May 31, 2020 - Pentecost Sunday

Howdy,

St. Cyril, the bishop of Alexandria, who died around the year 444, was one of the major preachers supporting the title “mother of God” for our Blessed Mother. He also wrote extensively about the unity of the Holy Trinity. In one commentary on the Gospel of John he wrote:

“With regard to our unity in the Spirit, we may say...that all of us who have received one and the same Spirit, the Holy Spirit, are united intimately, both with one another and with God. Taken separately, we are many, and Christ sends the Spirit, who is both the Father’s Spirit and his own, to dwell in each of us. Yet that Spirit, being one and indivisible, gathers together those who are distinct from each other as individuals, and causes them all to be seen as a unity in himself. Just as Christ’s sacred flesh has power to make those in whom it is present into one body, so the one, indivisible Spirit of God, dwelling in all, causes all to become one in spirit”.

I often say that the Catholic faith is more about “we” than about “me”. It is difficult in our individualistic society to understand many teachings of our Church if we do not accept this critical concept of unity. I am not the body of Christ, we are the Body of Christ.

As we celebrate Pentecost, this is the great gift that we receive when we open ourselves to God’s Holy Spirit; we, together, are the Body of Christ. Blessed Pentecost, Fr. Mike

The Memorare.

Remember O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided.

Inspired with this confidence, I fly to thee O Virgin of virgins my mother. To thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful.

O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

Prayer During A Health Crisis

Compassionate and Loving Father, In the face of confusion and concern impart to us the calm of your presence. In You allow us to find hope and healing.

Be with those who serve the sick and give them Your caring hands.

Be with those who lead and give them Your Spirit of wisdom. Be with those who have fallen ill and give them Your comforting heart.

Wrap your arms around our world and hold us in your love. Allow us at this time of trial to then serve as instruments of that love to all we meet.

We ask this in Your Name.

Amen. ©LPi

Safe Environment News All Volunteers in any Parish Ministry please note:

Thank you to all who have completed or are in the process of completing their training. I appreciate your patience as we try to get through this during the Coronavirus shut down. I am more available right now to answer questions by phone or email since we are not having Faith Formation or Liturgy. You may call me at the Parish Office Monday through Thursday or email me at [email protected] if you have questions. There are a few people who have started the process, whether it be renewal or foundation, but have not gotten clearance, because something is incomplete. I would ask you to go back into your account and make sure you have: Number one: clicked on the right course; Foundation is for those who are new or who have not renewed in the past three years. “Renewal” is for everyone else.

Number two: make sure all the steps have been moved from pending to complete, including the background check. If you need a Live Foundation Class you can do so remotely online right now.

If you have not set up an account go to https://phoenix.cmgconnect.org and then go to the “Register for a New Account” section and complete all steps. Then go to “Dashboard” and click on the Foundation Training that says, “Initial Online Foundation Application; ‘A Time to Protect & A Plan to Protect’.” Click on “Start” and follow the directions. You must download the “Procedures to Report in Arizona” (takeaway packet) and read through it (this is necessary to complete the course). Complete and submit background check, making sure all information is accurate. Allow 7-10 days after submitting for approval. This remote Foundation class will only be available until we are cleared to have “live” classes again. Once again please make sure all sections are marked “DONE”. One note, everyone will be in need of renewal on July 1, 2020. It doesn’t matter when you took the course the SET year runs from July 1st to July 1st.

Please stay healthy and be safe!

Elementary Faith Formation News

We are now in Phase One of our safe return to public Mass. It was good to see so many of you this past Sunday. There is still no obligation to attend Mass on Sunday, so if you are uncomfortable or sick please stay home and participate in the Live Stream Mass at 11:00am on Sunday and make a Spiritual Communion.

Confirmation and First Communions will not resume until phase three which may be a few months out, so we cannot set the date for that until we reach phase three. We will be looking at a time in the Fall for the class of 2020 and of course set a date in the Spring for 2021. We need to approach everything safely and patiently.

Information is coming out daily, so we encourage you to check the website stbernardscottsdale.org for all updated information.

You may email me at [email protected] or call me at the Parish Office Monday through Thursday. I can pick up emails when I am out of the Office, so you will get a response a lot quicker than leaving a voice mail. The Parish is using Flocknote to send out general messages, so if you are not receiving them please call the Parish Office and make sure they have your current phone number or email.

We will be in touch! Stay healthy and please remember to pray

daily with your children!

God’s blessings,

Kathie
