"No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends." Christians are no strangers to sacrifice. Jesus lays down his life for our redemption, martyrs

remain faithful to the end, and every believer faces "deaths" in the spiritual life when love requires a re-ordering of preference and priority. On Memorial Day, we honor those who laid down their lives for their nation and for the values we espouse - freedom, justice, and a better world for our children. In a day that often fills with barbeques and boat launches, remember to take some time in prayer! Intercede for those who have died and for the loved ones they left behind, and pray for peace on earth.

St. Therese Vocation Society Prayer God our Father, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I ask You to bless and strengthen the spiritual renewal and vitality of all priests and consecrated religious so that Your Church may shine with greater splendor and bear witness to Your presence in our world today.

In particular, inspire many men and women to respond to Your Son’s call to “Come, follow Me” as members of those communities which are living the religious life according to the mind of the Church. Please inspire many men and women to respond to Your Son's call to “Come, follow Me.” I ask this in Jesus' Name. Amen.

The Ascension of the Lord

A pair of ducks found their way to the same little corner of the property year after year. Sheltered by a little grove of trees, they quickly made their preparations to build a nest, lay eggs, and welcome in a new family. Then one year, only one of the ducks came to that little corner. She went about the business of building a nest, but this time, she was clearly unsettled. She would wander around, sometimes seemingly without purpose, almost hoping perhaps that her mate might come along. But, she remained alone. There were many times when we could hear her “crying”, mourning her loneliness and lack of purpose, sitting on a batch of eggs that would never hatch. One day, she quietly left that little corner never to return again.

Many human beings approach life this way. We silently grieve our loneliness, lack of direction, and sense of purpose. Maybe life once had meaning for us, but nothing seems to claim us and settle our restlessness any longer. We wander around looking and hoping for someone or something to come our way. We may even sob at times, wailing as we sit with the misery of our pain. Will happiness ever come our way again? Or will we simply leave where we are never to return again? Many are lost, wandering souls who are not quite sure where to settle or where to make a home.

We are meant to be in Christ. This glorious feast of the Ascension shows us, with clear vision, who Jesus really is! Understanding ourselves in Christ really changes things up and reorients us to our greater purpose, mission, and meaning. We are part of the cosmic wonder of creation and part of a bigger plan and mystery, destined to be much more than what we now know ourselves to be. Could Jesus’ friends know who he would become? If we can find the Christ present within and see the Christ bursting forth in all creation and beyond, then we can come to know our truth and understand where our home and life is meant to be.

Advancing upon the blessing of each new day with the certain knowledge that you are an unconditionally loved child of God gives you the axis and the safe harbor to cope with whatever comes your way. The gift of joy will be yours, and you can discover your true meaning and purpose. Look within, look without, look above, and look below. You are not alone. Trust that God will lead you where you need to be and transform you into who you really are.

We are now in Phase One of our safe return to public Mass. It was good to see so many of you this past Sunday. There is still no obligation to attend Mass on Sunday, so if you are uncomfortable please stay home and participate in the Live Stream Mass at 11:00am on Sunday and 9am Monday through Saturday and make a spiritual Communion.

Confirmation and First Communions will not resume until phase three which may be a few months out, so we cannot set the date for that until we reach phase three. We will be looking at a time in the Fall for the class of 2020 and of course set a date in the Spring for 2021. We need to approach everything safely and patiently.

Information is coming out daily, so we encourage you to check the website stbernardscottsdale.org for all updated information. You may email me at [email protected] or call me at the Parish Office Monday through Thursday. I can pick up emails when I am out of the Office, so you will get a response a lot quicker than leaving a voice mail. The Parish is using Flocknote to send out general messages, so if you are not receiving them please call the Parish Office and make sure they have your current phone number or email.

We will be in touch! Stay safe.

God’s blessings,

Kathie

Safe Environment News All Volunteers in any Parish Ministry please note: Thank you to all who have completed or are in the process of completing their training. I appreciate your patience as we try to get through this during the Coronavirus shut down. I am more available right now to answer questions by phone or email since we are not having Faith Formation or Liturgy. You may call me at the Parish Office Monday through Thursday or email me at [email protected] if you have questions. There are a few people who have started the process, whether it be renewal or foundation, but have not gotten clearance, because something is incomplete. I would ask you to go back into your account and make sure you have: Number one: clicked on the right course; Foundation is for those who are new or who have not renewed in the past three years. “Renewal” is for everyone else. Number two: make sure all the steps have been moved from pending to complete, including the background check. If you need a Live Foundation Class you can do so remotely online right now. If you have not set up an account go to https://phoenix.cmgconnect.org and then go to the “Register for a New Account” section and complete all steps. Then go to “Dashboard” and click on the Foundation Training that says, “Initial Online Foundation Application; ‘A Time to Protect & A Plan to Protect’.” Click on “Start” and follow the directions. You must download the “Procedures to Report in Arizona” (takeaway packet) and read through it (this is necessary to complete the course). Complete and submit background check, making sure all information is accurate. Allow 7-10 days after submitting for approval. This remote Foundation class will only be available until we are cleared to have “live” classes again. Once again please make sure all sections are marked “DONE”. One note, everyone will be in need of renewal on July 1, 2020. It doesn’t matter when you took the course the SET year runs from July 1st to July 1st. Please stay healthy and be safe! Kathie Stine
