3rd SUNDAY OF ADVENT

"The blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised." Jesus has quite a résumé. When asked whether or not he is the long awaited Messiah, Jesus replies with this list of his credentials as proof of his position. These signs and wonders speak volumes, to be sure. But perhaps the most interesting line on the list is his concluding one, "the poor have the good news proclaimed to them." Why does he count this among his litany of miracles? What is so remarkable about shar-ing good news?

Perhaps Jesus included this element of his work--the preaching of good news--to remind his followers that the physical healings were not the ultimate goal of his mission. Rather, the spiritual healing that comes from hearing the good news of salvation is what Jesus was really about. The "poor"--which in a sense means all of us sinners, trapped by the poverty of the sins that enslave us--are freed by Jesus' message of a loving God who wants to bring us into his kingdom. Our poverty is erased by his richness. His mercy "undoes" our sin and we are invited to become the children of God who share in the glories of his heavenly abode.

Sometimes it's tempting to just want the visible miracles. But the invisible ones--the conversions that take place in the silence of the human heart--are truly the more important works of God. Such interior transformation is what leads us to eternal life; even a physical cure won't last for eternity--death still comes at some point. But the really good news is that this miracle of conversion is available to all of us. And this season of Advent is the perfect time to let God work his miracles in our hearts.

Yours in Christ

Fr. Brian

This is the last week of classes ending the first semester. Classes will

resume on Monday, January 9th. All Catholic School students in sec-

ond and third grade seeking sacraments this spring need to

register for classes now to begin the week of January 9th.

There are sign-up sheets and rehearsal schedules in the hallway, by my

office, for the 4pm Mass on Christmas Eve when the children act out

the Gospel of Luke. Children ages 4 thru 8th grade are eligible to par-

ticipate. Children who are Choristers will be in the choir not the Gospel

story. Make sure your children can make the rehearsals before you

sign them up. The first rehearsal is this Saturday,

December 17th from 10-11:30am in the Church.

Sacrament classes are closed for the 2016/17 school year. This

includes 2nd, 3rd, Confirmation and Heritage. All other classes,

Kindergarten, First Grade, Fourth and Fifth Grades remain open all

year. Please make sure your children are in class on time and picked

up on time.

Confirmation and First Communion for all third graders and above

that are not being baptized at the Easter Vigil will be on Sunday,

April 30, 2017 at 2pm. As always, if you have any questions, com-

ments or concerns about Elementary Faith Formation, Sacrament

Preparation (Elementary, Middle or High School) or Adult Confirma-

tion please contact me at [email protected] or call me at

***Christmas Angel Tree Gift Drive***

The Christmas Angel Tree will be standing in the Main Entrance Hall of St. Bernard’s Church each weekend through Sunday, December 18. Each Christmas Angel bears the name, age, gender, and gift requests of an under-

privileged child. This year the children are from our own Parish; the inner city Phoenix Parishes of St. Catherine of Sienna, St. Mark, and St Martin de Porres;

and the Our Lady of Guadalupe School in Aguila, AZ. Please take an Angel tag

and try to match the description of the child and the gift(s) as best as you can.

All gifts should be returned wrapped and with the Christmas Angel attached. We will collect the gifts at each Mass the weekend of December 17 and 18,

2016. Thank you on behalf of all the children you are helping during this sea-son of sharing.

The Vincentians of St. Bernard of Clairvaux Collection December 11th. Aging religious need your help. Thousands

of senior sisters, brothers, and religious order priests spent years working in Catholic schools, hospitals, and agencies--often for little pay. Their sacrifices leave

their religious communities without adequate savings for retirement and eldercare. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious collection helps provide prescription medications, nursing care, and more. Please give to those who have given a lifetime. Thank you for your generosity

Make a Tax Credit Donation to Help Save Unborn Babies

Aid to Women Center is a non-profit Catholic pro-life pregnancy center serving at-risk women with free pregnancy tests and ultrasounds. We are the only pregnancy center to provide low cost prenatal care to wom-en with no insurance, relying solely on the generosity of donors.

This spring, we are looking to move to a new, larger location that will allow us to serve more women and their unborn babies. We need your help with this! Please prayerfully consider making a tax credit donation to us under the AZ Taxpayers Qualifying Charitable Organization. A tax credit is not a tax deduction. You receive 100% of your donation back on a tax credit. Individuals can get up to $400 back, while those filing jointly can get up to $800 back. Taxpayers can contribute to ALL of the various tax credits, and still receive the maximum amount back in refunds.

Here is how your tax credit donation helps: $35 provides a prenatal consult

$100 provides tests & ultrasound for a woman considering abortion $355 covers her entire prenatal package

Next meeting is December 16, Friday morning at 6:30am in the Parish Hall. Q With Christmas fast approaching, can you give me some practical tips to prepare myself

and my family that will help us "stay grounded" in what this holiday is really about? With all the commercialism, it's easy to stray...

A Happy times and events bring fond memories and a renewed sense of love and kinship with

others. The anticipation is half the joy of the event itself. The coming of the Lord is that kind of

event that people have been looking forward to for generations with fervent hope and desire. It

gave them strength and courage as they waited for the coming of the Lord.

We know that Christmas is rushed. Sales begin in August and carols blare long before the

season begins. Everyone laments the commercial aspects of the season, but as Advent begins,

do something to help you be more mindful of the Lord's coming. Use an Advent wreath, or

enthrone the Bible prominently, or read the readings from the Bible assigned to each day.

Postpone the tree and decorations until closer to Christmas. Establish new family rituals, cus-

toms and prayers that help remind everyone that we are preparing to celebrate the birth of

Jesus. Fasting, daily Mass, a special celebration of reconciliation, reaching out to those alienat-

ed from family or society, and visiting the homebound manifest the love of the Christ Child and

the Holy Family. Resist the temptation to rush the season. In his own time and in his own way, God will come. Our task is simply to be watchful and ready. ©2009 Liturgical Publications Inc

The Arizona Income Tax Credit for Contributions to Qualifying Charitable Organizations for the working poor (also known as the working poor credit) entitles you to reduce your Arizona income tax dollar for dollar for contributions to The Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Joint income tax filers can obtain up to $800 in reduced AZ income taxes (for single filers the amount is $400). You do not need to itemize to obtain the credit. When you make a cash dona-tion to SVdP through this special appeal or in regular Church en-velopes in 2016, you will receive a letter by next February from the Vincentians of SVdP at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Conference. This letter will serve as your receipt and verification that you have made the contribution to enable you to complete AZ form 321 to file with your 2016 AZ Income Tax Return.

Your Contributions Help People The Vincentians of St. Bernard of Clairvaux Conference serve persons substantially all of whom live within the Parish bounda-ries. SVdP provides resources to people including helping them feed their families, obtain medicines, access transportation, avoid evictions and prevent utility shut-offs. These resources are not just financial but referrals to other agencies that also provide help with medical, legal, financial, employment and other essentials. The Vincentians also pray with the people in their time of need asking for God’s blessings for them and those who support SVdP.

Other Credits The working poor credit is in addition to other credits for Arizona income tax filers. For example, you can also claim credits for cash contributions for private school tuition and public school extracur-ricular activities. Several other charitable organizations qualify as donees for the working poor tax credit and all such contributions must be aggregated in calculating the credit.

Making a Donation to The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Please make your check payable to The Society of St. Vincent de Paul and mail it to SVdP, St. Bernard of Clairvaux Conference, 10755 N. 124th St., Scottsdale, Az 85259.

HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE 2016

We collected 645 Food Bags at the Holiday Food Drive. On behalf of the families at St. Catherine of Siena Parish, we would like to thank you, our generous parishioners for helping us help others. May this season of blessings bring back in abundance all you have shared to those in need.

On Turkey Tuesday, we spent the day at Basha’s (Thompson Peak and Bell). With thanks to Basha’s and the shoppers there, we collected 302 turkeys and 71 bags of food for turkey dinners. Of that total,10 turkeys with green beans, cranberry sauce, etc. necessary for a Thanksgiving celebration were given to people living in our parish. St. Catherine of Sienna received 140 turkeys and all of the remaining bags of food. The balance of 152 turkeys was given to SVdP downtown for distribution to the people of the Phoenix metropolitan area. At the two events, you generously donated over $2,000 to help us in our ministry to help those in need. May this season bring you an abundance of blessings in recognition for all you have shared with those in need.
