Ministers take Holy Communion to

parishioners unable to attend Mass.

ST. ANTHONY of PADUA Catholic Church and School

July 7, 2019 Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Our parish is a culturally inclusive Catholic community brought together by our common faith in Jesus Christ. Our Mission is to evangelize, educate, serve,

and love one another as God loves us.”

“The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.…” For more than

three years, our parish was blessed to have three priests. We did not even

have the experience of what it would be like to have a dearth of priests. Now,

we only have one priest and we truly feel the need for more vocations to the

priesthood and religious life.

Christian tradition identifies the twelve apostles with ordained ministry

of the church. When at the last supper Jesus commissioned his followers to

“do this in memory of me,” He was addressing the twelve, the clergy. The

sending of the seventy two, therefore, is the commissioning of lay faithful. This

reminds us of the mission we inherit from Christ through our baptism. We are

all workers of the Vineyard. We are all missionaries. We are all prophets. We

are all called to proclaim the good news.

“The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.…” Jesus wants us to

be aware of the need, the ongoing hiring for workers. He is asking us to pray

for more vocations and to pray that many will respond to the need of the

different ministries and apostolates in the church. “Therefore ask the Lord of

the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” This is exactly what we are

doing before we begin the mass. We pray for more vocations.

“The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.…” Jesus is not only

asking us to pray, but He is also inviting us to participate. He is asking us to

pray for more volunteers and to be one of the volunteers. So, what ministry

are you in?

“God is good!”

Last Week’s Question: July 11th is

the Memorial of St. Benedict. What major role did St. Benedict play in the history of the Catholic Church?

Ask...The Stewards

Praise God who has written your name in the heav-ens, and empowered you to conquer sin and death! Jesus has revealed himself to you, and placed you in the protection of the Lord. The enemy cannot harm you, as you go out into the world to share the gospel of our Lord. Sometimes we let fear take hold, and we forget that nothing can tear us from the arms of the Lord.

THIS WEEK’S Stewardship Challenge: In this weeks gospel, Jesus says, "Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves." Luke 10:3 Sometimes, it is a challenge, and sometimes it is a joy, but it is always our duty to share the love and joy of the gospel with others. May you be guided by the Holy Spirit to help those in need of God's love and salvation. “Peace and mercy be to all.”

Answer: Benedict founded twelve communities for

monks in Italy in the 6th Century, including the largest at

Monte Cassino. Benedict's main achievement, the "Rule

of Saint Benedict", contains a set of rules for his monks to

follow, centered on the principal of “Ora et Labora” (“pray

and work”). Because his Rule became one of the most

influential standards for monastic life in Europe, Benedict

is often called the “Founder of Western Christian Monasti-

cism.” His twin sister was Saint Scholastica, who adapted

Benedict’s Rule for use with women desiring a similar life-

style.

Next Week’s Question: Rev. Claude DuTeil, at one time

rector of St. Christopher Episcopal Church, our neighbors

up the road, is often informally called “the patron saint of

Honolulu's street people.” Why?

A Brief History of our Crucifix

On the morning of January 22, 1933, the very first Mass was held in the original St. Anthony of Padua church

(now St. Anthony’s Kindergarten classroom). An earlier crucifix was placed behind the altar in the sanctuary. 20

years later, the small church could no longer support the rapidly growing parish and on July 23, 1955, the first

Mass was held in what today is our Parish Hall. At that time, the crucifix was behind the altar in the sanctuary.

After the dedication of this new church, the Pali Highway opened, and with it came rapid population growth in

the sleepy village of Kailua. It became quickly apparent that this second structure was unable to support the

overflowing congregation at Sunday Mass.

Construction began on a larger place of worship in the mid-1960s and on Easter Sunday in 1968, the first Mass

was celebrated in the present-day church. Once again, the crucifix was behind the altar and was the focal point

of our worship. Tragically, during the early hours of July 24, 1982, a fire broke out in the church destroying most

(but not all) of the structure. The present-day crucifix that hung above the altar was severely burned almost be-

yond recognition. Restoration of the church began soon thereafter and services were once again held in the Par-

ish Hall (the previous church structure). The first Mass in the renovated church was offered on March 24, 1984.

Meanwhile, the crucifix underwent a chemical treatment that solidified the charred, blackened wood, saving it

from ruin. Thanks to the expertise of key individuals the magnificent crucifix was saved. Six years after the fire,

on October 16, 1988, the crucifix was returned to the present-day church and hung on the wall by the baptismal

font.

Under the leadership of Fr. Exsequel Tuyor and Jimmy Gomes - the head of the Planning, Building, and Mainte-

nance Committee, countless hours were devoted to discussions with parishioners to plan for the eventual return

of the crucifix to the sanctuary. With the blessing of Bishop Larry, the arduous physical work to return the cruci-

fix to the sanctuary began on March 7, 2019. And, on March 21st, 37 years after the fire, our beloved crucifix

was returned to its rightful place in the sanctuary behind the altar.

On Saturday, July 6th, Bishop Larry will bless the crucifix at the 5pm Mass.

We thank our Lord for guiding the workers and volunteers who planned the renovation and the relocation of the

crucifix. Without the support of our parishioners and the dedication of the many volunteers, this formidable task

would not have been possible. We also thank the Most Reverend Bishop Larry for his support as we carried out

this endeavor. Our beloved crucifix is once again at the center of our sanctuary and the focal point as we enter

our place of our worship.

God is good all the time!

St. Anthony’s Annual Community Garage Sale takes place on Saturday, July 27th, 8am-1pm. The donation for a 10x10 spot is $20. Set up time starts at 6am that morning.

To reserve a 10x10 spot please call Audrey at 753-6052 or Valerie at 266-2227.

On the fourth Sunday, the Ohana Fellowship Ministry creates a spirit of fellowship after Mass as they put out donuts, pastries, and cof-fee on the Friendship Lanai for all to enjoy.

Please consider helping out on the fourth Sunday.

Contact Pat Tom at 261-8104 to find out how

you can help.

St. Anthony’s is partnering with the Blood Bank of Hawaii by hosting a blood drive on Sunday, July 21st, in the Parish Hall from 7:15am—1pm. Everyday someone in Hawaii needs blood. Since blood cannot be manufactured outside the body, donors play a vital role in the health of our state. Hawaii needs about 200 volunteer donors eve-ry day. Are you tough enough for the challenge to save someone’s life?

Please call the Blood Bank at 848-4770 to make an appoint-ment; we also accept walk-ins during the blood drive. Just walk

in to the Parish Hall on July 21st between 7:15am to 1pm.

Our goal is to have at least 25 people from St. Anthony’s do-nate blood. Are you up to the challenge?

Thank you for helping us save lives!
