FIFTH ANNUAL “LIFE CHAIN”
SUNDAY OCTOBER 6
A Life Chain is a peaceful – prayerful public witness for our nation to end legalized abortion in our country. It is a visual statement of solidarity by participants who oppose abortion. About seven neighboring parishes will participate again this year: St. Ansgar, St. Hubert, St. John the Evangelist, St. Marcelline, St. Mathew, St. Peter Damian and Church of the Holy Spirit. Annually, on the first Sunday in October, National Life Chain invites Christians in every town across America to stand along streets, hold inoffensive signs opposing abortion, while praying for about one hour. It is time we stand up for children. Plan to gather in the corner of East Ave. & Irving Park Rd. at 2:30, select a sign of your choice, and walk to our designated location along Irving Park Road. We will be there until 4:00PM. Invite your family members, relatives and friends to join. Bring along a lawn chair for comfort.
As in the past all are invited back to St. Ansgar’s Meeting hall for coffee, hot chocolate, and numerous treats. This is a wonderful time.

There is no Christian without Jesus. And Jesus is not present if a “Christian” listens to commands that do not lead to him or do not come from him. Pope Francis, at Mass on Saturday, 7 September, at Santa Marta insisted on the Christocentric nature of our faith. And he warned Christians not to follow private revelations unless they lead to Christ. The Gospel passage that day (Lk 6:1-5) told of Jesus with the pharisees, who were criticizing the apostles for having violated the sabbath by picking the heads of grain and eating them. In this passage Jesus, the Pontiff said, “says: I am the Lord, Lord also of the sabbath. In another part he will, the sabbath was made for man and not man for the sabbath. His centrality is also the Christian’s centrality in regard to many things. Jesus is the core, he is Lord”. This “we don’t understand very well”, because “it is not easy to understand”. We only know that “he is the Lord”, his is “the power, the glory, the victory. He alone is Lord”. Citing the Letter of St Paul to the Colossians (1:21-23) the Holy Father talked about what the Apostle said: that Jesus reconciled us “in his body of flesh by his death — he reconciled us all — in order to present you holy and blameless and irreproachable before him; provided that you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast”. Jesus is the centre and he regenerates us and grounds us in faith. But “the pharisees instead put the law at the centre of their religiosity. And Jesus says: they are laying burdens on people’s shoulders”. If Jesus is not at the centre, the Pontiff said, “other things are”. And today “we encounter
many Christians without Christ. For example, those like the Pharisees, Christians who put their faith, their religiosity, their Christianity, in laws: I must do this, I must do that. They are Christians out of habit”, but in fact, “they do not know why they do it”. Pope Francis wondered: “Where is Jesus?”. There are so many Christians without Christ, like those “who seek out only devotions, but no Jesus. There is something missing, my brother! Jesus is missing. If your devotions lead you to Jesus, then they are good. But if they leave you where you are, then something is wrong”. There is another group of “Christians without Christ: those who seek out novelties, special things, they seek out private revelations”, though revelation was fulfilled with the New Testament. The Holy Father warned these Christians against the desire to go “to some kind of revelation spectacle, to feel new things. Take up the Bible instead!”. What then is the rule for being a Christian with Christ? And what is the “sign” that someone is in fact a Christian with Christ? It is simple, the Pope explained: “whatever leads you to Jesus is valid, and only what comes from Jesus is valid. Jesus is the centre”. And the “sign”, he said, is “a man or a woman who adores Jesus is a Christian with Jesus. If you can’t worship Jesus, something is missing”. The rule is to “follow what comes from Jesus and to do what leads to Jesus. The sign is adoration of Jesus, prayer and adoration before Jesus”.

No hay cristiano sin Jesús. Y Jesús no está cuando el cristiano responde a mandamientos que no llevan a Cristo o no vienen de Cristo. El Papa Francisco, en la misa que celebró el 7 de septiembre, insistió en la centralidad de Cristo. Y puso en guardia a los cristianos respecto de seguir revelaciones privadas, pues la revelación —dijo— concluyó con Cristo. En la homilía el Santo Padre prosiguió con la reflexión que la víspera había propuesto de las lecturas en las que Jesús es presentado como el esposo de la Iglesia. En el pasaje evangélico del día, de Lucas (6, 1-5), se narra el episodio de la discusión de Jesús con los fariseos, que reprochan a los apóstoles haber violado el descanso del sábado arrancando y comiendo espigas de trigo. En este pasaje del Evangelio, Jesús —observó el Pontífice— se presenta como algo más respecto a la víspera «y dice: Yo soy el Señor, el Señor también del sábado. En otra parte dirá: el sábado se hizo para el hombre, y no el hombre para el sábado. La centralidad de Él y también la centralidad del cristiano respecto a muchas cosas. Jesús es el centro, es el Señor». Una definición que —notó el Papa— «no entendemos bien», porque «no es fácil de entender». Lo cierto es que Jesús «es el Señor» en cuanto que es Quien «tiene el poder, la gloria, quien tiene la victoria. Es el único Señor». Citando la carta de san Pablo a los Colosenses (1, 21-23) el Santo Padre apuntó también que es precisamente el apóstol quien recuerda que Jesús nos «ha reconciliado en el cuerpo de su carne mediante la muerte —nos ha reconciliado a todos nosotros— para presentaros santos, inmaculados e irreprochables ante Él; a fin de que permanezcáis cimentados y firmes en la fe». Jesús —sintetizó el Papa— es el centro que nos regenera y nos funda en la fe. En cambio «los fariseos —continuó— ponían en el centro de su religiosidad mu-chos mandamientos. Y Jesús dice de ellos: Imponen cargas en los hombros de la gente». Si no está Jesús en el centro, «hay otras cosas», advirtió el Santo Padre. Y en el día de hoy «encontramos a muchos cristianos sin Cristo, sin Jesús. Por ejemplo,
quienes tienen la enfermedad de los fariseos y son cristianos que ponen su fe y su religiosidad, su cristiandad, en muchos mandamientos: ¡Ah! Debo hacer esto, debo hacer lo otro. Cristianos de actitudes»: o sea, que hacen cosas —explicó— porque se tienen que hacer, pero en realidad «no saben por qué lo hacen». Pero «¿Jesús dónde está?», se preguntó el Papa Francisco. Que continuó: «Un mandamiento es válido si viene de Jesús». Cristianos sin Cristo hay muchos, como los que «buscan sólo devociones, muchas devociones, pero Jesús no está. ¡Y entonces te falta algo, hermano! Te falta Jesús. Si tus devociones te llevan a Jesús, entonces bien. Pero si te quedas ahí, entonces algo no marcha». Después está «otro grupo de cristianos sin Cristo: los que buscan cosas un poco raras, un poco especiales, los que van detrás de las revelaciones privadas», mientras que la Revelación se concluyó con el Nuevo Testamento. El Papa advirtió en estos cristianos el deseo de ir «al espectáculo de la revelación, a oír cosas nuevas». Pero —es la exhortación que el Pontífice les hace— «¡toma el Evangelio!». Entre los cristianos sin Cristo mencionó también «a los que se perfuman el alma, pero no tienen virtudes porque no tienen a Jesús». ¿Cuál es entonces la regla para ser cristiano con Cristo? ¿Y cuál es el «signo» de que una persona es un cristiano con Cristo? Se trata de una «regla —aclaró el Santo Padre— muy sencilla: es válido sólo lo que te lleva a Jesús, y sólo es válido lo que viene de Jesús. Jesús es el centro, el Señor, como Él mismo dice». A propósito del «signo», dijo: «Es un signo sencillo el del ciego de nacimiento del que habla el Evangelio de Juan en el capítulo noveno. El Evangelio dice que se postró ante Él para adorar a Jesús. Un hombre o una mujer que adora a Jesús es un cristiano con Jesús. Pero si tú no consigues adorar a Jesús, algo te falta». He aquí «una regla y un signo», concluyó el Pontífice: «La regla es: soy un buen cristiano, estoy en el camino del buen cristiano, si hago lo que viene de Jesús o me lleva a Jesús porque Él es el centro. El signo es la adoración ante Jesús, la oración de adoración ante Jesús».
