Christmas Day has come and gone, but for as a Church we continue to celebrate Christmas until the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. The Feast that we celebrate today – The Epiphany of the Lord - commemorates the visit of the Magi or wise men. This is the second of the Manifestations of our Lord and Savior to the

world. The first is Christmas and the third is the Feast of the Baptism (January 10th).

The feast of the Magi is on record as the first celebration for Christmas. This feast celebrates the manifestation of Jesus to the whole world via the Magi. From tradition we learn their names of Melchior, Caspar, and Baltizar. These three men saw something special in a certain star that would attract them to follow it for close to two years, leaving behind all that they knew and were comfortable with. They saw in the star the announcement of the new King of the Jews. The beauty of their journey is their faith that prompted them to begin it and see it to completion. Their entourage must have attracted a lot of attention along the way. They must have brought a lot of people to this new king of the Jews as they shared their story. When they finally reached what they thought was their destination, they witnessed lack of faith. The star shut down over Jerusalem. When they got the information that they needed and left Jerusalem, the star reappeared and led them to the site. Their journey represents our own journey of faith, like the Magi we are called not only to believe, but to share the story of our faith journey.

From Scripture, we learn that they brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. The significance of the gifts they brought is described by Father Edward Steiner in “The Priest” magazine as follows: “The finest gift was gold; a gift for a king. You gave incense to a priest because incense was used by the priests who would offer sacrifice to God for you. Jesus was both king and priest. Both were part of the vision, but there was more. Isaiah did not foretell all. The Gospel saw the vision widen. Myrrh was used to embalm the dead. It symbolized suffering. God’s vision of the world involved Jesus, and this was a threat. This new king and priest threatened the old order, and this old order would attempt to kill Jesus. We know the end of the story. Jesus would suffer and die, but He would also defeat death. This defeat gave us the new, wider vision. There will be unity but not just of one people, the Israelites. In the new order all people will become united in God. On this Feast of the Epiphany we do not just see Jesus revealed as the Son of God, we see what Jesus came to do for us. The King and Priest, one who would suffer as part of God’s plan, came to unite all of us. The Magi from the East serve the vision. They represent the foreigner and the occult, the mysterious. Eventually everyone and everything will bend a knee and give praise to God. This unity is our vision, our hope, and our peace. We pray for it at every Mass.” May God bless all of you as we celebrate Little Christmas.

FAMILY PERSPECTIVEFAMILY PERSPECTIVEFAMILY PERSPECTIVEFAMILY PERSPECTIVE After meeting Jesus, the Magi returned home by “another way.” What in your family needs to be done “another way?” Do you need “another way to resolve differences, to com-municate or show affection? This is a new year, time to change what isn’t working. Take a tip from some wise men, there’s always “another way.”
