OUR MISSIONSaint Anthony of Padua Parish is a welcoming, loving Catholic community, centered in Christ and guided by the Holy Spirit.
Together we celebrate the liturgy in prayer and sacrament; we educate our children and adults in the faith; we support and reach out to those in need.
We believe the Holy Spirit is calling us to con-tinue: to love one another as Jesus loves us, to share the word of God and to serve both within and beyond our Parish family.

Dear Msgr. Joe Mirro and all parishioners of St Anthony of Padua: On behalf of St. John’s Mission Church- Nyagisozi, Kabale Diocese -Uganda, I am so happy to inform you that St John Mission Church Clinic construction is almost done. We are left with some internal finishing, solar panels, medical supplies and hopefully we shall be ready to provide ser-vices to the poor people of Nyagisozi. I am so grateful for your generosity toward the completion of this health center which I really call a miracle from your generosity. Christians and priests of St. John’s Mission Church are very grateful for your love and generosity toward this life saving project. It is the greatest Christmas gift they will have from you. Together in charity we can make a difference.

Do you know someone who died from an Opioid overdose?
Recently, our Outreach director, Karen Humphreys and I have been meeting with Catholic priests, Protestant clergy, Rabbis, school officials and service groups from the East Northport, Northport and Huntington areas to try to do something about the many deaths from opioid overdoses. Each of us has a story of loss to this tragedy.
If you, or someone you know, would like to join in our effort to do something please let me know. We are still in the listening and planning stages. Your participation can help us to develop and effectively plan to help to prevent this in the future.
Whether you are personally affected or not, but would like to help, please let me know. You can call me at 516 (631) 261- 1077, send an email to [email protected] or write me at 20 Cheshire Place, East North-port, NY 11731.
Even if you can’t help, please pray for those afflicted. Thanks

ROCKVILLE CENTRE – December 9, 2016 – Pope Francis today appointed Most Reverend John O. Barres, 56, Bishop of the Diocese of Allentown, Pennsylvania, to serve as the fifth Bishop of Rockville Centre. He succeeds Bishop William Murphy, 76, who has led the Dio-cese of Rockville Centre since 2001.
The appointment was made public in Washington, December 9, 2016 by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States.
Bishop-designate Barres will assume leadership of the Diocese during a Mass of In-stallation at the Cathedral of Saint Agnes on January 31, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. Until that time, Bishop Murphy will serve as Apostolic Administrator.
“It is my deep conviction that he will be a Bishop for all of us without exception,” said Bishop William Murphy in a statement today. “He has shared with me his love of youth and his care for the elderly. He has a keen sense of parish life and has a special expertise in education. He has a deep love for the poor and will support Catholic Charities, parish out-reach as well as Catholic hospitals on Long Island. He will be a good neighbor to our brothers and sisters of the Christian Churches, our Jewish and Muslim friends and the many civic and political leaders with whom he will work in building up Long Island for future generations. Above all he is a man of prayer, both the prayer of the Church through Eucharist and the sacraments as well as the many devotions of our Catholic tradition, especially the Blessed Virgin and St. Agnes,” said Bishop Murphy.
Pope Francis Names Diocese of Allentown Bishop John O. Barres As Fifth Bishop of Diocese of Rockville Centre

DECEMBER 18th, 2016 4thSUNDAY OF ADVENT
“She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus.” Jo-seph heard these prophetic words in a dream. They were words of anticipation, of what was to come. And in a sense, they ushered in a kind of Advent for Joseph. With this divine message, Joseph began a period of holy wait-ing. He now knew that the Messiah was going to be com-ing into his own home, and he had just nine months to prepare! We can only imagine how Joseph might have spent these precious days. Most likely he did more than prepare a physical home for his soon-to-be-born Son; he must have also used these days to prepare his heart, mind, and soul for such a tremendous mission.
Today, we stand in a position not all that different from St. Joseph. We also know that the Messiah will be arriv-ing--not just in remembrance at Christmastime, but in re-ality at the second coming. But unlike Joseph, we don’t have an exact timeframe. We don’t know when Jesus will return. We just know that we need to be ready!
During the season of Advent we are challenged to recall this fact and strive to get our hearts in order. The days are short now until Christmas, and for all we know they might be short until Christ’s return as well. What remains to be done? Aside from wrapping presents and planning parties, where do we yet need to tidy up our habits to properly celebrate the real meaning of this festive season? How can we make sure that we don’t get swept away in the external preparations, forgetting the work that needs to be done in the invisible silence of our souls?
God may not speak to all of us directly in our dreams, but he does speak to us clearly through his word. May we recognize today the mission He has laid before us.

My good deed for this week:
Sacrificial Giving 2016
I donated food. I bought a toy for a child in need. I did chores and then do‐nated my money.I fed and cleaned my dog. I helped mom clean up din‐ner dishes. I kept my cousin happy at dinner. I put up all the Christmas decorations by myself. I cleaned up all my toys.
Did We Take a Step?
When he discovered that Mary was with child, Joseph resolved to end their engagement with as little disgrace as possible.
But obedient to the voice of God, he changed those plans and became instead protector of the child Jesus and His mother Mary.

TAXES AND GIVING AT CHRISTMAS
AND YEAR'S END
Did you know that "charitable giving" is one of only a few tax provisions that was not greatly impacted by recent federal tax legislation. Many people enjoy using Christmas and years end as a special time to give to their fa-vorite Catholic institutions and also positively impact their federal
and state income taxes. Christmas and year -end giving provides many advantages to you, the donor. • All gifts made on or before December 31 are tax deductible for the tax year in which your gift is made. • A last reminder to make that special gift or increased gift that you've wanted to make during the year. • If you are an itemizer, your gift will lessen your tax liability for the tax year in which your gift is made. • If you are not an itemizer, your Christmas gift may be just the right decision to allow you to itemize and lower your tax bill (check with your tax advisor) . • "Carry Over Deduction," depending on your age, income and the size of your gift, you may be able to "carry over" your charita-ble gift tax deduction to subsequent years. Most importantly, make a return to God of your blessings at Christmas and assist our Catholic goals: serving God’s people through our parish.
METHODS OF GIVING Many different, exciting and thought provoking forms of Christmas and year end giving are available, all of which are tax deductible. GIVING SECURITIES ••• . . . is perhaps the best way to make a Catholic gift of faith. You can save and give at the same time! Stocks, bonds, and even shares in mutual funds that have appreciated can be given and your de-duction is for the full market value at the time the gift is made - not just your original cost for the securities. You can also save by paying no capital gains tax on the sale of the stock as you would if you sold the stock and held the cash. DEPRECIATED SECURITIES? You can sell stock that has declined in a down market and claim that loss on your tax return. Then, donate the cash from the sale of the stock and, of course, claim a charitable deduction on your tax return for the amount of the gift. A professional stock broker can assist you in making this type of gift. CASH - the most standard and familiar way to make a Christmas or year end gift. Simply write a check to make your gift. PROPERTY - both real estate and personal property qualify as charitable gifts that would benefit your parish through Christmas and year end giving. Consider real estate such as residences, farmland and buildings as
well as antiques, jewelry, artwork/coin collections, or other collecti-bles. BUSINESS GIFTS - businesses can make gifts and receive tax deduc-tions as well. Businesses can give gifts of inventory, equipment, materi-als and service as well as cash. If you own your own business, giving through your business is another way to benefit your parish and posi-tively impact your taxes. LIFE INSURANCE ~ cash value in current or paid up life insurance policies can benefit our Catholic parish. Of course, naming our Catho-lic parish as a beneficiary of life insurance proceeds can be a wonderful means of making a future major gift to "give the gift ... " You may even designate policy dividends as gifts. MATCHING GIFTS If you are an employee or a participating retiree of a company or cor-poration with a «matching gifts program," you can make such a gift to Parish outreach or Trinity Regional R.C. School. Check with your employer.
YOUR CHRISTMAS CHECKLIST • Do you have us on your Christmas gift list? • All gifts made on or before December 31 are tax deductible for this tax year. • Gifts of securities (stocks, bonds, mutual funds) are some of the best gifts to make whether they have appreciated or depreciated in value. • A charitable contribution may just be the right decision to enable you to itemize your taxes, if you don't already. • Check with a broker about avoiding a last minute rush for year end gifts of securities. • Potential tax law changes may make a gift this year even better than next year. • Know that our prayers and thoughts will be with you at Christmas and all the year round. Call us whenever we can be of help. We are all given just a few short years to "Build up the Kingdom." Thomas A. Judge Knights of Columbus
Fr. Thomas A. Judge Knights of Columbus …
Did you Know? St. Francis made the first Nativity Scene
Nativity scenes, also called manger scenes or creches, have been a popular Advent and Christmas decoration for homes, parishes, and public places for hundreds of years. And, did you know, it originated with a Catholic saint? St. Francis of Assisi had a special devotion to the Child Jesus, and he is credited with creating the first nativity scene on Christmas Eve of the year 1223. He recreated the scene of Christ's birth in a special service and Mass he held inside of a cave, inviting both his fellow friars and the townspeople to join in the celebration. St. Francis set up an empty manger (the feeding trough of farm animals which served as Jesus' crib) inside a cave, and even included a live ox and donkey beside the man-ger just as it was on that first Christmas night. Through these visual aids he wanted everyone to impress more deeply into their understanding how Christ came into the world in such poverty and simplicity. This was a typical perspective of St. Francis' unique charism of simple, poverty-centered spirituality. (Source: www. CatholicCompany.com
You can help share the Christmas message by setting up a Nativity scene outside your home or business to celebrate the true meaning of the season.
The Fr. Thomas A. Judge K of C council also has "Keep Christ in Christmas" Nativity magnets available in the Rectory for a small donation of $5.00 each.
If you would like more information or wish to be part of our ever-growing Fr. Judge K of C family, or rent our hall for any occasion, please let me know. Richard Ronde, Grand Knight (631) 889-3026 [email protected]

Parish Calendar
Oplatki, A Polish Christmas Tradition The tradition of the Oplatki originated in Poland during Early Christian times. This Christmas Custom began with a simple white wafer, baked from flour & water. Wafers are wonderfully designed to display Christmas images, such as the Nativity.
HOW TO CELEBRATE THE OPLATKI TRADITION The Oplatki are enjoyed by families, typically right before the Christmas Eve meal. The entire family will gather around the table with the Oplatek. Generally the eldest member of the family will begin the ritual by breaking off a piece of the wafer and passing it to another family member with a blessing. This blessing can simply con-sist of what you desire for your loved one in the upcoming year – whether it be good health, success, or happiness. The purpose of this act is primarily to express ones unconditional love and forgiveness for each member of his or her family. THE SYMBOLISM The significance of the Oplatki Christmas wafer is in that it shadows the Eucharistic meal that Catholics partici-pate in at each Mass. Just as we share in the Eucharist as one family in Christ and receive Christ’s love through the Eucharist, the Oplatki allows for one’s immediate family to come together and share the love they have for one another. This symbolism is deepened by the fact that the name of the town where Jesus Christ was born, Bethlehem, means "House of Bread," which makes the Oplatki tradition an especially beautiful way to celebrate the charity and unity so characteristic of the Christmas season. YES, EVEN FOR FAMILY PETS! Although this tradition is primarily enjoyed by the human members of the family, even the family pets can partake in this meal. Traditionally, this corresponds to the animals that were the first to greet Christ at his birth. In cur-rent times, this can also represent the important role that pets play in the family. A SYMBOL OF FAMILY UNITY The Oplatki tradition is one that is easy, fun, and deeply meaningful to introduce to the family anytime during the long Christmas season. All it requires is a simple wafer paired with love and affection, and the willingness to share it. This is a heart-warming tradition that will complete your fam-ily’s time together during the Christmas season.
Oplatki are available at the rectory office
