The Beacon St. Barnabas Episcopal Church May- June 2017 Everybody loves a birthday. On Pentecost, June 4 th , we celebrate the feast day of the descent of the Holy Spirit, which is often referred to as the birthday of the Christian Church; Let us examine this word “Church.” What is a Christian Church? Here is a good definition: The Christian Church is a visible society established by Jesus Christ to continue the work of redemption. First, we say that the Church is a visible society, consisting of people who believe in Jesus Christ as the Savior and the Son of God, and of clergy who are ordained by God to govern it. The first thing Jesus did when He began His public work was to gather a group of followers. Of these He selected and trained twelve to be His apostles. They were to carry on His work after Him. When Judas died, the apostles were careful to fill his post. This has gone on and on down through the centuries, so that today’s bishops and priests are successors of the Lord’s apostles and disciples. Second, the Church was established by Jesus Christ; it is not a man-made institution. Although faulty because it is overseen by man, it is faultless because it is established, ordered, and governed by Jesus Christ. Jesus speaks of “His” Church. He “purchased” it or established it with His death on the cross. This Church was born on Pentecost Day. It was then that God the Holy Spirit came to dwell within the Church. Just as the first man, Adam, was lifeless until God breathed into him the breath of life. So, the church truly became a living society when the Holy Spirit descended from heaven and took up His abode within the Church and its people. The Church is often spoken of as the “body of Christ” – we are the members of that body, and the Holy Spirit is the soul. Third, the Church was established to continue the work of redemption. This means saving people for eternity. It is true that mankind was saved by the death of Jesus Christ on the cross. It is true that Christ said on Good Friday “It is finished,” and that this includes the fact that our salvation is complete. But the “good news” of Christ’s death to save us has to be made known to all men and women of every place and every time. So Christ established a means whereby His salvation would be brought to all people of the world and this means was His Church. Our Lord said, “I have come to seek and to save the lost.” This is the Church’s mission: not just some of the time, but all of the time! Let us celebrate the Feast of Pentecost as the real birthday for our Church. May it give us the power to be true witnesses for Christ, to be truly the “called ones” for Christ, Our Lord. May we on our travels and various other activities throughout the summer remember what it means to be “called by Christ.” Also, when we are home, we celebrate with our church community in the common mission and witness every single Sunday. The Beacon St. Barnabas Episcopal Church May- June 2017

Everybody loves a birthday. On Pentecost, June 4th, we celebrate the feast day of the descent of the Holy Spirit, which is often referred to as the birthday of the Christian Church; Let us examine this word “Church.” What is a Christian Church?

CHURCH ANNOUNCEMENTS

Notes from the Sexton I appreciate the effort the coffee hour host and their assistants put into collecting the wet dishcloths and dishtowels and putting them on the washing machine. Here is my conundrum: unless I have tablecloths to wash, it may be a week or longer before I go into the laundry room and we all know what happens to a pile of wet laundry left in a pile for a week or longer. Here is the solution to the conundrum: the coffee hour host and their assistants spread the wet dishtowels and dishcloths on the tables around the kitchen to dry and when I come in on Monday to clean up for Rotary; I will gather up all the dishtowels and dishcloths and put them in the dirty laundry. Respectfully submitted, David Thomas

Monday, May 1 ~ Evening Prayer at 6 p.m. in honor of St. Philip & St. James, Apostles

Almighty God, who gave to your apostles Philip and James grace and strength to bear witness to the truth: Grant that we, being mindful of their victory of faith, may glorify in life and death the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Theology Night resumed Tuesday, May 2 at 6 p.m. at the Celtic Cup Father Murphy dares you to bring a theological question designed to “stump the priest.” Enjoy the great atmosphere and refreshments at the Celtic Cup while he leads the group in a lively discussion. Theology night resumed Tuesday, May 2 and will meet every Tuesday night at 6 p.m. throughout May and June.

Hymn Festival ~ Sunday, May 7 at 5 p.m. The Music Ministry of Saint Barnabas’ Episcopal Church held their Third Annual Hymn Festival on Sunday, May 7 at 5 pm in the church sanctuary at 110 East Lincoln in Tullahoma. Dr. Darryl Ray Miller of Franklin served as the guest organist. The program consisted of anthems by the Saint Barnabas Festival Choir (directed by Mr. Evans Baird), congregational hymn singing, and organ pieces played by Dr. Darryl Miller on the newly enlarged Casavant Frerés pipe organ. There was a reception following the festival in the parish hall.

Dr. Darryl Miller serves St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Franklin, Tennessee, as Organist. Beginning in 2002, he served a dual role as Director of Music and and Organist, but chose to step down from conducting three years ago. At St. Andrew Church, Darryl was directly responsible for negotiating the acquisition of the 52-rank Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ. He recently retired as a music specialist with the Metro Nashville Public Schools.

It was a good time had by all those able to attend the Hymn Festival. Thank you to the

participants who helped to make it a success! We’re so blessed to have gifted choir

members and musicians in our community who join us each year for the festival.

Building Use - If you would like to use the parish hall or any other rooms at St. Barnabas for events that have not already been scheduled, please write it on the calendar (preferably one month in advance) in the old parish hall by the office. If you are the committee chairperson in charge of a church event, please also note the times on the church calendar that you will need for set-up and cleanup. You may use the parish hall for family/group events but there may be a rental charge for using the church building depending on the nature of the event. Please email June in the parish office so that she can get the proper approval from Father Murphy and discuss rental fees with you.

Outreach needs for the summer

Box Fan Drive for Good Samaritan Good Samaritan relies heavily on the fans we buy to assist those without a means of keeping cool in the warmer months. You may donate a box fan to help or make a monetary donation to the St. Barnabas’ Outreach Committee for the purchase of a fan. Fans usually cost between $15-25. St. Barnabas’ Diaper Drive

The Outreach Committee has been getting many requests for children’s diapers from those in need in the community. If you would like to donate diapers (Size 2 and up preferred), there will be a collection area set up by the parish hall entrance. Or you may also make a monetary donation to the Outreach Committee for the purchase of diapers.

GOOD SAMARITAN ~ SUMMER FOOD PANTRY Summer can be a tough time for some of the children in our community. A lot of those children receive most of their meals during school where they are given breakfast and lunch. Tullahoma City Schools will again be offering a free breakfast and lunch program at East Lincoln Elementary on weekdays during the summer. However, some children will still be in need of snacks and food for other meals. Listed below are some items that the pantry has requested for the summer. However, any donations of food items not on the list are also greatly appreciated by Good Samaritan. They’re always impressed by the generosity of our parish when they pick up the donations! REQUESTED ITEMS: peanut butter, jelly, breakfast bars, boxes of cereal, boxed instant oatmeal in packages, canned or pre-packaged fruits, applesauce, easy to open lunch & dinner meals (ravioli, spaghetti, macaroni & cheese etc.)- anything that is easy for children to prepare or cook for themselves.

Please give monetary donations to Robbie Williamson

PLEASE CONSIDER joining the Altar Guild ministry. The more workers there are in the Guild, the less work and less time is required for each person. The current members have done a stellar job keeping the church altar clean and beautiful, and did yeoman duty for the Easter season, but they really need additional hands. Please contact Anne Hightower for more information.

PRAYer FOR MOTHERS: We give thanks to God for the divine gift of motherhood in all its diverse forms. Let us pray for all the mothers among us today; for our own mothers, those living and those who have passed away; for the mothers who loved us and for those who fell short of loving us fully; for all who hope to be mothers someday and for those whose hopes to have children have been frustrated; for all mothers who have lost children; for all women who have been a substitute mother for those in need. We pray this all in the name of Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for Fathers: Loving God, Heavenly Father, we thank You for fathers. We thank You for biological fathers, adopted fathers, and fathers in spirit. We thank You for fathers who love and nurture children who are not their own, who teach us to be upright and courageous in adversity and make us strong enough to go out into the world. We thank You for fathers who work hard every day to help fulfill the needs of their families, who fix broken things and teach us how to do it ourselves, who embrace us and guide us, who love us even when they don't understand us. We know they reflect and embody Your love for us as our heavenly Father. Comfort those of us who miss our fathers this day, and strengthen and bless those fathers who work so hard to love, protect, and nurture their families this day and every day. Amen
