A Message from theCEO of St. Benedict Preparatory School

Our Vision of Excellence is Starting Strong! The 2010-11 school year, our inaugural year as St. Benedict Preparatory School (SBPS), was one fi lled with hard work, constant change and tremendous success. Reorganizing the school programs (three distinct schools: preschool, elementary and high school) into “one school with one vision” was no easy task. It was my honor and privilege to implement these changes along with so many talented faculty, parents and board members. In one year, so many things were accomplished! Of all the successes last year, we are most proud of the following:

• Implementing a new administrative model and welcoming our new administrative team: Mr. Accardi, Ms. Waldron, Mrs. Feely and Ms. Mickelburgh. • Implementing a new organization of programs and curriculum: Preschool, Elementary School (K-5) and Secondary School (6-12) so that there is continuity of key programs, culture and mission.• Initiating a new school board governance model: our elementary and high school boards have merged into one new structure and has revised its bylaws to refl ect our new mission and vision. • Initiating a strategic planning process, with support and supervision from the board, to guide us through the next three to fi ve years as we implement our Vision of Excellence.

Last year, because of our diligence, vision and courage, we were awarded the 2011 Innovations in Catholic Education Award for our restructuring. Our administrative team was honored in April during

the National Catholic Education Association Convention in New Orleans, along with our SBPS Home and School Association (HSA), who received the 2011 NCEA Distinguished HSA Award. Besides these extraordinary events, this year’s annual report captures many of our key moments of learning, service, faith, and celebrations.

While we are pleased to highlight all the good things happening at SBPS, we know that we are just beginning our journey together transitioning into a fully implemented preschool through grade twelve SBPS program. We are only getting started! We are just warming up! The school advisory board will be publishing later this fall our three to fi ve year strategic plan, called Vision of Excellence 2016. We encourage our parents and supporters to contact us if there is a particular project that you would like tosupport with time, talent or treasure. It takes a strong community working together to achieve a common goal in order to create a family like St. Ben’s!

And fi nally, we could not achieve all the successes of the past and present without our generous donors. Their support demonstrates a clear commitment to our vision. I am genuinely grateful for all the blessings shared with us over the past year. It is our charge to use our resources wisely as we implement our Vision of Excellence.

God Bless, Ms. Rachel Gemo

Preschool Highlights from 2010-2011

Early Childhood Psychology ClassMs. Erin Barrett, St. Benedict Preparatory Preschool Assistant Director, introduced a new high school electivein Early Childhood Psychology during the second and third trimesters. Junior and senior students spent two days per week in the classroom, learning about early childhood social, emotional, and mental development. Students then spent three days per week in a preschool/primary grade classroom, interacting with our little ones and gaining experience in an authentic environment. The class culminated with students presenting a case study on one young student that they observed throughout the trimester.

In deciding on this elective, students reported interests in teaching, nursing, babysitting, and working with young children in some capacity. Amanda Nota, SBPS Class of 2011, found the class to be a valuable experience.“This class made me realize that I want to be a preschool teacher,” reported Ms. Nota. “I learned so much!” She plans to pursue a degree in education at the University of Illinois-Chicago. Early Childhood Psychology will be offered again in 2011-2012.

Preschoolers Celebrate Their Grandparents and ParentsThe annual SBPS Grandparent’s Day celebration brought grandparents and friends into classrooms throughout the school. Preschool classrooms welcomed their grandparents with food, songs, stories, and more. Grandparents helped their grandchildren glue, cut, and paint during festive activities to commemorate the day.

“Muffi ns for Mom” and “Donuts for Dad” welcomed moms and dads to preschool classrooms in the spring. Tea, muffi ns, and donuts were served as moms and dads began the school day with their children. Preschoolersmade special projects to present to their parents and enjoyed spending this unique time with them. We love celebrating our parents and grandparents for all that they do for us.

Language Stars Shine in the Preschool Thanks to the generosity of our school parents, preschool students participate in Language Stars Spanish class every week. Language Stars is a play-based fun way for students to learn a foreign language. Funds for this program were acquired through our annual “PAWS for Excellence” Parent Appeal.

2010-11 Project Vision of Excellence Preschool Accomplishments:* NEW POSITIONS: Full time Preschool Director * two teachers and two teacher aides for newly opened preschool homerooms * PROGRAM EXPANSION: Two completely furnished classrooms with all necessary instructional materials bringing total number of homerooms to ten, the largest Preschool Program in the Archdiocese of Chicago.

SBPS Forms Partnership with Belle Center

St. Benedict Preparatory Preschool and Elementary School formed a strategic partnership with the Belle Center. The Belle Center is a local, non-profi t organization that provides support and professional development focusing on classroom inclusion. Inclusion specialists and occupational therapists from the center conducted professional development training sessions for teachers throughout the year. In addition, they observed in classrooms assisting teachers with physical modifi cation recommendations and suggestions for meeting individual student needs. The goal of the partnership is to assist teachers in supporting all learners and styles of learning. SBPS plans to continue working with the Belle Center in the coming school year.

Reader’s Workshop Update“This is the best part of the day.” “I can’t wait for reading time.” “Can’t we read some more?” These are just some of the comments you would have heard if you visited elementary school classrooms last year. Reader’s Workshop, a comprehensive reading program designed to encourage the love of reading, was implemented in grades 2-5. Students were taught the reading strategies that all successful readers use and also writing strategies to communicate about their reading. Students were taught to interact with the text through mini lessons, one-on-one conferences with the teacher, and descriptive letter writing. Reluctant readers quickly became successful readers and looked forward to their favorite part of the day.

Elementary School Highlights from 2010-2011

Our Prayers for JapanWhen news of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan in March became known, the SBPS students knew they had to do something to help. The elementary school Student Council and high school International Club worked together to raise money for earthquake relief. Members made Japan fl ag pins that students and faculty could buy to show their support for those affected by the disaster. In addition, elementary school students created and signed “Our Prayers for Japan” cards and wrote prayers to keep the Japanese people in their hearts. A total of $1,500 was donated to the Save the Children organization on behalf of the students and faculty of SBPS.

Terra Nova Scores Exceed National StandardsThe 2010-2011 Terra Nova standardized test scores once again show St. Benedict Preparatory Elementary School students performing well above Archdiocese of Chicago and national percentiles. Terra Nova tests are administered to grades 2-7 every March and results are compared to peer norm groups across the country. While we live in a society that likes to compare one school to the next, the most important thing we do with these results is compare ourselves against past performance. Two consistent results come from these scores: in all subject areas our grade level equivalents continue to increase and the number of students performing at or above the national norm continues to increase. For our most recent test scores, please visit our website at www.stbenedict.com.

Middle School theatrical talent was on display throughout the year in three drama productions. Mr. Bill Gorgo, high school drama teacher, coordinated three productions involving middle school and high school students. “Spoon River Anthology,” adapted from the poetry of Edgar Lee Masters, was performed during the fi rst trimester by the seventh and eighth grade Drama Class. The performance was reprised for the Annual Barnes and Noble Book Fair in December. “Twelve Angry Pigs,” a spoof of “Twelve Angry Men,” written by Wade Bradford, was performed by Mr. Potempa’s sixth grade homeroom. The fi nal performance of the year was “The Table,” a festival of nine short plays performed by middle school and high school drama students. All three performances received rave reviews!

Middle School students perform Spoon River Anthology in Kittler Hall.

National Junior Honor SocietyTwo thousand and eleven marked the inaugural year for the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) at St. Benedict Preparatory Middle School. All sixth and seventh graders who held a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) were invited to apply for induction.

Students were selected on the basis of their GPA and their leadership, service, and citizenship. The process culminated with the induction ceremony, with inductees pledging to uphold the standards of the NJHS. Members will meet in the new school year to plan service projects for their middle school peers. Congratulations to new NJHS members! Middle School students inducted into the National

Students take part in the Middle School Retreat.

The Annual Middle School Retreat Program, led by Augustinian Father Terry Deffenbaugh, provides a challenging opportunity to identify ways that middle school students can become leaders within the school and parish communities and to continue that leadership throughout their lives. We look at our middle school students as role models and believe that having the ability for them to work together will foster strong and collaborative relationships throughout the year.

Two online courses piloted in 2011 allowed high school students to experience a lecture/discussion course modeled after a college classroom. Sociology and Psychology courses taught by Ms. SamanthaHarris challenged college bound students with a rigorous curriculum involving online and classroom components. Students worked independently conducting web quests and research to meet specifi c course objectives. The class then met in a seminar setting to discuss results of their research. Ms. Harriswas pleased with the results of this project and plans to continue offering the courses again next year.

Online Classes: High Tech Learning

How to Succeed As a BengalA new course offering this year helped prepare St. Benedict Preparatory High School students for a successful high school experience. Ms. Jean Hybinette’s curriculum for this introductory course taught the essential study, research, and test taking skills needed to succeed in academic life. In addition, students were taught the valuable skill of seeking out academic assistance when necessary. Students incorporated software and online resources that help prepare them for high school, college, and beyond.

Teaching About MatterMr. McLean’s sophomore chemistry class served as

science ambassadors to Ms. Geisler’s fi fth grade class last fall. The chemistry class was completing a unit on matter. As part of the assessment, their assignment was to construct ways of teaching the content to elementary school students. Posters, experiments, and demonstrations were all included in the presentations to teach about the types of matter. The high school students led the fi fth graders in demonstrations that included bottle rockets, lifting ice with string, and water vortexes. The fi fth grade “future scientists” were very enthusiastic about the sophomore “science experts” experiments.

Bengals in ChinaNine St. Benedict Prep High School students and two chaperones enjoyed an extraordinary Spring Break experience during their tour of China. The ten-day trip included stops in Beijing, Xi’an, and Shanghai. The group had the opportunity to tour some of China’s most historical and culturally signifi cant landmarks. One highlight of the trip was the visit to the Great Wall. The group spent over two hours climbing and exploring the steep inclines and uneven steps of this incredible landmark. On their return to the United States, the group agreed that this trip allowed them to experience the nuances of Chinese culture, customs, and cuisine in an educational and enjoyable environment.

“When I was hungry, you gave me to eat” (Matthew 25:35). High school students were given the opportunity to live out this corporal work of mercy through service at a soup kitchen. Campus Ministry and high school students donated, prepared, and served food at the St. Teresa Soup Kitchen in the DePaul neighborhood. Once a month, a group of volunteers prepared food and staffed the kitchen for those neighborhood residents who would have gone without a hot meal.

Technology Highlights from 2010-2011

Technology Updates

MOBI Update

The “MOBI” mobile interactive whiteboard system that was piloted last year has been fully implemented in kindergarten through grade 5. In addition, the system has been expanded into middle school and high school classrooms. Donations from parents, 2010 Ball and Auction, Market Day, Home and School Association, and federal Title I funds have been used to expand the program. The MOBI system allows teachers to use on-line resources to support their classroom lessons. Students are more engaged in classroom learning because the system is interactive. “I” clickers allow students to respond using an electronic response tool that only the teacher can see. Teachers report that students are more engaged when the MOBI is used and the system supports classroom learning.

One-to-One Laptop Initiative

The use of technology in the classroom continues to expand at St. Benedict Preparatory School. The middle school one-to-one laptop initiative is now in its fi fth year, providing each student with their own laptop for use with school and home assignments. Two thousand eleven saw the initiative expand into the high school with the inclusion of the freshmen class. Onlinetextbooks and web-based resources allow teachers to integrate technology-based learning across the curriculum. In addition, teachers are able to continually update content using current technology. The program will continue to expand in 2011-2012 with the addition of the sophomore class.

Big Shoulders Fund and DePaul Team Up for Technology

Last year St. Benedict Preparatory High School, along with two other Catholic high schools in Chicago, was chosen to participate in the DePaul Catholic School Partnership. This partnership, part of a Big Shoulders Fund Grant, was designed to train teachers to use the latest technology in the classroom. SBPS teachers, Ms. Kellina Bruett and Ms. Mary Deletioglu, attended trainings, observed the use of technology in other schools, and were challenged to incorporate more technology into their instruction. In addition, they instructed their colleagues on integrating six MOBI interactive whiteboards into their daily lessons. Money from the grant also assisted with the purchase of “I” clickers, fl ip-cameras, and projectors for

classroom use. Partnerships with Big Shoulders Fund, DePaul University, and St. Benedict Preparatory High School assist the preparation of students as 21st century learners.

Each year, St. Benedict Preparatory School relies on the generosity from alumni, families, parishioners, the community, foundations, and friends to help it remain successful and on the cutting edge of curricular and technological programs. Enrollment growth was seen from preschool through ninth grade, a very positive sign that SBPS will weather the current economic climate. Furthermore, the parish concluded its most recent campaign which resulted in $193,267 solely for school repairs and improvements. The retirement of several loans, thanks in part to a matching-debt retirement program offered by the Archdiocese, also occurred this year. The parish’s new three-year campaign, “Restoring the Past; Preparing for the Future,” will continue to support elimination of the parish and school’s loans, and possibly start an endowment for the school. As you can see, the various annual appeal campaigns did well last year and we are looking forward to another successful year. Our tuition covenant model ensures our viability along with our successful multi-faceted development program.

Financial Highlights from 2010-2011

Parish Support: BenFest - $27,108.48 This Parish summer festival in honor of St. Benedict is split with the parish. Two-thirds of the proceeds go to support the school. This and Bingo are the two forms of parish support on which we rely. We defi nitely thank the BenFest chairs and volunteers, particularly BenFest Chair, Steven Meskan.

2010-2011 Revenue vs. Expenses

Annual Parent Appeal (PK-8) - $81,000Formerly called the Paws for Excellence Parent Campaign, this parent appeal reached 25% parent participation. In its sixth year, this advisory board sponsored-appeal has grown very much (in 2005, the appeal generated $5,000 in total), and we are grateful for the board’s efforts. In keeping with our commitment to the vision of St. Benedict Preparatory School, our school charges a tuition less than the true cost of educating a student. This appeal helps to fund the “gap” between the cost of tuition and the cost to educate one student ($1,300 for elementary students). One hundred percent of donations goes to fund the program enhancements for the elementary school.

Grandparent Appeal - $1,950After our PK-5 Grandparents and Grandfriends Day Events, we send out a Thanksgiving Appeal to our guests. We are fortunate to have so many generous grandparents who value Catholic education and demonstrate support through their donations.

High School Board Event - Movin’ As One $5,167.32 This past April, the High School Board sponsored a fi tnessevent called “Movin’ As One.” This event featured exercise-dance teacher and high school parent, Ms. Gloria Araya, along with a health fair from many vendors from the local community. It was sure a lot of fun to “bust a move” while doing something good for the body.

HS Mandatory Fundraiser - $37,764.80This past year, high school students were able to sell Kim and Scott’s delicious chocolate covered pretzels for their mandatory fundraiser. Since Kim and Scott’s Gourmet Pretzels (Chicago’s very own!) donated THOUSANDS of pretzels to St. Benedict Prep, we were able to keep 100% of the proceeds! This was a successful fundraiser and profi ts almost doubled over the 2009-10 amount.

ES Restricted Funds - $12,058HS Restricted Funds - $9,195The Restricted Funds is comprised of donations targeted for particular projects. Most of this year’s donations were earmarked for technology upgrades and Mobi technology and training, as well as scholarships.

St. Benedict Prep 10th Annual Ball and Auction Mardi Gras - $125,978Thanks to Ball and Auction Chairs, Meggan Flom and Katie Troelstrup, last year’s event at The Galleria Marchetti was the most successful since its inception 10 years ago with over 400 attendees. Ten percent of the proceeds go for debt reduction payments. The rest of the funds go to support the school program and curricular costs.

Athletic Fundraiser - $6,100Each year the St. Benedict Athletic Association hosts a fundraising concert for music lovers and revelers alike. The funds raised from this event go to support gym facilities upgrades. Over the summer, a new scoreboard and sound system were installed using proceeds from this event. Thanks to Jenny Courtad and Rick Petrillo for spearheading the 2011 event!

Market Day - $2,651.06Thanks once again to Mrs. Peggy Shubrych for her leadership in running this school fundraising program. Parish Support: Bingo - $18,968 Our thanks to Gary and Daralis Oliver for their organization of this event. Each Tuesday, parishioners and community members gather to play Bingo in the gym. This weekly event helps to support the school scholarship program.

St. Benedict Preparatory High School Celebrates 60th AnniversaryAlumni, former teachers, and friends of St. Benedict Preparatory High School gathered on April 30 to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of the school. A gala dinner was held in honor of those who have attended and taught in the school throughout its history. Special recognition was awarded to the School Sisters of St. Francis, who have dedicated over 50 years serving our school. With a rich history of sixty years behind it, St. Benedict Preparatory High School looks to continue the tradition of excellence in the future.

National Recognition for St. Benedict Preparatory School

The St. Benedict Preparatory Home and School Association (HSA) received the 2011 NCEA (National Catholic Education Association) Distinguished Home and School Associations Award. This award, presented at the NCEA Annual Convention in April, recognized only 5 HSA’s across the country. The HSA won the award for its work in supporting SBPS’s recruitment, enrollment, and retention efforts. In 2010, the HSA was instrumental in the admissions process, beginning with recruitment and carrying through with support to new families. This all-encompassing approach to admissions maximized enrollment and increased the retention rate from grade to grade, while building a sense of community among our families.

St. Benedict Preparatory School was also presented with the Catholic Schools for Tomorrow Innovations In Education Award from Today’s Catholic Teacher magazine. This award, presented at Broussard’s Restaurant during the 2011 NCEA Annual Convention in New Orleans, recognized SBPS for Project Vision of Excellence. This project was implemented in 2010 and restructured the school administration and curriculum.

This restructuring has resulted in one vibrant model for rigorous Catholic education from preschool through senior year of high school. With these two national awards, SBPS continues to grow and strengthen the mission of offering quality PreK-12 Catholic education on the north side of Chicago.
