face of fatherhood and motherhood.” To whom, then, can they look to discover how to handle the pressures of parenthood? Again, the CCC: “God transcends the human distinction.” In other words, human parents make mistakes; God our Father does not. Parenthood is not an easy task. Parents are subject to many expectations and standards, both personal and societal, that make raising children and forming a family pressure-filled. But, our Faith encourages parents to look to our Father for inspiration and strength, as a model of what they should strive for Regardless of their own personal history of parental success or failure, parents can find in Him a father-figure who can show them how to conquer those challenges.
