NOTES FROM THE PASTOR
Reflections for Divine Mercy Sunday:
Do we believe that Jesus Christ is our Savoir and that He has risen from the dead? Jesus changed lives and His Resur-
rection changed the course of history. Today which is the second Sunday of Easter is also known as Divine Mercy Sun-
day. Easter time is filled with a sense of wonder, awe and gratitude. In the gospel story today we see an invitation to
move to a fuller journey of faith. The story of Thomas’ journey to faith in the Risen Lord is John the Evangelist’s way of
putting that issue before us. In today’s readings we experience the time of St. Thomas having doubts but Thomas is one
of the disciples that would truly die for Jesus. St. Thomas insisted on seeing and touching the wounds of Jesus. We
should not be too hard on St. Thomas. Some suggest that when Jesus died Thomas was off facing his grief by himself.
St. Thomas honestly faced his grief and returned to the disciples. When St, Thomas saw Jesus’ wounds he also saw
Jesus’ true greatness. He also shows us that religion requires much more than just ourselves. We are called to belief
on the testimony of others. Peace is the first action that Jesus offers His disciples. The peace of Christ guides us. Do we
let Jesus bring us to peace and heal our wounds? We can clearly see in this gospel the movement from fear to joy, from
seclusion to mission, from absence to presence, and from disbelief to new life.
Divine Mercy is all about God’s desire to open the way and lead us to eternal life by forgiveness of our sins. On this Di-
vine Mercy Sunday we are encouraged in prayer to receive in a special way God’s mercy for the world. Divine Mercy
Sunday is God’s gift to us to completely renew and re-energize our church. How wonderful and significant is that this
occurs so close to Easter. Like St. Thomas may all of us rejoice in the great gift of the Resurrection and the Risen Lord
overcoming sin and death to lead us to eternal life.
Divine Mercy Sunday
April 23 at 3:00pm at St. Joseph Church
St. Joseph Parish will observe Divine Mercy Sunday at 3:00pm in St. Joseph Church. Please join us for Exposition and

celebration of Sunday Mass).
Thank You Kathy:
Four years ago Kathy Bird became the Business Manager and an invaluable member of the staff here at St. Bartholo-
mew. In that time she has added so much to our parish through her work, her willingness to help, and her insights in so
many ways which were way above doing her job.. There really are no words to describe her contributions to our parish.
She is retiring on April 30, 2017 and will be greatly missed. We wish her the best of everything in her retirement.

The meaning of Sainthood:
Three years ago on Divine Mercy Sunday we had the
opportunity to watch something extraordinary; the can-
onization of two saints from our time, Pope John XXIII
and Pope John Paul II. Throughout the Old and New
Testaments we read about people of heroic virtue. Many
different virtues are highlighted. Throughout the history
of the Catholic Church there have been men and women
of outstanding character and prayer some of whom have
been declared saints. The declared saints each in their
own way reflect a special connection or virtue that re-
flects God. For someone to be declared a saint usually
miracles attributed to their intercession are required.
There are other saints in heaven as well. To reflect upon
the lives of the saints is to be inspired and is intended to
encourage us to strive to be more perfect.
Thank you:
This past Holy Week and the Sacred Triduum were very
special. Many of you have expressed similar feelings.
Over these many years we have celebrated many special
Holy Weeks and Sacred Triduums, but this year was re-
ally special. Thank you to all who greatly enhance the life
and spirit of St. Bartholomew Parish. Thank you for the
ways you have responded to our Lenten Parish project.
Easter Collection:
Thank you for all that you have done over the years and
what you have done this year for the Clergy Fund which
greatly helps the needs of all of the Boston Priests. I
know that you more than understand the challenges that
our Archdiocese faces in taking care of the needs of all of
our priests. You have always responded wonderfully. An-
yone who may wish to still give to this special collection
may still do so, Thank you.
Second Collection: Military Archdiocese
This week’s second collection supports three important
national Catholic mission. The Military Archdiocese col-
lection provides for Catholic chaplains throughout the
world for American servicemen and servicewomen. The
Home Missions collection subsidizes the evangelization
and formation activities of mission dioceses. The Black
and Native American collection strengthens evangeliza-
tion and outreach programs that serve the Native Ameri-
can, Alaska Native, and Black Catholic Communities in
the United States. For more information, please visit

STEWARDSHIP: A WAY OF LIFE Sharing: Time Talent Treasure GRATITUDE Out of nowhere the little boy said, “I have two favorite people in church.” When asked “Who are they?” by his parents,
he replied, “Jesus and God.” Not to be out done, his older brother said, “Well, I have three favorites. Jesus, God, and
Father Phil.” “And why is Father Phil a favorite?” his parents asked. He answered “ Because he says ‘Thank you to
me’.” Do we notice the sunrise or sunset? So many opportunities to say thank you. So little focus. How often in a day do we
give others a chance to say thank you to us? And how often do we say thank you to another in a day? (Too many to
count?) Gratitude is essential to being a child of God. Jesus was our model of the meaning of servitude. We have just
lived through another Lenten period in which we were witness again to the sufferings of Jesus, His apostles, His disci-
ples. Did we process the need to say thank you in our prayers? Can we possibly comprehend Jesus’ agony in the gar-
den before His trial? He knew what was to come. He knew the frailty of human beings then and to come. The whole
world, a world our Creator made so magnificent, seemly is being torn apart daily. Our emotions run the course from
appreciation, to gratitude, to nervousness, to fear, to confusion, and to most every other feeling in the course of a day.
These are very difficult times in which to live and to be grateful. However, it is essential to our creation to be people of
God every day in every way. LOVE!! Love Him above all else and love one another as He has loved us. Remem-
ber? Gratitude and a belief that God cares about our daily struggles will bring us peace—a peace that He gives is
greater than any we will find on our own. Because He promised it. ‘My mommy really loves my daddy. Every time he gets some food, mommy takes a taste. He always says ‘thank you.’ Stewardship Questions: Kathy Reilly 781-444-0862 email: [email protected] If anyone needs a ride to a church service or wishes a home or Communion visit, please contact me.
