DIOCESAN EVENTS

RESPECT LIFE CORNER “Even all the hairs of your head are counted.” In Matthew’s Gospel, we learn that God is hands-on,

with us moment by moment; even counting all of our hairs! We are encouraged to “be not afraid” -we

are priceless in God’s eyes. But we must be able to talk about God. Say His name. Don’t shy away

from bringing up all the good things God has done in your life. He is working for your good. It is our

job to work for the good of others by acknowledging Christ and His work in our lives to those people

in our life. Failure to do that can separate us from Him. Learn, Act, Connect and Pray- We must

know that one day we will stand on our own before the Father. We will hear Him say, “This one is my

faithful disciple, or this one is not mine.” Let’s pray and vow daily to be faithful to God and to the

unique mission for which God formed us in the womb. God has a plan for us all!

DIOCESE OF BELLEVILLE LAUNCHES PROJECT RACHEL

A few weeks ago, Project Rachel was relaunched as an active ministry in the Diocese of Belleville!!! While we have been home under our stay at home orders, Planned Parenthood has continued to see women (some report one woman every 20 minutes six days a week). It is so vital that we be there for these women to offer free and confidential help in their time of need. It is our hope to continue to foster a sense of compassion in our communities making them a safe place to welcome those who suffer after an abortion and encourage reconciliation and healing in Jesus Christ. Those in need of help and counseling can confidentially contact someone by phone or email. Here’s a link to Project Rachel on the diocesan website with additional information: https://www.diobelle.org/respectlife/project-rachel.

Thank you to the Knights of Columbus for purchasing a new refrigerator for the kitchen in the Rectory. We appreciate your generosity in this purchase prior to Fr. Von moving in to the Rectory later in June! Thank you also to Alice & Walter Krysnoski for the purchase of a smaller refrigerator to be located on the Breezeway between Church & the Rectory. This comes in handy for storing the wine & hosts.

St. Augustine’s appreciates your kindness in making these purchases!!!!

The First Luminous Mystery

THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD

1. John is baptizing in the Jordan proclaiming a baptism of

repentance.

2. "I am the voice of one crying in the desert, make straight the way

of the Lord."

3. "One mightier than I is coming after me."

4. "I have baptized you with water, He will baptize you with the Holy

Spirit."

5. Seeing Jesus, John exclaims: "Behold the Lamb of God."

6. Against protests of his unworthiness, John baptizes Jesus in the

Jordan.

7. After Jesus' baptism a voice from Heaven: "This is my beloved

Son in whom I am well pleased."

8. The Spirit descends upon Jesus in the form of a dove.

9. In this heavenly manifestation the sacrament of baptism is

prefigured.

10. The divine Trinity is manifested: the voice of the Father is heard as

the Spirit descends upon the Son.

Spiritual Fruit: Let us pray for the unity of our nation. As we

prepare to celebrate our nation's independence, let us remember

that God created all people in his likeness and gives us the freedom

to choose to follow his will, following the example of Jesus.

Life in Christ – from The Catechism of the Catholic Church Last week, we saw that Jesus has won for us the grace we need to use our freedom to choose to follow the will of God rather than to choose to sin. This week, we read how the Catechism of the Catholic Church summarizes the Church’s teaching on freedom. 1743 "God willed that man should be left in the hand of his own counsel (cf. Sirach 15:14), so that he might of his own accord seek his creator and freely attain his full and blessed perfection by cleaving to him" (Vatican Council 2, 2965). 1744 Freedom is the power to act or not to act, and so to perform deliberate acts of one's own. Freedom attains perfection in its acts when directed toward God, the sovereign Good. 1745 Freedom characterizes properly human acts. It makes the human being responsible for acts of which he is the voluntary agent. His deliberate acts properly belong to him. 1746 The imputability or responsibility for an action can be diminished or nullified by ignorance, duress, fear, and other psychological or social factors. 1747 The right to the exercise of freedom, especially in religious and moral matters, is an inalienable requirement of the dignity of man. But the exercise of freedom does not entail the putative [supposed, assumed, presumed] right to say or do anything. 1748 "For freedom Christ has set us free" (Galatians, chapter 5, verse 1). So, we see that freedom is a gift to us from God. God gives us freedom so that we can freely choose to believe God, hope and trust in God, and love God and neighbor. These are the proper uses of the gift of freedom. Using freedom to rebel against God and his will is sin.

Saint Paul’s Letter to the Romans Here is chapter five of Saint Paul’s Letter to the Romans, from which our second reading is taken this Sunday, from the Good News Translation: 1 Now that we have been put right with God through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 He has brought us by faith into this experience of God's grace, in which we now live. And so we boast of the hope we have of sharing God's glory! 3 We also boast of our troubles, because we know that trouble produces endurance, 4 endurance brings God's approval, and his approval creates hope. 5 This hope does not disappoint us, for God has poured out his love into our hearts by means of the Holy Spirit, who is God's gift to us. 6 For when we were still helpless, Christ died for the wicked at the time that God chose. 7 It is a difficult thing for someone to die for a righteous person. It may even be that someone might dare to die for a good person. 8 But God has shown us how much he loves us - it was while we were still sinners that Christ died for us! 9 By his blood we are now put right with God; how much more, then, will we be saved by him from God's anger! 10 We were God's enemies, but he made us his friends through the death of his Son. Now that we are God's friends, how much more will we be saved by Christ's life! 11 But that is not all; we rejoice because of what God has done through our Lord Jesus Christ, who has now made us God's friends. 12 Sin came into the world through one man, and his sin brought death with it. As a result, death has spread to the whole human race because everyone has sinned. 13 There was sin in the world before the Law was given; but where there is no law, no account is kept of sins. 14 But from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, death ruled over all human beings, even over those who did not sin in the same way that Adam did when he disobeyed God's command. Adam was a figure of the one who was to come. 15 But the two are not the same, because God's free gift is not like Adam's sin. It is true that many people died because of the sin of that one man. But God's grace is much greater, and so is his free gift to so many people through the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ. 16 And there is a difference between God's gift and the sin of one man. After the one sin, came the judgment of "Guilty"; but after so many sins, comes the undeserved gift of "Not guilty!" 17 It is true that through the sin of one man death began to rule because of that one man. But how much greater is the result of what was done by the one man, Jesus Christ! All who receive God's abundant grace and are freely put right with him will rule in life through Christ. 18 So then, as the one sin condemned all people, in the same way the one righteous act sets all people free and gives them life. 19 And just as all people were made sinners as the result of the disobedience of one man, in the same way they will all be put right with God as the result of the obedience of the one man. 20 Law was introduced in order to increase wrongdoing; but where sin increased, God's grace increased much more. 21 So then, just as sin ruled by means of death, so also God's grace rules by means of righteousness, leading us to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
