NOW, MORE THAN EVER.
Now, more than ever, do we need to teach the Gospel. We need to accept that the youngest of our community oen have the most to
teach us. Only in the setting of a Catholic school can we truly teach the pillars of our marvelous faith without fear. We must acknowledge
that we have so much to learn, and vow to never let our youth go without learning the Truth.
ST. BENEDICT PARISH
ST. BRIDGET’S CHURCH· ST. MARY’S CHURCH· ST. MARY’S SCHOOL
CALVARY CEMETERY· ST. BRIDGET’S CEMETERY
This weekend we celebrate “Sunday of the Word of
God”. It highlights the importance of the reading of
scripture within the liturgy. You have noticed that every
rite of the Church, the Sacraments especially, proclaims a
reading from scripture (even the Rite of Penance in which
it is often done informally). The reading of scripture is
therefore integral to the celebration of the Sacraments.
You have probably heard the rumors of the unwritten
rule that, if late, a person must arrive before the Gospel
reading for it to “count”. There is no such rule, however.
The Church, rather, values the placement of the Liturgy of
the Word within its celebrations that it cannot ever be
removed. It is vitally important. Christ himself is present
in this proclamation in a substantial way in Word and
Sacrament.
Today, we hear the power of the Word (Christ himself)
to call his disciples and begin his ministry. The words of
scripture speak to the Word who is Christ. We gather to be
strengthened in this ministry as he strengthened those
whom he called in his earthly life. We are given this power
for mission in the world for the common good of all. It is a
lofty and great call.
The call we share is truly a call to a people to live
beyond the law to no longer see our obligations as
regulations to be adhered to, but a life to be lived. When
we live only by the law we always live a halflife asking
“how far can I go within these rules”. But if I live by the
rule of love, I will do anything, follow any rule, to make
the life of another better. I will even give up my own life as
Christ did for us.
This is the Word that is proclaimed: that God gave us
not a rule to be followed, but a true life to be lived. This
takes us all outside of ourselves and makes us holy and
intimately more known to God.

St. Vincent de Paul Society Update
The St. Vincent de Paul Society Vouch-
er and Clothing Rooms: The St. Vincent de
Paul Society Voucher and Clothing Rooms are
now closed due to the resurgence of the Coro-
navirus in Ontario County.
However the Virtual Voucher Room reopened on Friday,
January 15. Clients should call the St. Vincent de Paul Soci-
ety phone line at (585) 3943980 from Monday through
Friday, leaving a message with their concerns, and someone
will return their calls as soon as possible. There will not be
any Virtual Voucher Room service on weekends.
Important Note about Clothing Room Dona-
tions: PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE CLOTHING, TOYS, OR
OTHER ARTICLES for the St. Vincent de Paul Society
Clothing Room in The PAC hallway anymore! Leaving arti-
cles in the hallway creates unsafe conditions and an incon-
venience for St. Benedict’s staff and visitors. Any donations
should go directly to the Clothing Room at 120 North Main
Street in Canandaigua, preferably on Wednesday and Satur-
day, left by the Clothing Room “workroom” door, if no one
is there. Someone from the Clothing Room checks that
space daily, and takes in all donations. Thank you for your
donations and understanding regarding this request!
Thanks in advance for your help and efforts!
It hurts to lose someone. Find help at GriefShare.
GriefShare is a friendly, caring group of people who will
walk alongside you through one of life’s most difficult expe-
riences: losing someone you love. One group member
said, “I was numb after my husband’s loss. Everyone
seemed to disappear when I needed to talk about him. It
was a big step for me to meet with others who were
strangers to me, but I found that our common experience
brought us together in an unique way. I finished the pro-
gram, but I intend to take the course again because it was so
helpful for me.”
In February we will offer again the "Loss of a Spouse"
seminar for those grieving a spouse's death, to be conducted
on February 18 from 11am1pm via Zoom. Then on
March 4, the GriefShare thirteen session program will
begin and will be held weekly on Thursdays from 11am1pm
via Zoom. The GriefShare program consists of a video semi-
nar series featuring some of the nation's foremost Christian
experts on grief and recovery topics as seen from a biblical
perspective. The video seminars are combined with support
group discussions of the materials presented during the vid-
eo and a personal workbook is provided for individual
study. This is an opportunity to be around people that un-
derstand what you are feeling. Please email Diana Gerland
at[email protected]with any questions. You will need to
contact Diana in advance of attending to receive the Zoom
meeting link. You may join at any time; the sessions do not
need to be completed in sequential order.
Public Policy Advocacy WeekendFeb 1314, 2021
Advocacy Issue: Funding for NOURISH NEW
YORK initiative
The COVID19 pandemic has hit everyone hard. In partic-
ular, the pandemic has focused a spotlight on two vulnera-
ble groups in New York State: farmers and our neighbors
who are food insecure many are newly hungry due to job
losses caused by the pandemic. The Diocesan Public Policy
Committee invites us to join in helping both on Diocesan
Public Policy Advocacy Weekend (February 13 and 14) by
calling on state leaders to allocate $50 million to continue
the NOURISH NEW YORK initiative during state fiscal year
20212022.

Jesus will teach you to catch others for him. You can
catch fish by putting food in front of them. People need
soul food to be close to God. People want to go to heaven
with God. Tell them that Jesus loves them and died on
the cross for them. Tell them he wants everyone to do
good. Then people will gladly come into his net. They will
be at peace because Jesus will give them everything they
need.
Lord, help me to stay focused on following you.
