From the Desk of Father Ed

Feast of the Holy Family Dec 27th

, 2020 Again a Blessed and Merry Christmas to all from all of us at Saint Anthony’s. My Dear Parishioners, As we celebrate the great solemnity of Christmas, we recognize that “Emmanuel”, Our God is with us. This year we especially pray for an end to the pandemic. We know this has been an especially difficult time for each of you during this pandemic. My prayer is that the Prince of Peace be with you and those you love this Christmas Season to re-invigorate and heal all of us! May Christ bring Peace to our Nation and our World. We truly appreciate your Christmas offerings, Flower offerings, Novena offerings, and all you do for our parish, our Outreach program and our St. Vincent DePaul Conference here at St Anthony’s. FYI, if you want to start contributing on-line, please go to the parish website. You can click on parish and on-line giving for donations as well. St. Anthony’s Parish has a great history of generosity. This year it is so very much appreciated. During this critical time, we have provided assistance to those who have asked for help. Let us know if you need help! We certainly appreciate your continued generosity this Christmas, which will assist us in serving you. May Emmanuel, Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, bring you joy and His love this Christmas and may His blessings be upon you especially for good health in the New Year.

May I extend these Christmas greetings to you,

announcing again as the angel announced more than

two-thousand years ago: “Glory to God in the highest

and peace to His people on earth!”

I want to thank all of you who tried to help us with social

distancing during the Christmas Masses. I especially

want to thank Freddie Leonardo, the ushers, and the

lectors and Eucharistic ministers, and Peggy Rupnick

and Phil Sweeney, and all who helped us to coordinate

the logistics for these Masses. A special word of thanks

to Bill Margiotta and our Music Ministry cantors, organ-

ists, choir for all their beautiful voices!

Future Youth and Parish Planning: As I mentioned last week, in working through the pandemic, we need to make some important decisions for our youth in the faith that we all cherish. We would like to strengthen and grow our youth group with its great tradition here at St. Anthony’s parish. Over the years, the youth group has been active at the Sunday evening Mass. In discussing this with our priests and staff and also with our neighboring pastors, we are looking to develop a regional youth experience for our young people building on our youth group here at St. Anthony’s. In order to support this new initiative, as of Sunday January 24

th, the evening Mass on Sunday will be

moved from 7pm till 5pm. This will also allow us to have the Youth involved in activities and meetings after the 5pm Mass. The 7pm Mass has been sparsely attended over a long period of time, so we hope the move to 5pm will also encourage more parishioners and especially our youth to attend the Mass at 5pm. I ask your cooperation and your patience as we try to do what is best for our youth and our parish. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation. Hail and Blessed be the hour and the moment in which the Son of God was born of the most pure Virgin Mary at Midnight in Bethlehem in piercing cold. In that hour vouchsafe oh my God to hear my prayer and grant my desire through the merits of our Savior Jesus Christ and his Blessed Mother. Amen. (Prayer to Obtain Special Favor/Novena to St Andrew from Nov 30th till Christmas)

Prayers for a Healthy Happy and Holy New Year.

Isn't There Anyone Who Knows What Christmas is All About? -Charlie Brown

The best explanation I ever heard was the one Linus gave to Charlie Brown...

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were so afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior,

which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; You shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on Earth peace, good will toward men.'" Gospel of Luke, [King James Version]

We want to thank all of you who support us in everything we do. It is with your generous help that we can do God's work. We wish all our parishioners a very Blessed Christmas Season and a Spirit-filled New Year.

St. Anthony’s Peanut Butter & Jelly/Mission Gang Our next PBJ/Mission Gang will meet Saturday, January 2nd in the lower church. Everyone must e-mail RSVP if you would like to help us. Please arrive by 8:50am. We end by 10:30.

Children—Family—Faith Formation

The Holy Family of Jesus Mary and Joseph Holy Gospel of St. Luke 2:22-40

The time came for Joseph and Mary to perform

the ceremony of purification, as the Law of

Moses commanded. So, they took the child to

Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, as it is written

in the law of the Lord: “Every first-born male is to be dedicated to the

Lord.” They also went to offer a sacrifice of a pair of doves or two young

pigeons, as required by the law of the Lord. When Joseph and Mary had

finished doing all that was required by the law of the Lord, they re-

turned to their hometown of Nazareth.

The child grew and became strong; he was full of wisdom, and God's

grace was upon him.

Hello! God’s Children! Jesus’ parents, Mary, and Joseph took Jesus to

the Temple, to present Him to God as was their custom. Then they

took Him home again and it is at home He grew strong, smarter, and

learned the art of a loving relationship. Jesus was a human child just

like you. He grew up in a family and a Jewish community. He had a hunger to know God more and

more.

Children! You are blessed with a family, and a community of St. Anthony of Padua.

It is a place of belonging – a place to be nurtured and loved and given strength

and encouragement to grow and become the person God created you to be. You

can learn wisdom and responsibility by imitation and correction. They will teach

and encourage you. Be thankful for them. Love them. Listen to them. Imitate

them. Help them.

Dear Jesus, thank you for bestowing upon our family a new, fresh year, help us to grow like you

and makes us new.

In this new year: May the Lord Jesus

bless you with love, fun, wisdom,

happiness, and good health.

Christmas Flower Envelopes: OOPS! - It appears the Christmas Flower offering envelopes were not in some of the mailings you received with the Christmas Schedule and Greetings! This is an important envelope for the parish. It also gives all an opportunity to memorialize loved ones. In January we will be listing all the contributions to the flowers which decorate St. Anthony’s church and a list

of those memorialized at Christmas. It is a beautiful way to bring our loved ones to mind during this season of Love at Christmas! Please consider using these Christmas flower envelopes. It will make a difference!

Christmas Novena- What is a Novena and what is the significance of a novena?

A novena is a nine-day period of private or public prayer to obtain special

graces, and to implore special favors, or make special petitions. A novena is

an ancient tradition of devotional praying in Christianity consisting of private

or public prayers repeated for nine successive days or weeks. Traditionally

here at St Anthony’s there have been these Christmas Novena of Masses

offered from Christmas Day through January 2nd

. There are Spiritual

Bouquet cards which can be used to remember our loved ones during the

Christmas season. You can find them throughout the Church. When you fill

in your loved ones names with a donation, please leave them in the collection or special box

provided in the church. They will be placed in the sanctuary as a sign of our prayers for those

who have gone before us!

Online Giving: Please consider making an automatic contribution each week to the parish. You can do so by going to the parish website: Saintanthonyofpadua.org. Click on parish and then go to Online giving to create an account. You will have the option to make a one time or recurring donation. Thanks so much for considering this important option.

Thanks for all you offer to Saint Anthony of Padua parish. It truly makes a difference! God Bless you!

A special thank you to Bishop Luis Romero for coming out to our parish to celebrate the Spanish Mass this past Sunday, December 20. Bishop Romero (Most Reverend Luis Miguel Romero Fernández) has the uniquely fitting assignment of Vicar (representative) to the Spanish speaking congregations of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. He was originally ordained a priest in Spain, later serving 25 years in Latin America including as the head of a large university and the head of an organization of Latin American universities. We are highly honored to have him here on Long Island and to have him spend a morning in prayer with us. Feliz Navidad!
