Notes from THE DESK OF THE PASTOR December 25, 2015 Christmas Message My dear friends: We live in a world that is not unlike the world that Jesus was born into. Each day it seems we hear of crime, and violence and upheaval. Clearly there is sin and darkness in the world. There are also extraordinary acts of good-ness and kindness we never hear about. There are many angels among us bringing us the message of love and salva-tion. Each Advent, as we did a few weeks ago, we experience the beginning of our journey and the Church year. There would be no resurrection without the birth of the Christ child. The Son of God, the face of God’s mercy, the long awaited Savoir is with us. We focus on the hope this brings to a waiting and troubled world. Christmas is such a time to be hopeful, positive and uplifting as we have much to be grateful for in life. Christmas is the time of the year for spiritual awe as God brings forth unconditional love for all in a most special way, the birth of Jesus, the Son of God. Each day God is here and shows His love for us, but Christmas is so special. Mary and Joseph shared the blessings of their child with the whole world. Their example, their love for the Christ and their desire to do God’s will even with great personal sacrifice speaks volumes to all. God invites us to share this message of Christmas love and wonder with others. It is Jesus who brings not only peace and fulfillment of promises and salvation but also light, faith, knowledge and the Spirit of God to a world so in need of this. Jesus heals us and saves us if we desire this. Jesus’ wish is that each of us expe-rience peace and love. Jesus is all about welcome and hospitality. How do we help others to be welcomed and experi-ence hospitality? As we celebrate His birth and prepare for His second coming, we are reminded of the history of all that has gone on and is going on in the world. When we count our blessings and share who we are with others good things hap-pen and we can make a difference. We have seen that the birth of Jesus is an invitation to each of us to bring Him to others particularly those most in need. Many times this past year you have been asked to help and you have so nicely. Thank you for all of your kind-nesses and the ways you share God’s blessings with others through your generosity and prayers. My prayer is that this Christmas Season and the coming year of will be a year of blessings that brings all closer to God. Please know that you are in my prayers and thoughts and in the masses that I celebrate on Christmas day. Merry Christmas! God bless you. Fr. Phil McGaugh

The parish, during Advent, is sponsoring two GIVING TREE PROJECTS: The first is our Warmth Drive which benefits the clients of Catholic Charities. Beginning today, and continuing until December 20, we invite you to help us decorate our tree with items which will provide warmth to those who would otherwise suffer during our cold New England winter. We suggest mittens, gloves, hats, scarves, sweaters, heavy socks, fleeces, blankets, etc . The second project is a monetary collection for the benefit of the St. Francis House Homeless Shelter in Boston . St. Francis House is a day shelter that serves over 600 homeless and poor men and women each day. At St. Francis House, breakfast and lunch are served free of charge to all who are hungry, every day, 365 days a year. Emergency sandwiches are distributed just before closing for those who may not be able to obtain dinner. St. Francis House also provides a host of additional services to all who enter, including mental health services, substance abuse assistance, basic needs such as showers and toiletries, creative therapies in art and music, vocational training, and medical assis-tance. Our collected donations will help St. Francis House to provide meals to the hundreds of people who eat there every day. If you wish to make a donation to the St. Francis House Homeless Shelter we ask that you write a check payable to St. Bartholomew Parish with St. Francis Project written on the memo line. You may bring or mail the check to the rectory or put it into the collection at the Offertory.

Christmas Collection: Every Christmas, we join with family and friends to honor and thank our priests. Over 614 diocesan priests cele-brate our joys, comfort us in times of crisis or sorrow, and are there during the ordinary and extraordinary mo-ments of life. Together, they represent thousands of years of dedicated service to Christ and to us—His Church. Remember priests such as Rev. Arthur M. Cal-ter, Rev. Francis D. Garrity, Rev. Paul G. McPartland, Rev. Richard J. Craig and Rev. John J. Connelly who have made a meaningful difference in your life, and con-sider honoring him/them with a generous gift to today’s/tonight’s collection. You also can make a gift online at clergyfunds.org, use the in-pew envelopes that will be provided, or simply text the word PRIEST to 56512 (Msg.& data rates may apply). Our priests have dedicat-ed their lives to serving the Catholic faithful here in our Archdiocese. Now, it is our turn to serve them in their time of need. Thank you for your prayers and generous support of our priests.

STEWARDSHIP: A WAY OF LIFE Sharing: Time Talent Treasure A VERY BLESSED CHRISTMAS SEASON TO ALL AND WISHES FOR A HOLY AND HEALTHY NEW YEAR, ALL YEAR LONG A little story: There was a woman who never knew her age when asked by her children and later her grandchil-dren. “Mommy, how old are you? I’m seven and three quarters.” Later her grandchildren asked the same. “Grammy, how old are you? I’m four and one half.” Her response was always the same. “Let me see. What year is this?” Then she would get a piece of paper and pencil and write the year she was born on the paper. And then she would sub-tract. This not knowing your age was always a surprise and mystery to her children as they had their ages figured out to the month. Grandmother lived to be over 100 years old. Perhaps there is a lesson here that the most precious moment we have to live is the NOW moment. What is past is past. It is done. What is to come, will come, if it is meant to be. To do lists aside; instantaneous and constant communi-cations that take forever; all of life’s ‘stuff’; all of our created pressures; do they own us or do we own them? May the New Year give us the year we were meant to live and the life we wish to live. And may we always remember that whatever journey we are on, God is with us all the way. Make room for Him, for His blessings, for His guidance. And forget your age. Stewardship Questions: Kathy Reilly 781-444-0862 email: [email protected]

Meet Fr. Vin −The Gift of Family

As the pastor of three parishes in Dorchester and Mattapan, Fr. Vin’s responsibilities are extraordinary. While his daily work is a source of great joy, it’s the love and devotion of a special sister named Connie that restores his spirit.

When Fr. Vin’s parents passed away, he and his sister Eileen became the sole guardians of their disabled sister. For Fr. Vin, being a brother and a priest for Connie is an immense blessing. The unconditional love that he receives from Connie—especially at the end of a busy day— continues to fill his heart with gratitude.

Fr. Vin selflessly dedicates his life in service to others. This Christmas, show your gratitude with a gift that cares for Fr. Vin and the health and well-being of all the priests who faithfully serve our Archdiocese of Boston.

Text the word PRIEST to 56512 or make a gift through your parish collection at Christmas Mass.

Thank you for your generous support of the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust.

“A priest, whoever he may be, is always another Christ.”

-Saint Josemaría Escrivá
