St. Bernard Parish Bishop’s Appeal 2018

We are at: $64,364 Our Goal is: $92,843

Today is Palm Sunday and marks the begin-ning of Holy Week. This Sunday we receive new Palm branches. These can be placed somewhere in your home, office or car. Often times when visiting persons homes I will see them behind a cross or an image of

Jesus. You may put them in any place that helps with your own devotion to God. These palms remind us of many things. For one, they remind us to welcome Christ into our life as the crowd did when he entered Jerusalem. He comes to us throughout the day through persons and events. Not directly so often, but as if behind the scenes. Palm branches are also reminders to us of how we may sometimes abandon him throughout the day, especially signified by the browning and burning of our old branches each year. Palm branches are pictured in ancient Christian art as the sign of a Martyr. When any Saint died having been put to death for their faith in Christ, they are often drawn holding a Palm branch. What are the times when you have to suffer for being faithful to God? We are a people of the Palms. Our suffering may very well be an inner faithfulness that only we and God know about. So be it. In the eyes of heaven, your Palm branches are seen. I pray your palm branch reminds you of your calling and encourages you to be strong and faithful in whatever you may face throughout the day. Palm Sunday is marked by the color red and it recalls the blood of Christ especially vivid in the hearing of the Gos-pel passage for today, that of the Passion. The Passion of Christ is read by everyone and we are asked to take our appropriate part. It can be a helpful spiritual experience to take the part of the crowd. It helps each of us take some ownership of our sin and of our part in the suffering of our Messiah. The Priest has the sobering part of speak-ing the words of Jesus in the Passion. The priest at Mass stands in the place of ‘Christ the Head’ and feels as awk-ward as perhaps you do in the reading of our own particu-lar parts. Enter it with an open heart and voice. Find a good place for your Palms. Remember they are blessed and should not simply be discarded in the trash. If you do not want your palm branches, save them till the thaw and then maybe bury them in a garden. Let their green serve as a reminder of how you once welcomed Christ and can do it again each day anew. Let them chal-lenge you to be a martyr for Love and Truth’s sake each day, and a reminder to hold onto the promise of the resur-rection as the martyrs did when they faced their trials. This Holy Week is full of worship opportunities, see what you may be able to attend and come join us. Fr. Mark Vander Steeg

Palm Sunday

“Pilate again said to them, ’Then what shall I do with the man whom you call the King of the Jews?’ And they cried out again, ’Crucify him.’”- MARK 15:12-13

Jesus told us “whatever you do for the least of my brothers, you do for me.” Every day we are presented opportunities to help someone. Every day we have the opportunity to see the face of Jesus in others and be the face of Jesus to others. Pray for the strength and courage to stand up for those in need of our help.
