Book/CD Kiosk News and Reviews

A fine resolution for this new year would be to make better use of free time. All time belongs to God, who is the beginning and the end and Lord of all, and to him we will render an account for our use of the time he has given us. The time that we spend listening to the radio in the car could be spent instead listening to an edifying CD about our Catholic faith; the time that we spend watching worldly television shows could be better spent reading a book that will help us to mature spiritually and so grow in charity and peace.

Our book and CD kiosk (located by the statue of St. Therese, near Fr. O’Connor’s confessional) provides just such resources at extremely low cost (and money is not an issue: if you can’t pay the full suggested amount or anything at all, take the resources that you would like anyhow). Some new titles will be arriving soon. Until then, here are some reviews of items that are currently available:

BOOK Searching for and Maintaining Peace

This short and accessible book, written in 2002 by the French priest, Fr. Jacques Philippe, will someday be numbered among the great spiritual classics. In a clear and concise manner, Fr. Philippe distills classic Catholic spirituality in language that the modern reader can relate to and understand. From the author’s description:

We live in a day and age characterized by an extraordinary amount of agitation and lack of peace. This tendency manifests itself in our spiritual as well as our secular life. In our search for God and holiness, in our service to our neighbor, a kind of restlessness and anxiety take the place of the confidence and peace which ought to be ours. What must we do to overcome the moments of fear and distress which assail us all too often in our lives? How can we learn to place all our confidence in God and abandon ourselves into his loving care? This is what is taught in this simple, yet profound little treatise on peace of heart.

BOOK Dominus Est! — It is the Lord!

The remarkable bishop from Kazahkstan, the Most Rev. Athanasius Schneider, recounts in this short book his experience growing up under an oppressive regime and the wonderful way that love for the Eucharist was taught and demonstrated in his community of faith – particularly by the brave “Eucharistic women” who safeguarded the Holy Eucharist at great personal cost. The good bishop then explains why Holy Communion received on the tongue is the historical practice of the Church and is to be preferred today, in order to protect and show the proper reverence to the Most Blessed Sacrament. Written in a clear and concise style, this book will increase your love for and appreciation of the Real Presence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist. It was originally published (in Italian) by the Vatican Publishing House.

CD Anger and Forgiveness

Psychotherapist and Catholic Deacon, Dr. Bob McDonald, gives a prescription for overcoming the sinful anger that poisons the mind of Christ within, causing alienation and division.

This CD has changed my life! It has given me a clearer understanding of anger and how we can overcome it. Dan – Oakdale, CA

Powerful wisdom for hearts in exile due to lack of forgiveness. Deb – Leawood, KS
