At the end of another successful year, it is with great pride that I present to you the St. Bonaventure Athletics 2010-11 Annual Report.

All of the accolades, achievements and success stories contained in this report are prime examples of what our student-athletes are capable of in competition, in the classroom and in the community. Their success would not be possible without the continued support of people like you.

Both of the basketball programs and women’s soccer experienced noteworthy seasons in 2010-11. Men’s basketball made its rst postseason appearance and had a winning record for the rst time since 2001-02, while the women’s squad posted its third straight 20-win campaign and WNIT berth. The women’s soccer team nished with 12 victories, one shy of the school record, while earning the program’s rst-ever Atlantic 10 Championship tournament victory in its third consecutive appearance.

In addition, Nicole Markert of the women’s soccer team and Kevin Okapal (Honorable Mention) of the men’s soccer team were named Ideal Bonaventure students, capping stellar careers and marking a tting end to the 2010-11 academic year.

We thank all of the donors, fans, parents and corporate sponsors who had a hand in our victories this season and encourage you to engage others in the broad successes of the St. Bonaventure University athletics programs.

We are committed to success in competition, excellence in the classroom and service to the greater community. We take pride in what we have achieved and are grateful for your generous support of our Bonnies.

Thank you for being a part of the Bona’s family!

The men’s basketball team capped the 2010-11 season with an array of individual and team accomplishments, leaving Bona fans excited for what the 2011-12 campaign could bring. Picked to nish 13th out of 14 teams in the Atlantic 10 preseason polls, the Bonnies far exceeded those expectations by nishing seventh in the A-10 standings. The six-spot change was the biggest difference between prediction and actual nish by any A-10 team this past season.

After hosting La Salle in the opening round of the A-10 Championship, the Bonnies earned a berth into the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) at Central Florida. The game was St. Bonaventure’s rst postseason appearance since the 2001-02 season, and the club nished with a winning record (16-15) for the rst time since that 2001-02 team.

Within those 16 wins were many memorable and thrilling moments. The Bonnies defeated NCAA Tournament participant St. John’s thanks to an Andrew Nicholson jump shot at the buzzer. The Brown and White also defeated NCAA Tournament team Arkansas-Little Rock twice.

In its nal regular-season home game, Bonaventure defeated Rhode Island to claim its 400th victory (400-186) in the Reilly Center. The win culminated many riveting victories by the Bonnies on Bob Lanier Court during the 2010-11 docket.

The rst came early in non-conference play against Big 4 rival University at Buffalo on a jump shot by Nicholson with just seconds remaining. The second was the longest game in program history – a 112-107 win over Ohio University in four overtimes – in which Nicholson scored 44 points and played all 60 minutes. The third, and perhaps most memorable, came in early February in front of a raucous crowd against A-10 leader, and 8-0, Duquesne when junior Michael Davenport hit a 3-pointer with 1.6 seconds left to give the Bonnies the win. Individually, Nicholson continued to add to his collection

of achievements as the physics major earned National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District and A-10 First Team honors. Nicholson also became the 38th player in school history to score 1,000 or more career points, and the rst to attempt more than 200 free throws in a season.

Senior guard Ogo Adegboye led the entire nation by averaging 39 minutes per contest, helped largely by the Bonnies playing 10 extra overtime sessions during the year – an additional game-and-a-half.

Off the court, head coach Mark Schmidt ranked 13th nationally in Academic Progress Rate (APR) improvement.

Losing just one member of the starting lineup, Schmidt will look to send the Bonnies back to the postseason next year while continuing to challenge for an A-10 title.

3

For the fourth consecutive season in 2010-11, the women’s basketball team posted a winning record, and for the third consecutive year it won at least 20 games. The club’s 21-12 record ranked third best in program history, and was good enough to reach

the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) for the third straight season.

The Bonnies won their First Round WNIT game at home against Lehigh before falling at Syracuse in the Second Round. By advancing to the Second Round, St.

Bonaventure has now reached at least the WNIT Second Round in each of the past three seasons.

With a 9-5 record in Atlantic 10 play, the team nished in a tie for third place – its highest regular-season conference nish program history. The Brown and White would also record a win in the A-10 Championship for the third consecutive season when it defeated Fordham in the opening round.

Junior Megan Van Tatenhove led the Bonnies with 14.5 points per game en route to being named to the All-Conference Second Team and All-Academic Team. The Wisconsin native scored her 1,000th career point in the First Round of the A-10 tourney, making her the 17th member of the 1,000 Point Club.

Fellow junior Jessica Jenkins padded her reputation as a deadly shooter, netting a program-record 100 3-pointers this past season. The Ohio product hit a program-record nine 3’s en route to a career-high 33 points in a win over Charlotte on Senior Day. Furthermore, Jenkins’ average of three 3-pointers per game ranked 8th in the entire nation.

The freshman duo of CeCe Dixon and Doris Ortega averaged a combined 7.8 points per game and teamed up for seven total starts on the season.

Ortega garnered A-10 Rookie of the Week honors for the week of Jan. 15 when she came off the bench to tally a career-high 12 points with two blocks

and one assist in a Jan. 12 tilt with La Salle.

The senior class of Cara Gustafson and Amanda Johnson nished their respective careers with more wins than any other class in program history with 85. Those 85 wins represent 26.5 percent of St. Bonaventure’s all-time wins (320) since joining the Division I ranks in 1986-87.

The Bonnies battled through one of the toughest schedules in the nation as they faced seven teams which went on to participate in the NCAA Tournament, and six more teams that made the WNIT.

Through the heavy schedule, the defense told the story for the Bonnies as they held opponents to just 55.2 points per game – tops in the A-10 and 23rd in the nation. St. Bonaventure also nished the year ranked 6th nationally in 3-point percentage at .382, and 7th in the country in turnovers per game at just 13.8.

The 2010 edition of the women’s soccer program was one of the most successful clubs in school history. The team nished with an overall

mark of 12-9 – the dozen victories tying it with the 1990 team for most wins in a single season. Seven of those 12 victories came on its home turf at McGraw-Jennings Field, as the team dropped just one match at home all year.

A grueling non-conference docket, which included trips to BCS members DePaul and Purdue, left the Bonnies with a 6-4 mark entering league play. In A-10 action, St. Bonaventure played all but one of the six tournament teams, nishing with a 5-4 record which included a couple landmark wins.

The rst came in the the club’s second A-10 game of the year when the Bonnies handed Charlotte its rst regular-season league loss in nearly three years by downing the 49ers, 3-1. The second came at home on Senior Day against No. 25 Dayton. Similar to Charlotte, the Flyers entered their meeting with the Bonnies having not lost a regular-season A-10 match since Oct. 24, 2008 – a stretch in which they went 20-0-1. But just as it did to Charlotte, Bonaventure ended Dayton’s streak with 2-1 triumph.

With 15 points at the conclusion of conference play, the Bonnies earned the 4th seed in the A-10 tournament where they met 5th-seeded Massachusetts – the only postseason participant they did not meet in the regular season – in the quarter nals. Following 90 minutes of action, St. Bonaventure had earned another landmark victory, as after 17 years it claimed its rst A-10 postseason victory with a 2-0 decision over the Minutewomen.

That win created a rematch with Dayton in the semi nals. The two clubs battled to a scoreless draw after regulation, but the Flyers were able to pound home a rebound winner just 39 seconds into the rst overtime period for a 1-0 victory.

Despite the unfortunate exit from the championships, the team nished the year with its highest Rating Percentage Index (RPI) in program history at 109 out of 322 Division I schools.

Seniors Anna Cunningham and Courtney Bosse earned postseason honors as A-10 All-Conference First Team and Honorable Mention selections, respectively. Additionally, Tori Burchett was named to the A-10 All-Conference Honorable Mention list. Cunningham led the Bona offense with 23 points on 10 goals and three assists, and was also named to the CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District Second Team.

Senior goalkeeper Nicole Markert received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, awarded to just 29 student-athletes nationwide per year, worth $7,500 toward her graduate school tuition. Markert plans to pursue a Master’s Degree and initial certi cation in Mathematics and Secondary Education at the University of Kentucky. This past season, the Russell, Ohio native recorded six shutouts, and over her four-year career in net earned a program-record 17 shutouts. Markert was also recognized as the Ideal Bonaventure Woman. More about this prestigious award can be found on page 14.

As a team, the Bonnies received two National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) awards for their performance on the pitch and in the classroom. For the third straight year, the Bona women won the Silver Team Ethics Award, given to teams that accumulate no red cards and a maximum of ve yellow cards in a season. Additionally, the club nished the year with the second-highest team GPA of all the women’s sports at St. Bonaventure University, concluding the 2010-11 academic year with a 3.365 team GPA.

Entering the season, the men’s soccer team welcomed 16 newcomers – 14 of whom were freshmen – after losing ve starters to graduation, including All-Conference First Team striker Sam Maheu. Projected to nish 11th in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll, the Bonnies concluded the season tied for 4th en route to their second-straight postseason appearance for the rst time in program history.

Highlighted by wins over A-10 runner-up La Salle, and Little Three rivals Niagara and Canisius, the Brown and White rolled to a 10-8-1 overall record, including a commanding 6-1-1 mark at McGraw-Jennings Field.

The Bonnies earned the 4th seed at the A-10 Championship, and met 5th-seeded Saint Louis in a rematch of a regular-season outing in which St. Bonaventure claimed a 1-0 victory. However, this time it was the Billikens who came away victorious in a 2-1 triumph.

The 10 wins – tied for the second most of any A-10 club – signify the program’s second-consecutive year of double-digit victories for the rst time since a three-year run from 1997-99.

St. Bonaventure was rewarded for its work on the pitch as the Brown and White appeared in the Mid-Atlantic Region poll ve different weeks. SBU rst broke into the polls Oct. 12 as the No. 9 team in the region, and would

be ranked for the remainder of the season as it nished No. 3 in the nal poll on Nov. 9.

Head coach Mel Mahler will lose 10 seniors to graduation, but will return 14 freshmen, many of whom played vital

minutes over the course of the campaign. Of the team’s entire offensive output for the season, 99

percent (75 of 76 points) of it came from either freshmen or seniors.

Leading that freshman class was Emmett O’Connor, as the mid elder paced the Bonnies with ve goals and 17 points. Additionally, his seven

assists led the entire A-10, and he nished second in the league in game-winning goals with four. O’Connor reaped the bene ts of his performance

when he was named to the A-10 All-Rookie Team.

Fellow mid elder Brad Vanino joined O’Connor on the All-Rookie Team. The Sinking Spring, Pa. native nished the season second on the Bona roster in assists with ve, a total which ranked fth in the conference.

As for the seniors, Kevin Okapal garnered honors as one of the top student-athletes in the region. The biology major was named to the A-10 Academic All-Conference Team, ESPN Academic All-District First Team and NSCAA Second Team Scholar All-East Region. Additionally, David DiNardo, a defender from Ottawa, Ontario, earned a place on the A-10 All-Conference First Team, and NSCAA All Mid-Atlantic First Team, as he consistently locked down the opposition’s best attacking option.

Page 7: St. Bonaventure Athletics 2010-11 Annual Report

Under the guidance of rst-year head coach Bob MacFarlane, both the men’s and women’s cross country teams made signi cant strides during the 2010 campaign.

Senior Jimmy Burton paced the men’s team in the nal ve races of the year, including a time of 27:03 in the Atlantic 10 Championships. In each of the nal ve 8K races of the season, Burton – a Buffalo, N.Y. native – nished rst for the Bonnies, and in the regular-season nale at Albany, he recorded a personal-best time of 26:44.7.

On the women’s side, senior Tiffany Barkley nished her collegiate career with four team-leading performances of the squad’s six races. A bright spot for the future shown through at the A-10 Championships when freshman Christy Sirni led the way for the Bonnies, nishing the 5K race in a time of 21:41.

The Brown and White also exempli ed the meaning of student-athlete in the most complete manner. In the classroom, the women’s team nished with a cumulative GPA for the entire year of 3.369 – the highest GPA of any team at St. Bonaventure.

On the men’s side, the Bonnies nished with a cumulative GPA of 3.204 for the spring semester – the highest male team GPA of any sport for the spring semester. On the year, the men’s squad nished with the second-highest GPA of any male team, tallying a cumulative GPA of 3.195.

With four women and seven men returning next season, MacFarlane is optimistic about next year’s squad. MacFarlane has also brought in a large recruiting class as he continues to build the foundation of his program.

The head coach has signed 14 runners to National Letters of Intent for the 2011 campaign, seven each on the men’s and women’s sides.

“They are true student-athletes committed to being successful academically and athletically,” Macfarlane said of his recruiting class. “They are all excited about coming to Bonaventure, working hard and helping us build our program.”

The women’s swimming and diving team nished the 2010-11 season as one of the most improved teams in the nation.

After being predicted to conclude the season tied for 5th in preseason Atlantic 10 voting, the team wrapped up the A-10 Championships tied for 4th with La Salle, a two-spot increase from last year’s 6th-place showing.

The Bona improvement wouldn’t go unnoticed nationally. Following the season’s nal week, CollegeSwimming.com ranked the Bonnies No. 9 in the nation in its Improvement Ranking.

CollegeSwimming.com uses a program called Avidasports Performance Ranking to statistically establish which teams in the country increase their performance the most during a week, in comparison with the entire year. St. Bonaventure had an improvement rating of 103.5 percent, ranking as the lone A-10 team in the top 10, and just 0.7 percent shy of being the nation’s most improved team during the last week of A-10’s.

The overall team improvement wouldn’t possible without great individual performances. Freshmen Paige Gutowski and Jeanette Dietrich brought a tremendous amount of talent to the pool, helping lay the foundation for years to come.

Gutowski showed her ability to be a breaststroke powerhouse. At A-10’s she picked up the bronze medal in both the 100- and 200-yard events. Throughout the regular season she earned a combined 12 rst-place nishes in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events, including dominating performances against Pittsburgh, Binghamton and Niagara. For her efforts against the Bearcats, she picked up A-10 Rookie of the Week honors for the period ending Jan. 24.

While Gutowski excelled at the breaststroke, Dietrich – a native German – displayed her potential to be a force in the sprint events.

At A-10’s she placed sixth in the 100-yard freestyle and seventh in the 200-yard freestyle. In her collegiate debut at the Western New York Invitational, Dietrich nished in second place in both the 50- and 200-yard freestyles. Later in the regular season, in three events against La Salle and Duquesne, she earned rst in the 200-yard freestyle and second in both the 100- and 50-yard freestyles.

The Brown and White will return eight team members, including Gutowski and Dietrich, next season as it looks to improve even more from this past season.

The men’s swimming and diving team nished the 2010-11 season with a multitude of both team and individual accolades.

For the fth consecutive year, St. Bonaventure earned the silver medal at the Atlantic 10 Championships, nishing second to now ve-time defending champion Massachusetts.

Despite the second-place showing at A-10’s, the Bonnies nished the season ranked No. 23 in the nation in the CollegeSwimming.com/College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Mid-Major Division I poll. Bonaventure was ranked throughout much of the campaign. After initially checking in at No. 18 in the poll’s rst edition in November, the team slipped just one spot to No. 19 in nation in December before its nal ranking in February.

Individually, sophomore diver Mike Murphy improved on his stellar rookie campaign with a historic second year. Murphy scored a 340.28 in the 3-meter competition against Penn State in late January, setting a program record for the 3-meter dive. Murphy also took rst place in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives against Canisius, scoring a 282.90 and 294.60, respectively. That 294.60 3-meter score broke Canisius’s pool record in the 3-meter event.

The Sayville, N.Y. native then saved his best 1-meter performance of the season for when it mattered most as he won gold at A-10’s with a score of 300.60. The A-10 Academic All-Conference Team member just missed medaling in the 3-meter A-10 competition

when he nished fth with a score of 282.80.

Murphy wasn’t the lone Bonnie succeeding on the springboard, as freshman Dominic Butts-Ealy made his presence known in his rookie campaign with the Brown and White. Both Butts-Ealy and Murphy quali ed and competed at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships in March – the diving equivalent of the opening round of the men’s basketball NCAA Tournament. Murphy nished in 27th place in the 1-meter dive, and 21st in the 3-meter dive. Butts-Ealy nished in 43rd place in the 1-meter, and 31st in the 3-meter event.

Junior Peter Koenig joined Murphy on the Academic All-Conference Team. At A-10’s, he won the silver medal in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 50.09, improving dramatically from his 14th-place nish a year ago. He also improved signi cantly on his 14th-place nish from last year’s 200-yard backstroke, placing sixth this year with a time of 1:51.07.

Also at A-10’s, senior Kevin Murphy won the gold medal in the 200-yard breaststroke, clocking a time of 2:02.93 and improving upon his sixth-place showing from the year before. Fellow senior Dawid Kundzik also came up big for the Bonnies at the championships by earning gold in the 100-yard butter y, touching in at 49.49, and anchoring the gold-medal-winning 200-yard freestyle relay team.

St. Bonaventure will return 19 swimmers and divers next season as it looks to de-throne UMass.

For the second straight year, the men’s tennis team nished in 6th place at the Atlantic 10 Championship, while the women checked in with a 13th-place nish. For the men, the tournament presented more than its fair share of unique challenges – many of which had nothing to do with the players on the other side of the net.

Because of rain in the Saint Louis area during opening-round action, the team was forced to play two A-10 Championship matches in two different states on the same day. Originally set to face Fordham at 8 a.m. in downtown Saint Louis on Friday, April 15, the match was postponed until 12:15 p.m. When it nally did start, it began across the Mississippi River on indoor courts in Belleville, Ill. – roughly 30 minutes away.

The Bonnies won that match, 4-0, and then packed up to make a 40-minute journey west to Sappington, Mo. where they would meet Duquesne at 7 p.m. for the right to go to the semi nals. Unfortunately for the Brown and White, it dropped that match, 4-1, and was sent to the consolation bracket. Once there, St. Bonaventure defeated Saint Joseph’s, 4-0, before falling to Charlotte in the fth-place match, 4-0.

That loss brought to an end the careers of one the best senior classes head coach Mike Bates has assembled at Bonaventure during his 16-year career as Chris Post, Enric Larregola and Mikhail Sudakov all received postseason honors.

Post was named to the All-Conference First Team, while Larregola and Sudakov were named to the Second Team, marking the fourth consecutive season Bates has landed at least three players on A-10 All-Conference teams. One year removed from being named the

A-10 Men’s Tennis Student-Athlete of the Year, Larregola also earned a spot on the Academic All-Conference Team.

It was the third straight year Post has been named to the First Team, as he played out of the No. 1 spot all season and nished with 18 combined singles and doubles wins.

On the women’s side, the club closed the regular season by winning three of its nal four matches before nishing 13th at the A-10 Championship.

In the opening round of the tournament, the 12th-seeded Bonnies fell to Xavier, 4-0, and then in the consolation bracket dropped a match to Rhode Island, 4-1.

The URI match was the nal collegiate action for senior Maria Barousse, and she ended her career in style with a 6-0, 6-1 win to give the Bonnies their lone victory of the championship.

Junior Manuela Marin-Salcedo led the club with 16 combined singles and doubles wins, playing the majority of the year out of the No. 1 position against the opposition’s best player.

In the classroom, the women’s team nished with the fourth-best team GPA of every club at Bonaventure, concluding the 2010-11 academic year with a combined team GPA of 3.349.

Picked to nish 8th in the Atlantic 10 preseason polls, the lacrosse team nished the 2011 campaign in 6th place, overcoming a dif cult schedule and even harder scheduling con icts.

Because of poor weather throughout the spring, the team did not play a single home game at McGraw-Jennings Field, having to relocate all seven of its originally scheduled home contests. Five of the seven were played at Alfred University, while the other two were held at Canisius College.

Despite all of that, the Bonnies still entered their nal conference game against Duquesne with a chance to qualify for the A-10 Championship. Senior mid elder Christine Hanley was a key factor in that, as the Syracuse, N.Y. product capped a stellar four-year career in the Brown and White.

Hanley graduated as the Bonnies’ all-time leading goal scorer (154) and ranks second in career points (195) after posting a team-high 38 goals to go with 10 assists this year. For her efforts, the 2008 A-10 Rookie of the Year was named to the A-10 First Team for the third consecutive season.

Hanley was just one of a quintet of Bona laxers who received A-10 postseason honors. Senior defender Jill Remick joined Hanley on the A-10 First Team, and was also a member of the Academic All-Conference Team. She was second in the A-10 in both caused turnovers (1.92) and ground balls (2.75) per game, nishing with 27 caused turnovers and 39 ground balls.

Fellow senior defender Catie Greene was also named to the Academic All-Conference Team. Greene, a two-time Academic All-Conference pick, graduated in May with a perfect 4.0 GPA in psychology. She nished the season with 29 ground balls, 19 draw controls and 14 caused turnovers while starting all 15 games.

Freshman Cara Callahan made the A-10 Second Team and the All-Rookie Team after nishing the year with 44 points on 38 goals and six assists. The 44 points ranked third on the Bona roster, and her 38 goals were tied for tops on the club with Hanley. Against George Washington, the Painted Post, N.Y. native scored seven goals, just one shy of the program record for a single game.

Fellow rst year Karly Kocis also earned a spot on the All-Rookie Team after proving herself as one of the best young goaltenders in the league. Kocis started all but one game between the pipes, and nished rst in the A-10 with 8.83 saves per contest. She made a career- and season-high 16 saves in goal against Massachusetts, and 128 overall in over 700 minutes of work in the cage.

A 14th Leo Keenan Invitational title and an 8th-place nish at the Atlantic 10 Championship highlighted the 2010-11 golf season under the guidance of rst-year head coach Brett Mucheck.

Sophomore Brian McKenna shot a nal-round 67 and served as the catalyst for a nal-round push by the Bonnies as they claimed the 22nd annual Keenan invite at Bartlett Country Club in Olean in September. After shooting an opening-round, two-over 72, McKenna responded with the best nal round in the tournament’s history by a medalist, and third-best round in invitational annals.

McKenna was rewarded for his effort by being named the A-10 Performer of the Week, his rst of two-straight honors by the conference. The Rochester, N.Y. native repeated the feat the following week after nishing in a tie for 11th place with a ve-over showing at the Cornell Invitational.

The Keenan victory came after the Bonnies opened the season with consecutive last-place nishes, and the roller-coaster season continued as the club nished in the top-10 in six of its 10 tournaments throughout the fall and spring seasons.

St. Bonaventure played a dif cult spring schedule, as three of its four tournaments were held south of the Mason-Dixon Line, consequently resulting in the team facing some of the best Division I college golf teams in the country.

Despite the tough docket, the Bonnies still managed two top-10 showings in three of those tournaments as it prepared for the A-10 Championship.

This year’s A-10 Championship was held at the Mission Inn Resort at Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. After nishing the opening 18 holes

of the three-round tournament in 10th place out of 11 teams, the Brown and White rebounded the next two days to claw itself back into the mix.

The Bona second round was collectively 23 shots better than its rst round, and the club moved up to 9th place as a result of the fourth-best second round of any team in the eld. On Sunday’s nal round, Bonaventure moved up once again, concluding the tournament in 8th place, just three shots behind 7th-place Fordham.

The nish was nearly exactly where the Bonnies were tabbed to conclude the year in preseason voting as they were picked to wrap up the campaign tied for 7th with George Washington by A-10 coaches.

Following the season, Mucheck resigned his position. In early June, John Powers was named as his replacement. The four-year golf letterwinner at Bowling Green inherits ve returners as the Bonnies prepare for the 2011-12 season.

Similar to the lacrosse team, weather wreaked havoc on the softball team’s 2011 season as it played just six home games all year. Despite the issues, the club still entered the nal Atlantic 10 Conference weekend with a chance to qualify for the postseason tournament.

The Bonnies opened the season with a trip to Hawai’i where they spent several days before playing four games in two days after their opening-day game against the No. 10-ranked University of Hawai’i was rained out. The club’s early season travel continued just three days after returning from Hawai’i as it departed to Tennessee where the Brown and White played ve games in three days against four different schools on East Tennessee State’s campus.

And then Mother Nature impeded. The team’s rst three A-10 home series – against Fordham, La Salle and Dayton – were all relocated. The Bonnies hosted Fordham and La Salle on Fordham’s home eld in the Bronx, and then hosted Dayton at Kent State University in Ohio. St. Bonaventure was unable to play a home game until April 22 when it split a doubleheader with Charlotte. The team played the last six games of its season – three doubleheaders – at McGraw-Jennings Field.

Despite playing just 18 percent of their games at home, the Bonnies still exceeded preseason poll expectations where they were picked to nish 9th in the A-10.

Leading the offensive attack for the Bonnies was A-10 First Team pick Maureen Wells. The senior rst baseman hit for a career-high .333 average with 26 RBI and six home runs in her nal season, ranking sixth and 10th, respectively, in school single-season history in the latter two categories. She nished her time in the Brown and White with 62 hits, 11 doubles, seven home runs, 30 runs scored and 40 RBI.

Junior catcher Brooke Frey was named to the A-10 Second Team after leading the Bona roster in batting average (.347), hits (33), doubles (10), runs (22), walks (19) and stolen bases (four). The New Paltz, N.Y. native is tied for 10th in St. Bonaventure history with 19 doubles, and also ranks ninth in RBI (57) and fth in home runs (15) after just three seasons.

Freshman shortstop Ashley Snider was named to the A-10 All-Rookie Team. Snider, the third St. Bonaventure player in the last four years named to the All-Rookie Team, blasted a club-best nine home runs and ranked second on the squad with 22 RBI in her rst collegiate season. She tallied 32 runs scored, eight doubles and one triple to go with a team-best .663 slugging percentage.

Rounding out the Bona postseason accolades was senior third baseman Kara Morenus who was named to both the A-10 All-Academic Team and the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team. Morenus, who holds a 3.92 grade point average in psychology, started 30 games and graduated among the program’s all-time leaders in doubles (23, 4th), home runs (eight, 6th) and hits (96, 10th). The Horseheads, N.Y. product posted a career-high batting average of .281 in her nal year with two homers and seven RBI.

A year after nishing last in the Atlantic 10, the baseball program made signi cant strides in the 2011 campaign, nishing in a tie for the 5th spot in the conference ledger. Predicted in preseason voting to conclude the 2011 season in 12th place, the seven-position differential represented the biggest change of any A-10 team from predicted to actual nish.

The Bonnies went 13-11 in A-10 play, tying with both Richmond and La Salle; however, the Brown and White missed the six-team A-10 tournament by virtue of head-to-head series losses to both the Spiders and Explorers.

Despite missing the postseason, the Bonnies concluded the season with a .500 record, one year after nishing 14 games below that mark. Leading the way offensively for the Bonnies was senior Brad Steinbach who hit .331, followed closely by Billy Urban (.327), Jason Radwan (.324), Austin Ingraham (.323) and Jamie Wallschlaeger (.323).

Sophomore Radwan’s average was the best amongst all A-10 second basemen, good enough to land him on the All-Conference Second Team. The Angola, N.Y. native led the Bonnies with ve home runs – four in A-10 action – and total bases with 84.

Joining Radwan with postseason honors was Urban, who was one of 11 players named to the All-Academic Team. The Cleveland, Ohio product ranked in the top-10 in the league with a .359 batting average in A-10 action, and his 26 RBI in conference play were second-most in the league.

Steinbach capped his four-year career in the Brown and White ranking inside the top-10 career batting records in ve different categories. The St. Marys, Pa. native ranks 8th in hits (175), tied for 6th in hit by pitches (22), 6th in stolen bases (44), 5th in at bats (604) and 2nd in triples (10).

On the mound, junior Jordan Crane had a breakout season. After beginning the season as a reliever, the right hander made his way into the starting rotation and made eight starts on the year, nishing the campaign with a staff-low 2.76 ERA. That ERA ranked as the seventh-best in the entire A-10, and ninth-best in a single season in Bonaventure baseball history. He went at least eight innings in four of his last ve starts, and perhaps most impressively threw the entire season with a torn left ACL.

Already the winningest coach in program history, Larry Sudbrook ran his career victory tally to 569 this past year, giving himself a chance at eclipsing the 600-win mark next season. The 26-year coach returns his entire starting rotation, and six of nine position starters for next season as the Bonnies look to return to postseason play.

A-10 RECORD: 13-11 (T-5TH)

13
