REMINDER! Lenten Rules

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.

The norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. Pregnant women and others for whom fasting would be perilous to their health are exempted. Those fasting are permitted to eat one full meal; two smaller meals may also be taken, but not to equal a full meal.

The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding for all from age 14 onwards. Broths made from meat (as long as there are no pieces of meat in it) are permissible according to the letter of the law, though perhaps not fully coherent with its spirit. Vegetarians do well on days of abstinence to give up a certain food or dish that they regularly enjoy, since they already give up meat, not for penitential reasons, but as a way of life.

NEW! John Carroll Open House

John Carroll Catholic High School will be hosting an open house for prospective students and families on Wednesday, April 13 from 4:30 to 6:30pm. Come meet the John Carroll faculty and administration, to learn about our tradition of excellence in a Christ-centered environment. John Carroll Student Ambassadors will begin tours at 4:30pm. For more information, contact Kathryn Davis, Director of Admissions, at 205-940-2400 x233 or email, [email protected].

Josh’s Ordination to the Diaconate

We would like to go by coach bus on Saturday, May 28 to Josh’s ordination at Good Shepherd Church in Huntsville. If you would be interested in going on the bus, please sign up in the church. The cost is $10.00/person and will be collected later. We will leave at 3:00pm and return by about 10:00pm that day. It will be a Vigil Mass and so fulfill your Sunday obligation.

Time to Enroll at St. Barnabas School

St. Barnabas Catholic School began accepting applications for the 2016/2017 school year on March 1, 2016. Applications for Scholarships for Kids are also available. There is only one month remaining for the scholarship opportunity! For more info, contact the school at 205-836-5385 or visit their website, http://stbcsbhm.org.

NEW! Holy Child Chapel OPPORTUNITY

Our students have been making daily visits to the Blessed Sacrament, reserved in Holy Child Chapel in St. Barnabas School, for a couple of months now. It is thanks to your generosity that we were able to make this chapel a reality! We do have another memorial opportunity. Chapel chairs are being purchased that will match the other furniture and will have flip-down kneelers. Each solid oak, upholstered chair will cost $190.00. This price includes the placement of a small brass plaque in memory or in honor of someone. Five chairs have already been claimed – 20 are still available. Did your child(ren) attend St. Barnabas? Did you attend St. Barnabas School? This is a great opportunity to place the names of such people before the Blessed Sacrament in the chapel! Call the office or speak with Father Jerabek if you would like to sponsor one or more chairs.

Ladies’ Auxiliary Raffle

The St. Barnabas Ladies’ Auxiliary is selling tickets for two exciting raffles. Pink tickets are being sold to benefit the women’s scholarship fund for ASK AL KC, $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00, for a chance to win a $500.00 cash prize. White tickets to benefit the Bishop’s Fund are being sold for a one week stay in a Gatlinburg, TN condo – $10.00 each or 3 for $25.00. Drawings will be held on April 30 at the KofC State Convention. You need not be present to win. See any member of the Ladies’ Auxiliary to buy yours! Thank you for your support!

Easter Egg Hunt

All children, toddlers through grade 5, are invited to participate in the Easter Egg Hunt on Easter Sunday, March 27. Please meet on the patio immediately after the 10:00am Mass. Candy-filled eggs will be divided by color for each age group and there will be a special section set aside for the youngest participants! Bring your basket! (Please sign up in advance so that we can plan appropriately.)

NEW! Father Sullivan Named John Carroll Pres

We extend prayers and best wishes to Father Robert Sullivan, pastor of St. Francis Xavier Parish, on his nomination as President of John Carroll Catholic High School (effective June 1, 2016). Fr. Sullivan will assume this new role on top of his existing assignment. He replaces Father John McDonald, who will be moving to Rome in early August to take up the teaching of homiletics to the seminarians of the Pontifical North American College.

NEW! Father Jerabek to St. Paul’s Cathedral

(This is printed here for the sake of those who were absent for the pulpit announcement.)

Father Bryan Jerabek will become Rector of the Cathedral of St. Paul on July 1, 2016, thus ceasing to be Pastor of St. Barnabas and Holy Rosary Parishes at that time. We will know soon who the new Pastor of St. Barnabas and Holy Rosary will be. The current Cathedral Rector, Father Kevin Bazzel, will be moving to Rome to work in the Vatican starting in early April, and Deacon Neal Kay has been appointed as Cathedral Administrator for the interim.

CATHOLIC VOCABULARY
