scoutinG thE BullDoGsLed by head coach Rick Stansbury, Mississippi State became the fourth team in SEC history to win four games in four days in the conference tournament in 2008-09. The momentum from the pro-gram's 10th NCAA Tournament appearance and the play of All-American Candidate Jarvis Varnado has the Bulldogs off to a 4-2 start. Varnado enters the game averaging a double-double with team-highs of 14.5 points and 10 rebounds per game. The rangy 6-foot-9 forward currently leads the country in blocked shots (33) and earlier in the year he broke Shaquille O'Neal's SEC all-time blocks record (412). Sophomore point guard Dee Bost is coming off a 25-point performance against Old Dominion and ranks sec-ond on the team in scoring (12.8). All five starters average double figures for the Bulldogs, while just one of their six opponents has reached the 70-point plateau.

vs. thE sEc One of the premiere league's in the country, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) enters its 76th year of existence. The SEC currently has three teams in the top 25 of the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Coaches Polls and another three that are receiving votes. St. Bonaventure is just 1-8 all-time against the SEC, The Bonnies last trip to SEC country came in 2002, when they dropped a 77-68 decision at Alabama.

EasY DoEs itThanks to solid interior play, easy buckets in transition and some recent hot shooting from beyond the arc, St. Bonaventure's impressive 55 percent field goal percentage through the first six games leads the nation. The Bonnies have shot over 50 percent in five of six games and eight of 12 periods. The Brown and White's best shooting performance of the season came against Norfolk State when it finished 37-of-55 from the field for a 67 percent clip. The team's top percentage in a half came over the opening 20 minutes of the season against Cleveland State when it sank 77 percent (17-22) of its shots.

BomBs awaYAfter going through the worst three-game scoring stretch of his career at St. Bonaventure to open the season, senior chris mAtthews has found the shooting stroke that helped him sink 81 three-pointers a year ago. Matthews enjoyed a breakout tournament last weekend at the BTI Classic, averaging 21 points and six trifectas per game over three games. Matthews equaled the school record of eight three-pointers in the final game against Illinois State, while also tying his own career-best of 28 points. The Washington, D.C. product's 3.8 three-pointers per game currently leads the A-10 and ranks eighth in the country. Below is a look at Matthews' dramatic improvements over the last three games.

GEt rEaDY, GEt sEt, Go!Simultaneous with its solid 4-2 start to the season has been St. Bonaventure's ability to get off to great starts in the first half. The Bonnies have taken the lead into the locker room in five of six games, including four leads of 13 points. The Brown and White have out-scored their opponents 224-160 (+10.7) in the first stanza, while shooting 57 percent (84-147). Sophomore Andrew nicholson is averaging 10.7 points and 5.7 rebounds over the opening 20 minutes.

aGainst thE BiG BoYsIn three career games against BCS Conference foes, sophomore Andrew nicholson has more than stood his ground. Most recently, Nicholson registered his fourth career 20-point game against St. John's. The Mississauga, Ontario product is averaging 18 points and eight rebounds while shooting 59 percent (23-39) from the floor over three games against Rutgers, Mississippi State and St. John's. Below is a closer look at those three games.

Block partYWith the arrival of St. Bonaventure sophomore forward Andrew nicholson to the Humphrey Coliseum to take on SEC all-time blocks leader Jarvis Varnado, Saturday's contest should feature plenty of blocked shots as the two have combined for 47 on the young season. The majority of the blocks come from Varnado, as he enters the showdown averaging a nation-high 5.5 rejections per game. A native of Canada, Nicholson has Bona fans reminisc-ing about former Bonnie caswEll cYrus, also from Canada. Nicholson ranks fourth in the Atlantic 10 with 14 blocks - good for a 2.3 average. The 6-foot-9 forward finished second in the A-10 and 11th in the country in blocks in 2008-09 with 81 rejections.

thE cn towErStanding 6-foot-9 with a 7-foot-4 wingspan, sophomore Andrew nicholson is the center of attention for opposing teams. That hasn't stopped the reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the year from getting off to a great start to his second season, as the Canadian big man leads the team in both scoring (16.3) and rebounding (8.5). Nicholson is shooting an impressive 71 percent (39-55) from the field and has shot below 50 percent just nine times in 36 career games. Nicholson poured in a game-high 26 points on 11-of-15 from the field against St. John's and then equaled a career-high with 29 points and a career-best 14 boards against Norfolk State.

racE to 100After producing the third-best blocked shot total in school history as a freshman, Andrew nicholson is now trying to become just the third player in program history to reach 100 career blocks. Nicholson currently stands at 95 rejections through 36 career games. All-time shot block leader cAswell cyrus accom-plished the feat in 36 games. Cyrus' 100th career block came in the 12th game of his sophomore year when he set the then-school record with eight blocks vs. Siena. Nicholson tied the record last year vs. Princeton and then broke it three games later at Bucknell with nine blocks. Nicholson is currently tied for fourth in the Atlan-tic 10 at 2.3 blocks per game.

paintinG thE town BrownSt. Bonaventure has been extremely efficient on offense. The Bonnies have shot 50 percent or better in five of the six games this season and are shooting at an impressive 55 percent clip (168-305) - the best in the nation. The easy buckets around the rim have led to a commanding 222-162 edge in points in the paint. The 222 points in the paint account for 49 percent of the team's offense this season.

mr. novEmBErSenior JonAthAn hAll has made an immediate impact during his short time in the Brown and White, especially in the opening month of the season. Last season, Hall scored in double figures in the opening nine games, including all six games in November. Hall has continued his early season success with six more double figure games, including a game-high 20 points in the season opener, to bring his career 12-game November scoring average to 15 points. Hall is second on the team in scoring at 13.8 points per contest and third in rebounding (3.7) and assists (3.2). The Miami, Fla. product is also fourth in the A-10 in field goal percentage (.627).

homE cookinGWith its win over Binghamton on Nov. 20, St. Bonaven-ture extended its home Reilly Center win streak to six games. The Bonnies closed last season on a four-game A-10 home win streak. Over the six-game win streak, the Bonnies have out-scored their opponents by 12 points per game and have shot over 50 percent in four of the six games for a cumulative 51 percent clip (161-317). Senior JonAthAn hAll is averaging 16.1 points and 7.2 rebounds during the home win streak. Hall has a 30-point and 20-point effort during the run. Senior chris mAt-thews (11.5) and sophomore Andrew nicholson (11.2) are also averaging double figure points during the win streak.

thE Dunk tankArmed with more athleticism and depth, St. Bonaven-ture's eye-opening 77 percent shooting percentage in the first half in its season-opening win over Cleveland State was fueled by a plethora of dunks and layups. The easy buckets have led to 222 points in the paint so far this season. Sophomore Andrew nicholson's eight dunks so far this season are nearly half of the team's 20. Last season, Nicholson led the team with 37 dunks. Here's how the Bonnies stack up this season.

thE cincinnati kiDHead coach mArk schmidt has used a common theme to describe his freshmen at St. Bonaventure: "The best thing about freshmen is they become sophomores." After a fresh-man season in which he averaged 3.3 points and played spar-ingly, michAel dAvenport shown the truth to Schmidt's statement early on this season. After scoring in double figures one time as a freshman, the Cincinnati, Ohio product has already produced three double-digit efforts off the bench this season. Davenport began his second season in style, scoring a career-high 19 points on 7-of-10 from the field. Davenport is fourth on the team in scoring (9.8), second in assists (20) and tied for ninth in the A-10 in field goal percentage (.556).

2009-10 Bonnies Trends

in our DEFEnsEAfter failing to hold an opponent to less than 50 points over the previous 275 games, St. Bonaventure held back-to-back opponents to 41 and 44 points, respectively, in the month of November. It marked the first time since 1982, that the Brown and White have held two consecutive opponents under 50 points. St. Bonaventure held Binghamton to just 40 points - the best defensive effort since 1995 when it held Appalachian State to 32 points - and then followed with a 66-44 win over Southeast Missouri State. Through six games, the Bonnies have scored 113 points (18.8 per game) off opponents' turnovers and have held four opponents to 40 percent or less from the field.

lEnDinG a hElpinG hanDPartial credit for St. Bonaventure's sensational shooting percentage is its improvement in passing the ball. The Bonnies currently lead the A-10 in assists per game at 17.3. As a team, St. Bonaventure has passed out an assist on 62 percent of its field goals, including 26 against Norfolk State. Junior point guard mAlcolm eleBy ranks third in the A-10 at 4.3 per game and has led the team in assists three of the last four games. Sophomore michAel dAvenport passed out a team season-high and career-best eight assists in the win over Norfolk State.

20/20 visionDuring the team's 98-71 blowout win over Norfolk State at the BTI Classic, sophomore Andrew nicholson and senior chris mAtthews became the first duo since 2007-08 to score 20 points in the same game. Nicholson equaled a career-high with 29 points, while Matthews drilled six three-pointers en route to 21 points. The last duo to score 20 points in the same game was michAel lee and tyler relph on senior day against Dayton in 2008. Lee and senior ZArryon Fereti also scored 20 points in the same game three times that season.

CURRENT BONNIES IN THESINGLE-SEASON RECORDS

BEnch pointsOne of the keys to St. Bonaventure success in 2008-09 was the play of its bench. The Bona reserves out-scored the opposing bench 23 times last season and have picked up where they left off. Sophomore michAel dAvenport led the way with 19 points in 28 minutes off the pine against Cleveland State, while seven players off the bench combined for 28 points against Binghamton. So far this season, the Bonnies are averaging 21.3 points per game from their bench, highlighted by 9.8 from Davenport and 5.5 from junior oGo AdeGBoye. The Bona bench supplied at least one double figure scorer in 17 games in 2008-09.

BoarD work St. Bonaventure has out-rebounded each of its six opponents this year for a +8.5 margin. The Bonnies currently rank fourth in the conference and 33rd in the nation in rebounding, while 10 of the 14 A-10 teams sport a positive margin. Sophomore Andrew nicholson leads the way at 8.5 caroms per game, while eight other players are averaging over 2.2 boards. A total of 11 players have grabbed at least one offensive rebound, highlighted by a team-high 12 from Nicholson.

aGEnt zEroJunior oGo AdeGBoye is the first player in program history to wear #0 this season. The 6-foot point guard comes to St. Bonaventure from Lamar Community College in Colorado where he led the Runnin' Lopes to a 27-11 record, the program's first-ever Region IX Championship and first-ever appearance at the NJCAA Division I Tourna-ment. Through six games, Adegboye is averaging 5.7 points, 3.0 boards and 2.7 assists. Adegboye has picked up major minutes off the bench, logging at least 20 minutes in every game.

southpaw cEntralOut of St. Bonaventure's 12 scholarship players eligible to play this season, six of them are left-handed. Four of them come from the guard position (Adegboye, Davenport, Eleby, Leonard), while redshirt sophomore Da'Quan Cook and freshman Brett Rose-boro give the Bonnies options on the left block.

licEnsE to stEalJunior Malcolm Eleby's ability to play multiple guard positions is thanks in large to ability to play defense. The Philadelphia, Pa. native led the Brown and White in steals last season with 42 and is off to another good start on the defensive end. Eleby has registered four multi-steal games bringing his career total to 18. Eleby has a steal in five of six games this year and in 28 of his last 36 contests dating back to last season.

prEsEason honorsSophomore Andrew nicholson's Rookie of the year campaign in 2008-09 earned the respect of the A-10's head coach, as the 6-foot-9 forward was named to the preseason All-Conference second team and All-Defensive team. Nicholson was the only player to be named to multiple teams and is just one of three underclassmen on the three preseason teams. Nicholson also received some notoriety from ESPN's Fran Fraschilla in the fall when he was named to his Outstanding Defenders list.

two oF a kinDThe team leader in the three major statistical categories, senior JonAthAn hAll be-came just the second player in program history to lead the club in scoring, rebounding and assists in the same season in 2008-09. Hall's 12.9 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists were all team-bests. AhmAd smith was the only player prior to Hall to accomplish the feat in program history in 2004-05, with totals of 14.2 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists.

HEADCOACHMARKSCHMIDT

- st. BonavEnturE at mississippi statE (DEc. 5)

Bio With his blue collar work ethic now installed in the program, third-year head coach Mark Schmidt will con-tinue his revival of St. Bonaventure basketball in 2009-10. Schmidt took over the tradition-rich program on April 10, 2007, becoming the 19th head coach in school history. In just two short years, Schmidt and the Bonnies have re-energized the Bona faithful and basketball-passionate Western New york community. In 2008-09, St. Bonaventure finished with a 15-15 overall record – the program’s best mark in the last six years. Included in that season was a program record seven consecutive road wins to start the season and the program’s first trip back to the Atlantic 10 Tournament since 2005. Team team’s seven true road wins also tied the record set by the 2001-02 club.

Key to the quick turnaround in 2008-09 was the team’s ability to buy into Schmidt’s emphasis on playing hard for 40 minutes. That philosophy paid big dividends, as the Bonnies out-rebounded 22 of their 30 opponents en route to ranking in the top five in the conference in all three major rebounding statistics. Also a direct result of Schmidt’s style of play was the team’s 70.8 points per game – the most by a Bonaventure team since 2002-03. During the 2008-09 season, freshman Andrew Nichol-son was named the A-10 Rookie of the year and a Fresh-man All-American by CollegeHoopsNet.com. Nicholson is the third player in Schmidt’s eight-year head coaching career to win a conference Rookie of the year accolade. Junior Jonathan Hall also flourished under Schmidt’s run-and-gun style, becoming the second player in program history to lead the team in points, rebounds and assists in the same season.

Additionally, Schmidt achieved a personal milestone of his own midway through the season, as he earned his 100th career win in the team’s 78-65 win at Fordham in the A-10 opener. Schmidt’s intense personality rubbed off on everyone involved with the program in his first season, including the senior class of Zarryon Fereti, Michael Lee and Tyler Relph who flourished under just one season of Schmidt’s guidance. All three posted career years on the court and experienced success of the court by graduating in May. Both Fereti and Lee worked their way into the profes-sional ranks overseas, while Relph finished as the NCAA leader in free throw percentage. Schmidt served as the head coach at Robert Morris for six seasons prior to coming to St. Bonaventure. There, he inherited a program that had managed just a 7-22 record in the season before his arrival. Schmidt quickly turned things around, leading the Colonials to the North-east Conference Tournament semifinals in 2004 and 2006. During his six seasons at RMU, he had an overall record of 82-90, including a 15-14 mark in 2005-06, the program's first winning season since 2000. Schmidt turned the Colo-nials into a year-in and year-out contender in the confer-ence, posting a 58-52 mark in league play highlighted by four seasons of 10 or more league wins. Schmidt coached six NEC All-Conference players at RMU, along with three All-Rookie team selections and one Conference Rookie of the year in Jeremy Chappell in 2006. Over the last two seasons, Schmidt saw his former recruit Tony Lee and Chappell garner back-to-back NEC Player of the year accolades in 2008 and 2009, respec-tively. Prior to Robert Morris, Schmidt spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at Xavier University under head coach Skip Prosser. Schmidt served as the program's top recruiter, landing future NBA players Torraye Braggs (Houston Rockets), Lionel Chalmers (Minnesota Timber-wolves), James Posey (Miami Heat), Romain Sato (San An-tonio Spurs) and David West (New Orleans Hornets). With most of his coaching responsibilities centered around the post players, Schmidt helped develop West into a three-time Atlantic 10 Player of the year and the National Player of the year in 2003. During his stay in Cincinnati, Ohio, Schmidt helped lead the Musketeers to four NCAA Tournament appear-ances and the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) twice. Xavier claimed its first-ever Atlantic 10 West Di-vision title in 1996-97 and both the West Division and

- st. BonavEnturE at mississippi statE (DEc. 5)

tournament championships in 1997-98. In 1997, Xavier defeated Vanderbilt in the first round of the NCAA Tour-nament and finished the season with the school's highest Associated Press ranking at No. 13. The Musketeers made it to the NIT Final Four at Madison Square Garden in 1999, finishing third, the school's best finish since 1958. Schmidt served as an assistant under Prosser at Loy-ola College during the 1993-94 season. He helped guide the Greyhounds to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament title and the school's first-ever NCAA Tour-nament berth. From 1991-93, Schmidt was an assistant at Penn State University under Bruce Parkhill. The Nittany Lions went 21-8 in 1992 and appeared in the NIT. Schmidt's coaching career began with a two-year stint as an assistant at St. Michael's College in Vermont. Schmidt played four seasons at Boston College, where he received his bachelor's degree in business administration and management with a concentration in marketing. In his freshman season under head coach Tom Davis, the Eagles went 22-10 and made the NCAA Elite Eight. Schmidt played his final three years under the guidance of head coach Gary Williams. Boston College advanced to the NIT in 1984 and the NCAA Sweet Sixteen the other two years. A native of North Attleboro, Mass., Schmidt and his wife Anita have three sons, Nicholas (14), Derek (12) and Michael (9).

The opening 20 minutes looked like anything but the Brown and White’s first half of the season, as their 41-22 advantage at the half brought the crowd of 4,860 fans to their feet. St. Bonaventure was sharp on the offensive end, shooting an unheard-of 77 percent from the floor over the opening 20 minutes. “I thought we played a terrific first half and got out to a great start shooting 77 percent from the field,” said head coach mArk schmidt. “That was the best half of basketball from both an offensive and defensive standpoint that we’ve had in a long time.” The Bonnies received a trio of big performances, led by senior JonAthAn hAll’s game-high 20 points that came on 10-of-14 from the field to go along with a team-best eight rebounds. Sophomore Andrew nicholson contributed 17 points, including 14 in the first half, while adding seven boards and four blocks. The surprise game came from sophomore michAel dAvenport (pictured) who came off the bench and established a new career-high with 19 points on 7-of-10 from the field in 28 minutes of work. Led by Davenport, the Bona bench out-scored Cleveland State’s reserves by a 25-9 margin.

rochEstEr, n.Y. - After erasing a late seven-point deficit over the final three minutes, St. Bonaventure watched its lead evaporate with just six seconds remaining as Malik Boothe sank a pair of free throws to send St. John's to a thrilling 69-68 win on Tuesday night at Blue Cross Arena. Sophomore Andrew nicholson (pictured) made good on his two free throw attempts with just 11 seconds to go, giving the Bonnies their first lead, 68-67, since the 18:05 mark early in the half. Boothe then broke the Brown and White's full court pressure and was fouled going to the rim resulting in the two free throws. St. Bonaventure did get a good look in its final shot, but sophomore michAel dAvenport's three-pointer from the top of the key caromed off the back of the rim as the buzzer sounded. The back-and-forth game featured 10 lead changes and nine ties, as both team's enjoyed good nights on the offensive end. The Bonnies finished above the 50 percent plateau for the second straight game, connecting on 26-of-46 from the field. St. John's shot 54 percent , but made eight three-pointers to the Bonnies' one. The Bonnies out-scored St. John's by a 44-30 margin in the paint. The major reason for that advantage down low was the play of Nicholson, who led all scorers with 26 points despite missing the final nine minutes of the first half due to foul trouble. Nicholson finished 11-of-15 of the field and scored 17 points in the second half.

st. BonavEnturE, n.Y. - A 35-6 run that stretched from the end of the first half through the opening 12 minutes of the second half helped St. Bonaventure shake off a slow start en route to a 66-40 win over Binghamton on Friday night at the Reilly Center. The 40 points giving up is the best defensive effort since Jan. 7, 1995, when the Brown and White held Appalachian State to 32 points at the Reilly Center. It also marks the first time the Bonnies have held a team under 50 points since an 84-44 win over Rhode Island in 2000. The Bearcats managed just six points over 15 minutes and 41 seconds that crossed over from first to second half. The Bonnies forced 19 Binghamton turnovers that led to 22 points. The win moves the Bonnies to 2-1 on the season, heading into next week’s three-game stint at the BTI Classic hosted by Illinois State. The Bearcats, on the other hand, fall to 1-2 with the loss. Just two players finished in double figures for the Brown and White, as 11 of the 12 players who got into the game registered a bucket. Senior JonAthAn hAll (pictured) led the way with 12 points, while sophomore michAel dAvenport finished with 10 points that to a pair of three-pointers. St. Bonaventure built a commanding 43-24 on the glass thanks to a season-best 16 rebounds on the offensive glass. The Brown and White’s hard work on the glass led to a 16-5 edge in second chance points and 34 points in the paint.

normal, ill. - Despite 28 points and a program record eight three-pointers from senior chris mAtthews (pictured), St. Bonaventure couldn’t overcome its 29 fouls in hard-fought 80-77 loss at Illinois State Sunday afternoon in the championship game of the Basketball Travelers Classic on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena. The loss snaps a three-game win streak for the Bonnies, who fall to 4-2 on the young season, while Illinois State stays unbeaten at 6-0. Matthews’ eight three-pointers equaled the school record set seven times by four different players, including by Matthews in last year’s game at Dayton on Jan. 25. The Washington, D.C. native sank 10-of-17 from the field and 8-of-11 from long range. The difference in the game came at the free throw line where the Redbirds sank 27-of-41 compared to 11-of-15 for the Bonnies. The Brown and White committed 29 fouls to Illinois State’s 16. Included the plethora of Bonaventure fouls was sophomore Andrew nicholson, who fouled out with just two points and three rebounds in 15 minutes of work. Nicholson averaged 22 points and 13 rebounds over the first two games of the tournament and was one of three Bonnies that fouled out.
